Excellent suggestions Michele! One thing that really helps me is to write notes on the backs of my paintings. Before I started doing this, I would look at a painting some time later and wonder: What paper is this? What colors or mixes did I use? What brand of paints are these? I also include notes about what I want to improve, with suggestions to myself. This is such a valuable reference to me. Instead of always painting something different, I like to do a series of the same painting, and I really see the improvement as I progress. Especially when working on a particular area or skill I want to improve, this has really helped me.

Oh man! Composition is SO important! If my composition is crap it doesn't matter how beautifully I paint it, it will never be a good painting. Pushing through a painting is important to me too. If I've decided it's a fail then I'm free to take chances because I've already binned it in my mind. That's when I learn the most because I've lost the fear of running it.
I always feel so much more confident about taking on my next watercolour project Michele after watching your videos. Everything highlighted in today's video makes so much more sense when you explain how much we can improve, by just taking that extra care in preparation. Your motivational encouragement is priceless. Thank for opening up a whole new world for me 🙏❤️

I stumbled upon many of these the hard way and they truly help. Charts are the best! My greens in particular improved so much once I made charts and started going to the "paint store" to select the right swatches for a painting. I Really need to work on some of the other boring stuff and deliberate practice though. Thank you for all your efforts.

Thanks, I needed this today. I, too, am coming back to painting after a long gap. I used to be quite good at painting, at least in part by doing the things you recommend. I have started to do something that is improving my morale and feeding my desire to improve. I tape each 'finished' work up on the wall in front of me in the order of when I did them. If I learn something that can improve the work, I go back in and try to apply the new technique. By the way, I enjoyed hearing about your life story, finding an awful lot (but not all) that I have endured, too. I watch several of your tutorials at least 5 days a week.

I fully agree with the idea that good materials can make a huge difference in your output, and it's quality. I think this needs special emphasis with watercolour. I run into people who think they will start oil painting in 10 years when they get enough money. So they paint with watercolour, "for now". This is upside down (except for finding studio space). Watercolour is uniformly more expensive. The paper costs more than professional boards, and other media. Linen canvases are expensive, but the Mona Lisa was painted on a board. You can use bristle brushes that cost 5 dollars to make a masterpiece, no 150 dollar mops. And the paints are about the same, that does depend on your style. If you don't have good materials for watercolour, you are doomed. There are many levels, I would suggest getting artist level equipment if you want to grow, just don't get junk, and you don't have to get paint that was hand milled by fairies either. But you need good stuff. Some of your skills leaned with junk will have to be re-learned when you finally move up, and if you want to sell any work, you need to use good quality materials so that your work lasts, as water colours can be fugitive.

I have found getting 3 better quality brushes have made such a huge difference to how I paint.
Great suggestions as always. I really need to spend more time on planning and drawing, especially the latter. I'm wanting to jump right in with the painting and, as you know, that seldom ends well. The odd thing is, I used to love to draw from when I was very little up until sometime in high school. I really don't know why I avoid (dread?) it now, but I will try to get past this self-inflicted obstacle. Thanks for the advice, Michele, and best wishes from Minnesota.

Oh yes, step back and review. I've been slowly working through a sketch pad, some progress, regress etc. One pic I did of a hand I hated, each time I did my pre-new sketch review of the previous sketches, I still hated it, tinkered with it and moved on. One day, I was determined to work out why the sketch was so awful. 😆 the hand had 6 digits! Once I saw that, it was easy to correct but it literally was weeks of looking at it.

Hi Gina. Ah, we all avoid some things, but sometimes we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone. :-)
I agree with you about keeping your watercolours uncontaminated. I hate blue spills in my yellow pans! I would never dab a brush loaded with color A into a pan of color B, just to pick up some more B. However, I also come across watercolorists who don't care much about contamination: they say a palette with less vibrant colors suits their art style more. To each his/her own, I guess! ;-)
@OneTrueWord1988

Paula Bean: I'm always amazed by how many really excellent painters on youtube have such cross-contaminated paints, that all the paints on their palette look like one muddy color! And yet they are creating beautiful paintings! Like you, I can't just blithely dip from one color into another, and I really can't see myself ever changing. 😊💐😻

Thanks for sharing this motivational video of great tips for improvement with us. I am just learning to take some time with my drawing, planning my layout and especially learning to take a break & step away from the work. I have always thought of getting a detailed practice or drawing done in a day’s time. I used monthly challenges for deliberate practice. These ideas are helpful. Thank you. I find, for myself, that stepping away is quite magical. I may not be happy about some aspect of my card (I am a greeting card maker, not really an artist) and i set it aside. When I come back later and see it I can either see what needs changing, or adding or I may think it is quite nice after all. (Or I may find it is not worth going on any further!). So that is a really good idea, to step away. On the other hand, what I need to do more of is the analization. I need to think about why I really like something I have done or why I don't like it. What can I change in the future? What can I do to make it even better? My little "works of art" cards are little gifts I make because I enjoy making them, but I can send them off very affordably and let others enjoy them too. And if by chance they don't like them, they can toss them out and I will never know! (smile) I love your videos and am grateful to have all this education for free. That is very kind of you.
I think one’s talent and ability starts in your head and then moves to a visual experience.
Beginner that used what I had on hand. Good for practice strokes but just hit a paint sale and the difference is inspiring. Also bought better paper. Plan to upgrade brushes when I learn to be kinder to them... 😂
A very important adjunct idea to deliberate practice is to be conscious of when you are practicing, and when you are producing. In the golf analogy, practice could be lessons, or time at the driving range, etc... Going to the course can also be practice, though in general, when you play, you are applying what you learned, and you are trying to achieve your best score. Amateurs very often do not separate practice from doing. If you are always practicing when you should be producing, you never really bring it together, and you also sometimes set yourself up for failure as you may attempt projects that are well beyond your ability, I never got good at music, and one reason was that I never actually achieved a perfect run through of anything. The moment I conquered the main challenges of a piece, I set myself a new goal. I never actually played a piece through perfectly. Yuck. But that is a common approach. I see it in particular in woodworking, when the materials are expensive, and people want to make that cabinet, or boat. Everything is a "project".
Yes yes yes, all great content but to your point, it was the biscuit clarification that did it for me...

Oh Michelle you really do know my dark secrets!! 🤣 There I was feeling all smug because as you went through your list of tips, I was thinking I do that, I do that, etc, etc. However, then you got to your last tip. Doing colour charts!! I have so avoided doing colour charts - it doesn't appeal to me one little bit. Sooo boring and, to be honest, I also don't really know where to start with it as I have quite a lot of colours. I also know that getting colours right is what I am very bad at. So now I have to challenge myself. Thank you as always. Although I still don't want to do it!! 😂

I accidentally picked up my brush differently and it solved a problem involving the corners of shapes
You’ve read my mind😩
Do you mean to clean palette completely so it is paint free for the next painting? Taking breaks is true, I found. When I began watercolor, I always wanted it to be finished in one go. And I now also analyse my work and write on the back what is needing improvement. And l am trying to use less water! Thanks for all your videos .
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
2 жыл бұрын
Well it depends, if you are using pans or the palette has been filled with paints and allowed to dry, and you always use the same colors, you may only need to clean the surface of the dried wells and the mixing areas.
Thank you Michele. So useful as always I have recently stated cleaning my palette at the end of every painting and it is a lovely feeling starting clean I have been putting off stretching my A4 paper as I know you have to cut off the taped area or cover it with a Mount I have often framed my A4 paintings in an A4 frame because I have left a border. How do you suggest framing A4 paper where you have cut the tape off and have reduced the size. Thank you. Rosie
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
3 жыл бұрын
You can either buy loose sheets of watercolor paper and cut the paper a little bigger than A4 to allow for reduction where the tape is. This is cheaper than buying pads of paper. Or you can arrange so the mount (or Mat) covers the tape. You should never frame a watercolor painting without a mount (mat) as it will damage the artwork as damp will build up under the glass, leading to spores and mould.

Your biscuits, my cookies. Yes. Biscuits and gravy is a common breakfast dish in the USA (in the picture that you presented, please note the visual for an "American" biscuit). It is routine mostly in "the south" (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, etc.) but is not uncommon in other regions. My favorite "biscuits" are warm and are loaded with chocolate chips. Taste divine, but the brown smudges on my art paper are difficult to incorporate into my picture.

Hi Michele I have a question. I am practicing my art every day, but it is costing a lot of money for all the art supplies. Especially watercolour paper and paints. I go through on average a tube of watercolour paint each month (but spent over multiple colours). But I am improving so fast, painting nearly every day. Do you have any thoughts on this and is it normal to be spending hundreds of dollars on supplies that you can't redeem by selling art? In New Zealand in particular, paper is extraordinarily expensive. I have started ordering from the UK where it is around half the cost and I just need to wait a few weeks for the shipping
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
3 жыл бұрын
Paper costs have risen in recent years worldwide. The cheapest way is to buy big sheets of 140lb and stretch it. If you stretch you can use thinner paper. Staining colours will last longer than non. For example Phthalo blue watered down can look similar to Cerulean, but you will get through a ton of Cerulean by contrast. The cheapest paint for the highest pigment I have found is White Nights by St Petersburg. Hope that helps!
