In Conversation with Carolyn Rogers (Trainee Patent Attorney, Reddie & Grose)

In this video Carolyn describes how she came to connect her scientific research with a career as a patent attorney. As she points out the initial connections made can be vary a great deal. Perhaps for some of those reviewing the video conversation this will be their first step. As a PhD Carolyn points out that “its OK to realise the limitations of an academic career as a researcher and seek alternatives…it’s for the “rest of your life” She then goes on to explain how to build a credible profile, reassuringly pointing out that most firms are keen to see a broad interest in science and some relevant transferable skills. Identify what these might be.
Other resources that are especially valuable, and which Carolyn mentions, include the IP Careers website www.ipcareers.co.uk. It lists a comprehensive overview of the profession and the different roles involved including employer profiles, it explains the areas of specialism and describes the salary and benefits packages.
