Swinging across your body: your body controls the swing path. So unless you line your body side way perfectly toward the target, it is hard to control (your body structure dictates the follow through). But if you swing directly toward the target as your body is relative line up in parallel to the kitchen line, you can control the shoulder and the big arm toward the target and the follow through is well in your control, not by the limitation of your body, as in the case of across the body.

As beginners, many people develop the "swing across body" bad habits because it is easy. You don't need to worry about the follow through. You just let your body swing across the body. You feel natural. But the result is UNPREDICTABLE. So as you get better, you want to use the shoulder and the big arm to control the swing direction. Now you might think that it will swing up. But that is because you can not control your muscles yet. Once you have a good control over your shoulder and big arm, you can control how well the dink goes.

Wouldn't that send the ball higher giving your opponent a put away? What's the reason for straight line swing?

To gain better control of your ball and no it wouldn't send it higher.

@@Jitesh108 You can still slice the ball while following through forward. The key to the slice is the angle of the racquet as it's making contact with the ball. Going across the body may impart some side spin but may also result in more unforced errors.

@@Jitesh108 Possibly. However, it's better to start with good technique, and after it's mastered, perhaps other techniques could be used to mis-direct.

To be honest, does paddle even need any coaching? It looks like you just hold the ‘racquet’ and swing. If you have decent hand eye coordination and such. I don’t think there is any real technique required. Or am I wrong
