Improving your Hondas MPG with a Performance Air Filter

In this video I take the competition and go head to head in a fuel efficiency test to see if a performance air filter will improve your fuel economy.
The test is done in 2 rounds with 87 octane fuel from Costco.
88 miles each test and two clicks of the pump.

I have quite a few things in my life I’m juggling right now so to maintain a site at the moment might be a bit of a stretch but I am working on it. So thank you for the recommendation as it will now be something I will consider again to move forward with sooner than later.

    Tried the AEM for my Ridgeline and couldn’t get it to stop kicking on engine lights and throwing it into safety mode. I eventually gave up and contacted AEM, who just refunded me the full purchase (I had to provide proof of course) and wanted me to destroy it and send them pics to show such. Soooo kinda makes me distrust their products to be honest. They went right to the refund and trash it lol.

    I recently replaced my 2017 Ridgeline RTL-T with a new 2022 RTL. I had salvaged and installed the AEM #21-795C Cold Air Intake from my old 2017, which worked great for 5 hrs. I followed the AEM installation instructions just as before, disconnecting the battery’s negative ground and so on… Everything was fine for a couple of days vehicle ran as expected and then received an ECM code “Emissions System Problem” and “AWD System Problem”. Since the vehicle only had 1,200 miles and under warranty I took it to my Honda Dealer for diagnosis. The Honda technician found the following: CODES Confirmed by Honda Dealer Tech - Live Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) 1.) P0171 (Fuel System Bank1 Too Lean) and 2.) P0174 (Fuel System Bank2 Too Lean). The technician also checked the MAF Sensor, the fuel flow/pressure, the fuel Ethanol content and they all tested fine. The SOURCE of the codes were blamed on my installed 21-795C AEM Cold Air Induction which like I said worked fine for 5 years on my old 2017 Ridgeline RTL-T. Dealer Tech reinstalled the OEM air box and readings went back to normal, no codes. I contacted AEM Tech Support with the trouble codes issue and ALL they offered was “we have not tested our Cold Air Intakes for the 2022 Honda 3.5L V6 and we don’t know when we will do so“. Not much help from AEM… Now, I also had in my hoard a new K&N drop-in filter installed it and no codes. Bottom line, Honda must have changed some parameters in the 2022‘s ECM. If anyone with a 2022 Ridgeline is successful in using a Cold Air Intake, please share.

  • @YuriyMotso

    Agreed. The higher Airflow due to potentially less resistant filter would do just that. The ECU probably is not able to adjust enough to make up the difference to the new A/F ratio so we end up getting better fuel economy. This is great because it will probably work for most vehicles.

    Great job, I love your videos not much info on Ridgelines out there, but you keep giving us answers. But one thing I can't find, even with the dealer, is will the Ridgeline handle a fifth wheel, is this even possible? I know it would have to be light on the rear axels, the closes I've gotten to an answer said, that's what the plugged holes on the bed are for, with a, I think. Keep making those Ridgeline videos, thx.

  • @YuriyMotso

    @YuriyMotso

    3 жыл бұрын

    So to answer your question with the best knowledge I have is that its probably not possible. Reason being. the plugs are not for fifth wheel but to access bolts in the bed. I believe it was for either part of the bed or holding up the gas tank underneath. Cant remember now but I took the whole truck bed apart because my truck was wrecked in the rear of the auction. (Would have made for some amazing content!!!!! UGHHH! Missed opportunity) Another reason it probably can't be done is because you have the in bed trunk/storage that is below the bed frame that houses the spare tire. So not sure how you would be able to secure the 5th wheel to it without interfering with the in bed trunk or the spare tire. Its a tight squeeze down there. I am more along the lines that its probably doable but not without many sacrifices and would have to be some really light fifth wheel. Not sure those exist. typically they have a steel frame and those frames alone weigh close to 3000-5000 lbs for a light one. What would you need a fifth wheel for? That typically means its a serious haul.

    Take a WIX filter, does filter (micro) dust the same as a AEM filter and airflow is the same, but a WIX filter is way cheaper then a AEM filter and for that money you can buy a lot of fuel. But mine opinion is to take a filter what is filtering the best (micro) dust, so take a filter of the brand Hengst or Alco.

    Are you also running Cold Air Intake with these tests? I am curious about the cost of the filters and how long they last too, since a higher surface area may also clog up and need replacing at a different rate, thus causing an externalized cost.

  • @YuriyMotso

    @YuriyMotso

    3 жыл бұрын

    Since the OEM, AEM drop in filter and Takeda are closed systems these are "cold" air systems as they draw colder air from outside of the vehicle into the engine bay. The AEM Performance intake system is a cold air intake (CAI) but it does allow for heat soak from the engine to be recirculated into the engine at a higher rate than with the closed systems. -AEM states that you can go up to 100,000 miles before cleaning the filter however I would do it much sooner. This is a reusable filter so you will never need to buy another one again unless you damage it. -Takeda does not have any statements on how often you should perform cleaning on their website which is quite strange. This is a reusable filter and will never need to buy another one unless damaged. -OEM filter is to be checked at 10,000 mile intervals and changed anywhere between 15-30,000 miles. This is not a reusable filter and will need to be purchased roughly every year.

    The cone filter is for a different type of intake system. It’s not a plug and play. More surface area to clean out air but you are still limited to how much the tunnel ID is for the amount of air flow that can pass through. So no significant benefit.

    Thanks for asking. I specifically did two graphs. One with all and one without. Reason being is that the Car could possibly perform the worst on the first run because the ECU has to adjust for the new air flow which could affect fuel efficiency. It could happen immediately or after a few miles so just in case the first run happened to have a potential discrepancy I showed a graph without that test. I don’t think it’s enough to make the test false but someone watching might say something and complain so I decided to cover all the bases. Hope that explains

    You should do a mpg test where you set your cruise control at 45, 50, 55, etc all the way to 80. Drive for 10 miles on a nice flat road and chart speed vs mpg. You can reset you in dash average and your scangauge average and record their readings after 10 or so miles. Then average those 2. It may not be 100% accurate to real life but if you plot them out you can see the optimal speed for the best mpg. It'll really show you how driving faster than 70 kills your mileage.

    Yes they did and in most of my past tests and experiences they have performed better than the OEM filter.

    @@YuriyMotso So really no gas mileage with the AEM CAI over the AEM drop in filter.

    Sorry I ment to say that the AEM drop in usually performed slightly better over the AEM CAI. It’s marginally different compared to the two AEM products but perform much better than the stock OEM alternative. It comes down to do you want that extra noise while you drive with the AEM CAI. I personally do love it. Now to see the HP differences between the three is going to be very interesting. Since my last Dyno video was the AEM drop in VS AEM CAI I want to see all 4 of these on the Dyno same day and see how they stack up as I don't have a control to base my gains on.

    Makes little sense since your AEM Performance did worse in the MPG test in highway control. Also, your last dyno video showed that the AEM Performance CAI performed worse than the OEM and AEM drop in. It seems like the performance of the AEM Performance CAI is not trustworthy and that the drop in is the only one consistent

    I am working up a wrap up video. What you say about the dyno for performance the AEM performance filter seems to be inconsistent in producing higher power though it does. But for those looking for fuel efficiency both AEM filters are better than OEM in most of my tests on and off screen.

    so did you buy an adaptor or something... these filters are of your own choosing. MAF sensor relocate? no one wants to do these simple mods if you just remove them and throw a cel...
