How is hemiplegia diagnosed. I have a child that started crawling dragging one leg, then started holding fist in a ball, now doesn't use left arm and uses smos for pronation (all on the left side). We've seen neurologist and neurogeneticist (awaiting test for that) and all that shows is T2 hyperintensity in subcortical white matter (lesions). Because my child also has autism my concerns are being dismissed as autism. My question--what tests would show hemiplegia? Aren't their symptoms enough? She sees early intervetion PT & OT who also noticed one=sided preference...Thank you!

That certainly sounds like hemiplegia to me. Yes, it is a clinical diagnosis. Do you have any access to a pediatric physiatrist (doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation).

My son is 12 years old has left hemiplegia and his left side I have noticed is smaller. The left foot shorter 1cm. His left toes of his left foot and left hand are smaller than the right. His teeths on the left side ..his left nostril smaller. Does anyone have the same problem? Thank you.please I want to know if you have the same problem .he can walk eat dress alone hes very smart just his left side is weak...

It is common to have the hemiplegic side be smaller, but I have not seen a mouth or nostril being smaller. Using the arm for weight bearing activities, jumping on the leg can help this to some extent.

i’m 15 and got left hemiplega when i was a baby because the doctors cut my cord too early, but my parents took me to this place that gave me lots of exercises, my leg corrected, my eye and my tounge, but my arm not so much, i still have some use with mr left arm but can’t do things such as: move individual fingers, or turn my arm upside down. But one thing i wish would change is my wrist is just bent, you could say, it’s not straight and i really wish it would be, please help if you can!

  • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation

A bent wrist is really common in hemiparesis. Sometimes a splint can help. Also, Botox or Dysport injections can help. Check out the playlist on spasticity on this channel for some of those videos. Also, sometimes surgery can help.

I have had many patients play sports with hemiplegia. It depends on the degree of hemiplegia and on the understanding of the coaches. I would certainly try. If you are not able to, try other sports.

Have do so as much as he can with his left hand, particularly weight bearing on the arm. An occupational or physical therapist can help you know how to do this.

On the Utah Neuro Rehabilitation KZread channel there are other videos on stretching that might be helpful: Stretching leg with Rapunzel, Stretching arm. There may be others on the cerebral palsy playlist. I started this site for people to find things they can do at home. Often insurance does not cover enough therapy.
