Wolfgang Seifen is a great improviser. Germany has always had them and I am enjoying finding them on the internet. We should add Franz Josef Stoiber at Regensburg and the late Franz Lehrendorfer at Munich to any list. The French have always had a great tradition though with some exceptions I think French improvisation is going through an odd perhaps self-indulgent phase at present. Like all true improvisers, Prof Seifen has a huge, well-developed, and well-utilized bag of tricks, but what sets Seifen apart from your average competent organist, (besides technique obviously etc.) is that they are used in such musical, innovative, coherent, and disciplined ways so that the results are definitely worthy of concert performance. I regularly play Lehrendorfer improvs. in my car as I travel along. Now with Blue Tooth, I can add Seifen too! Thanks, Professor for wonderful music making.

One of the best musicians of our time, period. His understanding of melodic structure, harmonization and his ability to improvise big works with actually meaningful overall structure….just blows my mind.

there are a lot of organists who can play like him . I know someone from Utrecht, who got ill, has no prof title, is living as a Hermit/Solitary , you won't believe what he can. Has a organ at home. I have heard him playing in the past on a saturday at the Old Catholic Cathedral at 'kerken kijken utrecht" As a Guest player. ...i think it was around 2003 unbelievable.

@@musicisitall Hmm…Interesting…..names please? When you say there is ALOT of people that could play like him then I at least expect that you can give some real names as example. And since you claim there is alot of people, I also expect that you can come up with more than one name. I have played the pipeorgan since I was 8 years old (starting playing the keys when I was four), have worked with some truly excellent musicians during the years, but I have yet to hear anyone better than Wolfgang Seifen when it comes to improvising a baroque-style fugue on the spot.

@theclaverman look up organist like: Sietze de Vries, Evan Bogerd, Rien Donkersloot, Gerben Mourik and many more Dutch organists. I went to a concert of Wolfgang. It was ok and still amazing but when you look up all his KZread concerts it is almost always the same structure. He is good in this style but never very surprising.
