IMPROVE YOUR DRIVES WITH SWINGARM ANGLE & ANTI-SQUAT - New World Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to get better drives out of turns with more swingarm angle, more anti-squat, and better choice of sprockets. Welcome to the New World of Superduke Setup - Part 2.
Learn how more swingarm angle can get you better anti-squat, which will help your motorcycle drive out of turns without squatting - which extends the forks and forces you wide. I talk about the different ways to get more swingarm angle; shock length, axle position, and Sportlinks from Superduked.com. But the surprising lesson here is that sprocket sizes can also have a big impact on anti-squat. So it is possible to increase your anti-squat without raising rear ride height!
This video talks you through all of the challenges of setting up a bike with a single sided swingarm.

All motorcycles, or vehicles with two wheels, which have similar suspension (telescopic forks, swingarm, and belt or chain drive), behave by the same rules of physics and can be affected by adjusting these points. Admittedly this information is well below the surface of the majority of riders or enthusiasts, but it's still there. _"Forget mysterious dark matter and the inexplicable accelerating expansion of the universe; the bicycle [by extension the motorcycle] represents a far more embarrassing hole in the accomplishments of physics."_ -Michael Brooks

@@exothermal.sprocket You make a valid point about that same rules of physics. I guess that's why I tried to watch this till the end, hoping to understand it so I can adapt or experiment even on my own bike, a Z900.

@@jerodoque Frankly I personally think that's a great platform for a sort of competent racing platform. Not sure if it needs dogbone links or adjustable triple trees to achieve the sort of behavior that would make it really good, but I guess that's what experimentation and trying things might reveal. Have you taken it on track?

@@exothermal.sprocket Haven't had the chance yet. I was supposed to join a trackday last weekend, but then life happened and I had to cancel. Just the usual weekend mountain runs. I guess I really need more seat time before I do anything else again. When I tuned my suspension few months ago, I kinda unknowingly increased the rear ride height by setting the correct preload. And I really wondered why the bike suddenly felt much better to ride on with that minor tweaks. Now I think I understand what happened, thanks to this video

@@jerodoque Cool beans. Yes, that's pretty much what I would (intentionally) do when a factory bike. They come with pro-squat geometry with the very limited cheap shock. I do believe that is intentional, because manufacturers believe that understeer is safer for most riders coming out of a corner, than oversteer/high-side crashes. They would rather error on the side of understeer/plowing than risk going too far. Just like new cars and trucks being set to understeer when a slide happens. A lot of my research about motorcycle purchases revolves around the availability of suspension and brake parts from the aftermarket because I've lived with factory crap suspension with way too many motorcycles over the years. I've felt quality suspension and I've felt budget suspension. Quality is better. But it's one thing to swap a shock. It's another thing to set it up correctly.

that sprocket section makes complete sense, i used to try to think of other ways to change anti-squat and i really couldnt think of any other way to do it other than moving the three points around in relation to one another. The swingarm pivot, countershaft sprocket and rear sprocket. Id also never heard of the term chain pull but it perfectly describes what's going on, the chain pulling on the rear sprocket and axle wants to bring the swingarm towards the frame but because the swingarm pivot is off center to the force being applied, the swingarm angles itself down towards the ground

Well put. I agree. ...On the topic, some really successful racers that I know and have known, swear that all bikes rise as you accelerate. This is simply not true. Maybe "all bikes" that they have raced do. But not all bikes do. It all depends on your setup. ...Also on this subject, just because your anti-squat number is above 100% (for instance 105%), doesn't mean that 5% will be enough to counteract the force that acceleration will have on your bike's tendency to squat. That's exactly why I find the Superduke's 107% is not enough. At least it's not enough for me.

Not mention lowering the triples. Down 14mm with triples, up 18mm with shock, link rod and sports link on my kwaka. All I try to dial out is a wollow with ktrc on low. (Ride mainly unseen canyon goat tracks) Looks like you can't drop the triples on a 1290. Great video and information. Have been experimenting with sprocket sizes for gear ratios, now I will add squat to the butt feel. My rsv1000r at turn 9 Eastern creek 2010, either squated or spun between 2 clicks of comp on the rear ohlins. I went up 1 on spring and I had one perfect compression click, although I did also remove a link from the chain.

You know what's interesting, and completely unexpected - lowering the nose does help trail, but it flattens the swingarm angle too. It's amazing how adjusting one simple thing on a motorcycle always seems to effect seven other things..

I think the +20mm link is turning out to be the best option, it’s a fraction of the cost of any of the length adjustable shocks and gives you the same result. And if you want to change to a better shock you just need to set it to the standard shock length.

  • @superduked33

Also the +20 Sportlink reduces some of that nasty progression of the spring rate. Longer shocks don't do that.

I thought superbikes tend to lift the rear under acceleration ? As a result of the chain trying to pull the wheel towards the engine.

  • @superduked33

    @superduked33

    9 күн бұрын

I think lift / no lift / anti-squat #s are not the same across the board. I think different bikes have different needs. For example at round 1 this year my shock was handed back to me, after being serviced at the track, shorter than I had it. The result of that was less rear ride height / less swingarm angle / less anti-squat. My rear tire spun everywhere. It was super difficult to ride fast. In fact I lost against the same bike that I beat an hour later by half a straight - once I lengthened the shock again. Night vs day difference. So I'm sure you are right, for some bikes. But the SDR holds its motor farther back than most sportbikes, like the S1000RR for example. This could be why it wants so much more anti-squat. Having said that though, I spoke with the chassis guy who sets up some of the fastest 600s in the AFM, he said he aims for anti-squat of "18". So in the end I think it's best to go with what you feel and experience out there. Good quation, thanks for contributing

@@superduked33 It could also be by design, the superduke is marketed as the ultimate hooligan bike made for wheelies and burnouts. Perhaps the increased amount of trail makes rolling burnouts easier since the front wheel wants to stay in line with the direction of travel easer, and the lack of anti-squat promotes weight shifting to the rear tire so it wheelies even easier under power, the reason the superdukes are known for just wanting to wheelie 24/7 might not just be the engine but also chassis design, thats my hypothesis at least

@@gabrielibarra5551I agree with your thoughts regarding design/concept of the Super Duke. It is clearly promoted as something different than an super vike without fairings. "The only bike designed as an super naked from bottom up", is a statement I've heard from KTM. I guess KTM know what market and consumer they need to design their bikes to, to make it a sound business still going forward. It is always a compromise selling to all consumers. Really appreciate Eric's effort with getting the bike handling the best for track, as there is no track dedicated LC8 motored bike in the market any longer.
