Sure you'd be the best at imitating them!! Now I on the other hand, would be fantastic! Fantastic my foot!!! Remember I'm the kid who lived practically next to a zoo!! But I've spent YEARS researching them!! Who says I haven't either!! You know what? What? Lets settle this once and for all! Agreed!... How are we gonna do that?

    I love this. Not only is the animation visually very beautiful, but I love how lighthearted you kept the story without taking away from the severity of this "disability". As someone who has social anxiety I could relate to many of her struggles (especially the phone ringing!) and I think the crocodile was such a great representation and also showed that it is possible to calm your "crocodile" when you acknowledge and accept it, and you can be brave and live a good life.

    this is hella cute, because it makes sense. It portrays anxiety not as a mistake that you have to deal with but as what it is, a natural response, a defense system to prevent social shame and embarrassment that has run rampant. And like any crazy pet alligator (while it may take time) it can be tamed and lived with.

    I become socially anxious because I was an extrovert as a child. I just thought that nobody wanted to be friends with someone loud and annoying like me...so I closed up in my own little shell. Recently I started thinking "wait...this isn't right..." and realized that I had developed social anxiety. I can't hold eye contact because I'm afraid that people think I'm ugly, I don't have friends because I suspect people find talking to me annoying, I never want anyone to worry about me because I just feel so worthless...the moral of my story? *STAY YOURSELF. AND DON'T CHANGE FOR OTHERS.*

    You're not alone! I can relate to that so much... Now I really wish to become that cheerful child again, but she's long gone... I don't even remember how to make friends, and tense up even just thinking about developing deep relationships with someone else... But I believe there is SO much more than how you appear to others and that you're an amazing person. You're not worthless at all, someday we'll meet people who can accept (and even love) our weirdness and awesomeness XD

    Yep same here, sometimes I keep thinking: I should talk to people more, i should be more friendly. But you know what? like you said; just stay true to yourself, don't change to please others, just be yourself and true friends will come. Kind of reminds me of Lithium from Nirvana: "I'm so lonely, but that's okay, I shaved my head... and I'm not sad. And just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard... but I'm not sure."

  • @hailsatin666

    @hailsatin666

    Honestly, this represents anxiety, (which is sometimes referred to as shyness) to a T. The way she struggles through seemingly simple tasks answering the phone or saying hello to your neighbor because she's held back or prevented because of her crocodile aka her anxiety. Also the way it circles her while she's sitting at the cafe, because it's always on her mind. Then how she was frustrated and tried kicking it away ect, was so funny because I've tried handling my anxiety the same way, by just trying to push it out of my life. And the only way that has really helped me handle my anxiety is also perfectly represented by the main character accepting her anxiety/fears and not allowing them to hold her back anymore. Loved this short :') Also, this isn't solely directed at you haha sorry i just wanted to clear up how it represents shyness really well.. err at least it does to me being a person who has shyness haha

  • @oOPPHOo

    @oOPPHOo

    Amber Goddard Thanks for the input :) I still don't think it's specific enough to be shyness and shyness alone. I don't see a lot here that's exclusive to shyness as opposed to other weaknesses that can't be changed. Your weaknesses are a part of you and you're still a lovely person. No need to ruin yourself over it by trying to change what can't/needn't be changed. Not that it matters much. The abstract nature of it means it can be applied to shyness/anxiety as well as many other things no matter what the specific thoughts behind all this were I feel pretty sure its purpose is for people to reflect on and use to improve *their* lives and how it relates to *them*. Can you use it to accept your anxiety? Great! Your homosexuality? Great! Your depression? Great! Your fears? Great It's all great :)

    after seeing the comments relating the crocodile to anxiety, it makes a lot of sense. i think the reason why the crocodile was worried/looked sad when she went to talk to her neighbor was because it was trying to protect her from getting her feelings hurt. the anxiety preventing her from talking to him could be seen as a self protection mechanism, protecting her from the possibility of something going wrong, which is essentially what the crocodile was doing. like if you clam up in a situation, you are usually scared to talk because you're afraid of something going wrong and if you personify that fear, you get the crocodile. also the crocodile has my heart its so cute

    I'm very shy with people in person that I don't know, and it's hard to talk to the people that are not close to me, and it's hard to get by sometimes. I am shy because I was harshly outcast everywhere I went in my elementry years, even my friends turned against me because of this one girl who bullied me and ruined my childhood. Now I have friends, but I always have that dreading feeling someone might come along and turn all my friends against me again, and that would lead to being so scared of a friends betrayal, that I won't even be able to make friends. So I don't even talk to the people I don't know unless I have to, because I'm afraid that they will hurt me, or not like me. And wanting appreciation is why I worry over my hair, worked extra hard at talents like drawing, singing, instrument playing, and things like that. Also I'm trying to take up talents like being a KZreadr, so that I'll be appreciated in spite of my elementry years...

    If the croc was anxiety, then it does describe it accurately. You can never really get rid of it or force it away, no matter how hard you try and how extravagant the techniques are. It's just a matter of taming it and doing the best you can with a crocodile on a leash dragging behind you. That's my experience, anyway.

    I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder several years ago. Everything from answering the phone, to having coffee with friends, to leaving the house can be a living hell. It doesn't get better, but you learn to cope. This is exactly what it was like learning to cope, for me.

    I've been dealing with the same problem for as long as I can remember, it absolutely crippled my life when I was a teenager. Learned to cope with it and did socially amazing things that I never thought I could! but every now and then, when I find myself alone and isolated.. it creeps back in slowly. No worries though, years of training have provided me with a great arsenal to deal with it and bounce back :) Cheers!

    What's the worst that could happen? Don't worry, I have the same as you and many others. A lot of people are suffering from this problem and they don't like to lower their shields because they could get hurt. It's worth it. I joined a student union last year and I completely changed (although I'm not there yet, still have a lot to learn). There will be very good times and also bad times, but the most important is to have people around you who are of the same crop as you are and able to know and understand who and what you are. Some of them don't or can't, just leave them as they go. Best of luck!

    My first thought about this was that the alligator represented social anxiety. When she was in front of her clients, he appeared. When she tried to talk to the guy, the alligator was blocking her, much like how anxiety does the same. When she was in the square of tables outside of the cafe, he was there too. Thank you for reading, if you agree, please like and comment what you maybe thought that it was.

Parfois, il y a des moments quand on sent qu'on va mourir ou qu'on meurt et ça peut être très infernal parce qu'on sent que ça ne finira jamais. I love this and not just because of its brilliant art, animation, and moving story. The thing I love most about about this is the symbolism. The crocodile can be seen as any mental health struggle that inhibits daily life and interactions for those who have it. As a person with social anxiety, I strongly relate to the social anxiety crocodile, but I also watch this video when I’m depressed, seeing the blue crocodile as depression and seeing its antics as representative of how depression makes you apathetic, fatigued, and sad, keeping you from doing the things you want and usually enjoy. I watch this video when my own crocodiles bite at my heels or threaten to swallow me whole. It makes me feel calmer.

    This is so true. I'm 19 started to become shy or social anxiety when I was about 13 until now. I can say this animation relates me a lot. I'm awkward when meeting new people. Every time I was asked to do my presentation, I will stuck in the middle, saying a lot of "um," and "a," ruined my presentation. I tried to talk with stranger sometimes but then, it instantly became awkward. Even though I was like this, but I kinda like it because it was like making me somewhat a character, different from my other friends. But mostly this social anxiety is a real pain in the ass... =_=

    A conversation isn't supposed to be a program you run, it's something which develops by itself :) Just show something of yourself, what bothers you (not your worst problems but something you see or what you experienced at work, studies, spare time, etc). Sometimes people put too much pressure on themselves, you don't have to perform perfectly like society expects. Everybody is still themselves, some more confident than others but not necessarily more able. Keep that in mind, good luck!

    I love how they represented anxiety with a cute crocodile. I really relate the moments where the normal things like talking to a telephone or generally talking to new people is blocked by my anxiety. But anxiety is not all bad, it's our flight or fight response. Anxiety makes us be careful in everything we do. We can accept anxiety as a part of us and embrace it. But, it is unfortunate that there are people who has anxiety to a point where they cant cobtrol it and have anxiety attacks

    I really like this representation of shyness / social anxiety -- when people describe their insecurities and weak points, they usually use the term "demon". We don't know if demons even exist, and if they do, we have no idea how to truly conquer them... However, we know crocodiles exist, and though they're definitely scary, we know how to subdue them and keep them at bay. We know insecurities, weak points, disorders, and of the sort exist... just like crocodiles. It makes a better representation, in my opinion. Anyway, off the artistic side and from a casual viewer standpoint, I loved it; beautiful animation, and a cute story.

    People are saying its oversimplified or you cant just call your anxiety cute and then suddenly be over it. I just wanna say that it's not the fact that she acknowledged it as cute, it's the fact that she acknowledged it at all. My therapist told me that I'll probably never be cured of my anxiety, that it's not something you can grow out of, but that I can learn to cope and live with it, and once you have learned coping mechanisms that it's manageable and becomes much easier to manage the more you practice. That's what she's doing. Accepting she has a mental illness so she can learn how to cope with it, instead of just ignoring it, and trying to will it to go away. Because it won't. ignoring it and being mad about it won't get you anywhere. so actually it's a pretty good representation of how this shit works.

    The momment the crocodile prevented her from presenting normally in work and pick the phone I was like "Yeap it's social anxiety alright". This is the main concept that drives this animation onward and I'm preety sure the basis of it's creation. I wanna create an animation: ok what? *few ideas later* Maybe social anxiety? it's preety relatable and apealing to large audience* hmm now how am I gonna make anxiety look like in a way that is not immidietly recognised as that? That's preety much the workflow of this project according to my speculations. Well for anyone who wondered how to get from having nothing to this. It's mostly the idea, all the others come natural with a little research.

    Cute animation, but people in the comments seem to be confusing shyness and anxiety. Being shy is a normal part of life, and we all experience it. Anxiety is crippling, and it's not something one ever shows affection towards, like the woman in the animation does. Lets not confuse terms, and trivialize serious mental illnesses.
