About as clear and concise as you can get; he speaks in a very straightforward manner, which, only 30 years ago, would have made him a very bland and unexceptional MP, as so many spoke the same way then......but cometh the moment cometh the man, and he IS a man of the people, not in spite of his background, but more precisely BECAUSE of his background!

Mr Rees Mogg is trusted because he is HONEST: and so few of the Westminster Class are! And why the objections along the lines of, "He's never held high Office". Those who HAVE held high Office are not doing too well with all that experience: let's try a clean slate!

It looks quite an improvement over the tiny red planes of the Queen's Flight, I remember at RAF Benson in the 1960s. It's a bit 'presidential' (a la 'Air Force One'); but, then, our Queen is our Head of State; even for a republican like me.

But I believe that Jacob Rees- Mogg is an honourable man and his ideals show through his answers I think he would make a great Prime minister after Boris Johnson who as much as I like him, has not handled the Covid19 crisis particularly well, but I also believe that Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party would have made a pigs breakfast of it.

tamsinthai Well done for supporting Brexit as an expat, that's very noble of you. Of course the main reason I agree with Rees-Mogg is because of his stance on Brexit, because it's an all pervasive issue that will impact upon the UK in many different ways. However, I agree with him on reducing corporation tax, increasing the income tax allowance threshold, reducing foreign aid, his advocation of small government, and his general disdain of 'political correctness'. Also, I agree with a lot of his personal views on morality, but no doubt I'll only get put down for being an out of touch traditionalist if I share any of those views on here! Anyway, hope that answers your question.

I don't agree with some of his views but I like the man because he's quite consistent with his positions. I can respect that far more than a politician who changes their mind depending on what is popular at the time and I think an increasing number of British people are feeling the same way. This is why we saw the rise of Farage and the current popularity of Boris Johnson.

The quality of someones views is a little subjective and people on each side will consider their to be superior, but I never made a claim about the quality of his views, I merely pointed out that someone being consistent is something I can respect. It also means the person can be easier to deal with and predict, which is useful when you are voting for them.

I've never understood the idea of conservative and liberal labels when most people are a mixture of views, so when you say the conservative approach I'm unsure as to what you mean. For example I believe in long prison sentences for serious offenders, but I also believe we need a better approach to rehabilitation. One of these views is traditionally left leaning and the other is right, to me it's about pragmatism and the politics are an afterthought.

(unlike those regressive liberals who want to just bypass the debate and go right to the passing of Regulations and law without the debate ever happening or the debate being shut down via disruptive protest jerring or in antfifas case directly interrupting a open debate, in times like this a more civil approach is needed not more social justice warriors using PC arguments)

*ignores the anarchist* *ignores the commy* It's an obvious issue. If you're highly capable, as a leader should be... then you're unlikely to end up poor in the first place. At most someone can be born poor, but most of those quickly abandon the poor life and can't speak for the poor anymore. Seems that often the best advocates are those rare rich people who have an affinity for the poor. Trump (like him or hate him) has that. Roman populists like the Gracchi, Marius and Caesar had that. And the worst are the ones who claim to speak for the poor, but who have no affinity for them. Notably, bourgeouis marxists. It's easy to see the appeal, but its record is that everyone becomes dirt poor after the poorest 10% have been massacred, while somehow the party becomes filthy rich.

Meet Jacob Rees Mogg His Company Made £103 million but paid no Cooperation tax in the last 5 years His parent company is based on the Cayman Islands even though they operate in GB No contribution to the NHS, Police, Schools , Welfare, Defence. This is why he wanted out before the EU forced him to pay tax on new legislation they introduced. Did you really think he cares about the people of the UK? Despite being a Brexiter, In March 18 moved his business to Dublin via Somerset Capital. BTW he managed to scrounge £6.7Million in grants to refurbish his 300 bed ancestral home . An extremely principled man.

And these can be contradictory, yes I want economic conservatism (open borders to more free competition as JRM stated) -> in time can mean migrant workers, which social conservatists think liberal thing. Other things like not taking debt is bot social and economic conservatism. And there are many many other facets you can think of this. Of course ideologies love these kind of ambiguous terms coz it can be anything you want suited to contemporary context.

One simply installs 1 elevator which goes 1/2 way up. The people disembark to take another which goes to the remaining floors. A great deal more convenient than having to climb to the top.

How can you have 'maternity' or 'paternity' pay for MPs? This would have two consequences: either no representation IN PARLIAMENT, whilst the politician was absent, or the replacement of the missing MP by someone not ELECTED to fulfil that role! The role of an MP is unique: and they need to accept that 'uniqueness' when they stand for Parliament.

Kind of the reverse, I suspect. Whether or not you pay, they'll take that time off. The pay is to make sure their staff can do its job so that they'll remain up-to-date. Imo there might be a reasonable compromise now: allow parlementarians in certain situations to work from home. We have the tech to do that. But it's a reasonable statement that you shouldn't run for MP if you plan on getting pregnant... it's a medical condition, and if you know you're gonna be sick for half a year or more, would you run for office? I don't think that's responsible.

I really do not like the format of posing two (unrelated) questions at a time to the guest speaker. It puts him under unnecessary pressure. It does not allow him, or the audience, to give their full attention to each question in turn. However, if you do not agree with me on this, then perhaps you should go further, and adopt the format used on many news programs, by which I mean: text headings at the top of the screen, “crawler” text along the bottom, and a video playing in the background. All these innovations seem designed to make peaceful concentration difficult, if not impossible.

I'd love to see a 3 team debate with mogg and shapiro or Murray on the right. Peterson and haidt in the center and pinker and dawkins on the left. The question would be on the nature of humanity, or enlightenment values and western civilization. The only problem is that they would probably all agree to a large extent.

He still has his sights set on getting the top job after Boris. He's just keeping a very low profile at the moment so as not to be associated with all the current incompetence and sleeze. For all he cares the nation can go hang until the time is ripe to make his move.

@@mimikurtz4061 I think that is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. Firstly I don't believe he wants the job. He is an investment banker rather than a career politician. Secondly he has not held a ministerial department post (eg Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary, Chancellor) which pretty much rules him out for PM and again I don't believe he wants a government department role let alone the PM role. And thirdly he is a devout Roman Catholic which means his views on gay marriage and abortion are not exactly mainstream views. Ironically many, including myself, think this rather qualifies him for the role. A man who has principles on which he will not compromise without being "preachy" whilst accepting the will of the majority will do for me. I disagree with pretty much everything the Catholic church stands for but I admire JRM's principles.

@@Kaiserbill99 If he is an investment banker rather than a career politician, why did he take the post of Leader of the House? Why is he an MP at all? He's climbing the ladder like the worst of them.

@@mimikurtz4061 There have always been MPs, particularly on the Tory side, who have other non political interests. Rather than asking why he took the post of Leader of the House you might ask the question of why JRM was not offered a ministerial position. Without a ministerial position it would be incredibly difficult to become PM. The Leader of the House tends to be held by longstanding backbenchers and politicians on the downward curve of their careers.
