I have used knitting needles for socks as embossing tools. Some of the points are quite small, but they are rounded so they don't cut into the paper. You could also go as big as you want if you have a range of knitting needles on hand.

Just a small addition: the name biro for ballpoint pen comes from the name of the inventor of the pen Bíró László József who invented and improved the mechanism and the special ink for it, so it doesn't have to rely on gravity only and won't smear like the previous versions. He was Hungarian but had to emigrate because of the anti-jew legislation in the late 30s. He got the patent for the pen on 1943 and had a factory for mass producing in Argentina.

I was wondering how to do it for watercolor pencils & am thrilled that I can now use it for both light & dark lines. Thanks for sharing this with us.

How interesting. I used similar for marking metal before cutting it to shape. We called that a scribe. But for marking paper, a cut up plastic card, or a small stick put through a pencil sharpener. Both did a basic job. But muck ups were frequent. Many thanks for telling us about these little tools. Oh year, and really love that ring too. It puts me in mind of a Neil Diamond song called "I am I said". TTFN.

Very nice video using the embossing tool. I also use it for scoreing lines I wish to fold, in cardmaking. and sometimes making borders for tiles when i zentangle. Its definitely a scratch tool for paint. A great way to make name tags. one can also use it with graffite. And a dotting tool for painted rocks. nails, or woodwork, yes one can deboss wood. allowing the dark stains to melt into the lines you make. I also use mine in sewing keeping my fingers out of the way of the needle but pushing the fabric when it needs it. YOu can use it to score your pumpkin on halloween and the knife will follow along the score line.

They are also called spotting tools, because they can be used to paint spots with acrylic, often to decorate stones, or in nail art. I find them really useful to paint fine details with masking fluid. I also use them to transfer more difficult tracings to my watercolour paper if I am not confident enough to draw by hand. I print out the line drawing on tracing/vellum paper, turn it around and with a squiggly motion go over the back of the lines with a soft pencil, turn it the right way round and use that embossing tool to go over the lines to transfer to the watercolour paper ( without pressing hard or denting the paper).

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber The ruling pen is better for long lines, but for dots or little areas or very short strokes this works better. It doesn't hold much fluid though, for that the ruling pen is better.
