Improving an Autoworld Thunderjet Ultra G slot car

Ойын-сауық

In this video I go over the basics to improve performance of the Autoworld thunderjet Ultra G slot car. The auto world cars are your entry level slot cars but with a few simple things you can make them run pretty good and have a ton of fun.

    I like to stay with stock cars. And I mean "stock". You can get more people and families into the hobby. As well as teaching how to tune-up the cars. Thanks for your help with this video. Keep up the good work. Thomas

    Time consuming but simple modification for not just the Autoworld cars but the older Johnny Lightning cars as well. Get K&B .063 brass tubing and very gently ream out the rear axle stays til the tube fits snugly. Cut the tubing flush with the chassis, a couple of drops of epoxy and you're good to go. Use a Aurora or aftermarket axle and Crown gear and the difference is like night and day, particularly with the older cars. Another place you can do this is with the pinion gear, use a Aurora Armature gear that is too sloppy to use on an Armature anymore with a cut off piece of Aurora axle. But don't try to do it on the chassis side, there's not enough meat to make it work.

    Along with your routine, if you tighten up that arm just enough so there’s no flopping about… it smooths right out. Of course you need the right tool to do the work correctly, it’s totally worth having. Brushes and arm will stay in good shape.

    Great track. Excellent video. Next time don't sand anything with the chassis under your work, it will capture all the debris. The rear end of the Autoworld cars have grease on them as well, that should be cleaned off before oiling.

    Thanks It definitely Helps ...Had racing set as a Kid .. probably Aurora... then in the 90's the wife bought me a Tyco Lambhorgini Championship 60 ft of track set ... I never assembled the whole set so in 2014 set up very little of the track ... now ten years later I retired a year ago .. so now I assembled to entire set up .I,m 66 yrs now LOL .. Found Pro Tinker Toys online Bryan and Ryan Father son .. so I ordered a couple AW thunder jets that what attracted me to your channel .... also have an AFX Chevelle coming I have heard auto World is. so. so ... I appreciate you insight on a little bit of improvement for these cars thanks Much

    Everyone one of these I've bought is toe heavy. I've also noticed difference in speed. I have one that is waaay faster than the others and it's hard to keep on the track lol. These cars are fun though! I think the criticism comes from their ability to stay on the track. Not everyone wants to be a "driver". These cars are beautiful. My cars also don't stick to the track near as well as yours out on the package for some reason.

    That circular ring you were trying to get rid of happens when the car powers up. Centrifugal force makes the gear want to fly off. Without the chassie strap it would. You cant stop that friction thats why theres usually a drop of oil on the top gear or in your case a light grease. Love the T-jet/ AFX CARS, I have about 140 cars and trucks and a NOS cases of T-Jet chassies from long Island. I have so much crap im just up in the air as far as selling it, i have no where to set it all up anymore.

    The thing with any slot car set is that the controllers are usually junk. The thing with the newer mega g+ cars is that they need higher whatts to run and a higher OHM controller than most 1:64 scale cars. The mega g+ cars are usually a bit faster than other brands of the same scale. Unfortunately, if you have a set that is set up for the mega g+ cars, you can only run those cars. If you want to run other cars that are not mega g+, you will need a variable current adapter and a different OHM controller. The AFX set is considered a starter set to keep the price down, and additional parts are sold separately. The turn border walls may look better in the Auto World set, but they do not stay that well in place when a car hits it. The AFX fence is a bit better as it works. The tracks themselves may look a little different, but only cosmetic as the tracks for both sets are molded from the same molds in China, and the Auto World track just has some exterior paint. Also both tracks will connect together. Auto World, in general, is better than AFX. The Auto World set, since it is packaged better and comes with the supports does cost a bit more than the AFX set. As a side by side comparison, the video was neat, but it is like comparing apples to oranges, as both sets are similar as they are both nascar style tracks in the 1:64 scale but both kits are different enough that yes the Auto World set is more complete but the AFX set is sold as a starter set as the supports, track clips, etc... are sold separately to keep the cost down.

    Not sure where this comment is coming from as this video is about an Autoworld slot car and has nothing to do with mega g+ cars or afx/auto world track. The track in this video is a mix of new style afx race masters and Autoworld track. You do have your facts backwards though. Autoworld sets are significantly cheaper then the afx race masters sets. This track was powered buy a afx wall pack with 120ohm controllers and we ran everything from tjets to mega g plus cars.

    I use brake clean you get in a spray can at the auto section of stores. Spray it into jar and you have the same thing as denatured alcohol. Same result, easier to get. I think your lap time improvement is due alot to the better tires. Wish you would have compared times with same tires.

  • @TheSlotSpot

    @TheSlotSpot

    Жыл бұрын

    The tires are definitely the biggest factor to the lap time but the other stuff provides a much smoother and enjoyable car. I guarantee not changing tires there would be no improvement other then maybe a little quieter car. As far as the brake clean I’m not sure how you think it’s easier to get. You can get denatured alcohol at almost any store in America from even dollar stores sell it. I don’t see the purpose of transferring from an aerosol can to a jar. I also live a half block away from a cvs so most of my supplies come from there. Whatever works for you though my man.

    It’s a mobile app that’s really easy to setup and works pretty well. The hardest part of finding a way to hold your device. It’s also very sensitive to shadows so you need a well lit room for it to work accurately.

    Denatured alcohol will not wash off grease. Grease is a hydrocarbon. White spirit or lighter fluid would be more appropriate. I don't own any HO cars. Why don't you true up tyres like 1/32 and 1/24 scale ?
