The 2020 version being set in a drab urban car park, in a car too big for the parking space really hit the realism on the head

On long journeys I take a gas stove to boil water, then just use an Aeropress and hand grinder that I'd have with me anyway for use in hotels. Not so much in-car as next to car, but i've done it many many times! Fun video, and really nicely put together!

I do the same, Aeropress, hario hand grinder and some type of heater (gas/electric12v,120v) depending on where and when.. I also use the hand grinder in hotel rooms and campgrounds because it is much quieter than the electric. This year I got a Khaw-Fee Portable French Press Hand Pump Coffee Maker as they call it. It is basically just a small single cup filter basket with a plunger. It works really well though, not as good as the aero press I have been using for years but pretty darn good if your time and temps are in the ballpark. It is very small and very convenient for a single cup. I have been meaning to tear a paper filter and shove it in the the basket to see if it works as well, I suspect it wont though, would be even more convenient if it did..

I am old school, I do a camp fire on the passenger seat and brew my coffee on a mokka pot. By the way, I only use oak wood.... Organic.... And sustainable.

I just recently got into tea, and I just bought a .5L silicone collapsible 100 watt, portable kettle on Amazon. Very generic. Not even a brand on it, but it's super small. i bought one of those travel gawain's to make tea in as well. Been drinking Green Tea for a week and went a couple days without it and had a real craving for it. So I think I'll need travel tea for the rest of my life...lol

Im a overnight truck driver and I used a "Roadpro" coffee maker for about 2 years. Worked well. Brewed about 8-10 oz (220g.-280g)I liked it. brew time was around 10-15 min. I did move over to the insulated mug and brought coffee from home simply more convenient. But wish there was a better in car coffee maker maybe even a compact 12v Kcup brewer for convenience.

My dad has a kettle almost exactly like the one you pulled out in your 1979 kit, not sure what he does with it but he probably does instant/coffee in a teabag/tea. I don’t want to inquire further. But as far as effectiveness is concerned, you’ll find that it would boil a lot quicker if the engine is running. As my dad spends a lot of time on the road I imagine that’s convenient for him. On another note, when I was in the Middle East, our tour bus driver had a camping stove and kettle/coffee set which he would pull out every time we stopped and make tea or coffee regardless of how hot it was. I kind of think he had the right idea for car coffee.

@@mercury6765 Yeah, funnily I don't like it that much, compared to other Astons it kinda has muscle car vibe and a V8 too. My 70's British car would be an E-type. We used to have a 94 Sovereign with that same engine, the 4 L straight six. Purred like a happy kitty and never had any problems. Unfortunately a speeding mini van totalled it.

The excitement when you realise both those cars were bought with Patreon money and will be given away to supporters! :D

Man o man... bought that exact coffee maker... in that exact box... back in the early 80s, as an accessory for my 69 VW bus. Made crap coffee but was great at reheating chicken noodle soup. :)

A whole new level of class for the Hoffmann. It's like a cross between a Bond film, Gillette advert and a Remington advert. A combination no one would have thought would exist or work quite so well. Bravo.

Oh my! My mother had I believe that exact same kettle for in-car tea brewing. We'd set the water to boil, drive another 10 minutes, and by then it would be boiling merrily and tea could be made at the next stop. Very dangerous if it had spilled, thankfully it didn't.

I randomly picked up a weird, retro looking light blue and red thermos from Ikea because it was $6 or something, and it actually works about as well as my Thermos briefcase bottle... but is too fat for a cupholder. Miir makes a good travel mug that keeps coffee hot an annoyingly long time, so I bring a worse one I can drink from because otherwise I'm burning the lining of my mouth off until 4-5 hours into a drive.

Aeropress and jet boil on the trunk or as you brits say “on the boot” is the fast way to make coffee anywhere with your car. I’ll admit definitely a bit difficult while driving.

I looked it up. And the Monoprice at Target is the same weight as the Jet but $50 instead of $80 (or more for the Jetboil, elsewheres).

James is a genius and a natural infront of the camera. 2 things I adore came together here, cars and coffee! This was great! Thanks for making my day!

I work field service and basically bring my whole setup from home plus a little Campingaz camping stove: Mokka-pot, comandante, oatmilk, cup, a few options for beans, all in my coffee-basket. The confusion on some peoples faces when they drive past while I'm grinding is priceless.

For our anniversary, I surprised my wife by waking her up in the middle of night to drive to a lookout before daylight, so that we could watch the sunrise. I took along a power inverter and brewed coffee fresh while we watched the sunrise. Some would say that it would have been much easier to bring a thermos, but the sound, aroma and experience of the coffee brewing in the dim hints of light before a chilly August morning was in our minds, well worth it :D Love the video by the way! very fun changeup.

Those "in car" devices are often cut down versions designed for truckers. As a trucker, I've had a modest coffee or 300 (it was instant before I got into good coffee, don't judge) in the cab. The perfect way to fill half an hour when parked up waiting for something.

@@DanaBonn Semi trucks already have large batteries. You can just buy an inverter and you're good to go. Some of the fancier trucks will have a generator for auxiliary power, but you mostly see that in California where there are laws against letting your truck idle.

The editing on this one is absolutely phenomenal, James.

I had an in-car coffee maker in around 1989, and it looked almost identical to the one James tested from 1979. I used to drive to London, which took about an hour (on a good day) and it took that long to heat a small cup of water to a usable temperature.

I am a simple man. I see James in a moustache and i click like.

James, we do love you, and that mustache was great, although the idea of you shaving....you may have fashionably grey hair but you have the skin of a nine-year-old boy (and I say that in a sort of envious way)

My father had a Dodge GTX back in the 70s and we went all over the country drinking coffee off the car coffee maker! Awesome!

An Inverter powering my Barista Express has worked well on a boat. Not compact, but so convenient and consistent. I use it often enough to bolt it down permanently in my work boat. Thanks for always being interesting. I didn't ever think I would watch youtube for coffee videos!!

i put off watching this video way too long, but every time i saw the thumbnail i always thought "some funky shadow or something looks like a moustache on james face!"... the fact that it actually IS a fake moustache makes me very happy

I wish that when James came back up after rinsing his face from the shave that he came back up with another mustache.

Yeah, I liked the aesthetic of smooth voiceover- completely the opposite of the super loud compressed ad which u wanna switch off from 20 years being annoyed. I watched it all, and I always skip 10 until they're done

In car coffee may have come a long way but I'll never switch back to cartridge razors, switching to a double edge with gillette blades and actual shaving soap has made my shave so much closer with none of the irritation of scraping 5+ blades across my face over and over. Minor life changer.

This was the most elaborate way to work in a razor ad read I've ever seen. And thank god for that.

My on-the-go coffee setup is the same whether I am in a car or carrying it in my backpack: MSR PocketRocket 2, Sea to Summit X-Kettle, Aeropress Go and Porlex Mini 2

I always feared one of those 12V water boilers would leave me and my old Merc with a blown fuse somewhere in the middle of nowhere, but seeing you did that in a 70’s Aston makes me less nervous about that 🤣 I always pictured you as a petrolhead, mr Hoffman, and I am glad I was not wrong. Happy motoring and thanks for all the great coffee tips that changed a part of my life for the better !

Holy shit man, your production values, subtle humour and creativity have always been outstanding, but this... *clap* * clap* *clap*

Harry’s ad is genius. They should pay you to make their adverts. Your question posed while sitting in the Tesla, “Is this just nonsense?” Answer: Resounding yes. Have your self driving car drop you off at Starbucks, or the airport, or a service station, or dinky donuts for that matter. Problem solved. Your channel is one of the best things to watch on any server, network, provider, etc. BBC (and the people at W1A) should just make a show around you where you get to exact your particular style of information sharing with the rest of us on basically anything that interests you (not necessarily coffee). I’d watch. And from the comments I’ve read on a multitude of your videos, I’m guessing a huge number of your audience would be watching too if it meant they’d get to spend a bit more time with James Hoffman. No way James! The quality of this vid is incredible! Hahah that intro was amazing.

I actually have the 70s model lying around, but growing up we'd use it more often with teabags than with coffee. Also it would be hung out the window using the provided hook with the window rolled down so the hook would insert into the same gap where the window glass resided.

I love it when KZreadrs leave their usual setting and take us to a world beyond that. It reminds me that they’re people, too, with humor and quirks and a life beyond what we typically see. Great video, Mr. Jim! Looking forward to the next ones, as always :)

I found your channel just recently and have been reveling in recent and back content. I'm American, so I don't know the proper British slang at the time, but I can honestly say you are completely groovy here, man! Right on!

Just over a decade ago, I used to have a little 3 door hatchback and put a coffee drip machine in the trunk. My morning commute was about 45min ( I worked outdoors) and it was lovely to turn up first thing in the morning with the coffee ready to go.

"It’s more offensive than my moustache" - James hits the truth every time. And I can’t believe you didn’t put the car in ‘Park’ - the handbrake on 1970s cars were terrible!

Boring excuse - I was running the car's engine in an effort to preserve the battery/not have it die and this particular car has a quirk where sometimes it won't start in park, but only in neutral.

@@jameshoffmann aston Martin's suffer from a fault of that generation where the sensor for the park fail due to poor wiring if you talk to aston Martin dealer or approved they should have the sensor or loom on shelf still as aston Martin have a heritage program to keep old astons going

I love it that you even make the ads entertaining to watch.

So a little math an average in car lighter port is 12v (Battery medium voltage) and supposed to be rated up to 10amps. That means it is only able to produce about 120w of power at lower charge. However when running most cars should have the battery at closer to 13.6-14 5v. (Alternator power being fed in.) So that is 10a x 13.6-14.5v = 136-145w of rated power draw on a near full charge battery or running car port. So at the 120w for a lower battery to raise 1 cup (8oz room temperature water (64f to 200f) it would take about 11 minutes. (Without counting any thermal losses or needing to heat up the coffee maker itself.) At the 136-145w of a full battery it will take between 9.5-9 minutes to heat that cup of water. If 100% efficient (which it is not going to be) it will take 21wh to heat that water in energy. The average car battery (Lead Acid) is supposed to be 1323wh. Divid that by the 21wh for brewing and we have about 64.50 cups of coffee we could brew with a full charge. (For 8oz water from 64f to 205f.) However taking the much more conservative cost of 35wh to brew that cup for losses in the electrical system and thermal losses to the maker while brewing and such... We more realistically could probably brew about 40 (8oz) cups on a full charge. The 170w maker he uses would theoretically take 7.5 minutes in a perfect world for 8oz. But again most car lighters are only 10 amp and that means only a max of 145w. So unless your car is a 12.5a or 15a that maker could blow your fuses or cuase damage to the wiring with prolonged use.

Pulling up in that Aston with that "Hey Baby" nod instantly took me right back to the 70's!!! Ahhhh the memories... I was 16 in 1979, and I think I got that very same creepy nod every day back then. "More offensive than my mustache" FANTASTIC!!! That mustache is right on the money too! I never did like that look, but it certainly was a sign of the times!! And may I say - BEST VIDEO YET and BEST COMMERCIAL EVER !!! Groovy. Just Groovy. Thank You James for making me laugh so early in the morning!!! My day is now complete. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

I was much younger than that in 1979, and yeah, I got that very same creepy nod every day too. It was a different time. (Thankfully.)

Nothing beats a good cocktail or homemade mead during the sunset, near an ocean breeze. Or possibly even going to work.
