    Loved the variety (not just December kickstarters), thank you!

    In Architects of the West you can also capture your own workers by going to the Town Centre. Instead of going to the capture area of your board they simply go back to the worker pool.

    Cool right?! I wish it was slightly more obvious, but it is a neat pseudo-easter egg that I think really works.

    Crazy that my friend talked about his experience playing Shadow Hunters the other day and I had never heard of it. Looked it up because we like social deduction, hidden role games but yeah thanks for your impressions. I'm getting gizmos tomorrow and looking forward to playing it soon!

    Honestly I was hesitant about it because I knew it was a memory game and assumed it was the traditional "flip two cards and see if they match" kind of game. I was intrigued once reading the rules, and now very happy to have enjoyed it.

    Thanks, Jon, for reviewing Pandoria! With 4 players, we recommend playing teams, 2 verses 2. It's the same rules, except VP are added together and marked with 1 VP marker (but each player still keeps track of their own resources). One of the things I like about this game is how you can score big on a turn, if you have built up the right engine and also built up a nice region to go with that engine. It can be jarring for players who have gotten used to the typical "baby step" efficiency games, but it's so much more satisfying to pull something like that off in Pandoria. It might be disheartening for opponents to suddenly fall behind by a large margin when this happens, but it will usually take some time for the leader to get back into a position to score again, as he/she has usually committed many workers and resources to scoring that one region. During this time, the other players have opportunities to score for themselves and get back in the game. There were many playtests where this happened and I thought to myself, "back to the drawing board--it's too unbalanced" only to later claw back into the lead and even win the game! Pandoria does "swim against the stream" of many recent games that try to keep players' scores close throughout. It gives players opportunities for "big plays" and doesn't try to reign them in with artificial catch-up mechanisms. Instead, it has natural, built-in ones (having workers committed to a now-worthless part of the board), and it rewards experience and perseverance. There's nothing more satisfying from covering a big deficit to eek out a victory at the finish line!

    Thanks for the feedback Jeffrey, and the really interesting game. 2v2 for a 4p game does make sense when I think about it. I'm looking forward to more plays, and definitely leaning in to the massive point turns.

    The "improved Clue" was Mystery of the Abbey by Days of Wonder. This is a little hard to find now. Also a recent kickstarter, Awkward Guests, is supposed to be a very good deduction game.

    Hi Jon! You say it yourself & I'll just confirm it: don't underestimate the ability of children! They're able to pick up most concepts pretty easily. Now of course interests vary but my son learnt Alhambra and Carcasonne when he was 6-7, gravitated up to 7 Wonders & Castles of Burgundy when he was 8, became a Gloomhaven addict at 9 (including trying to 'Alpha Gamer my wife 🤣) and has won our last 2 games of Founders of Gloomhaven (he hasn't beaten me yet at Terraforming Mars though 😉) ...he's just turned 11! The main thing for children is their concentration span is not so long - we normally split the longer games over 2 days. Enjoying the videos as always!

    This is some great context, thanks Dave! I may not have kids of my own but I do have two young nephews in town (they are both under 3yo) and I can't wait to start gaming with them. I know I shouldn't be wishing they were older, but I can't help myself sometimes :P

    Nice video! I grabbed Dice Hospital last minute just before they stopped taking orders for the US (they are shipping again later this month). I REALLY enjoy it. I mainly play it solo and it is a great little puzzle. I'm only sad that the ambulances are not used in Solo.

  • @JonGetsGames

    That's great to hear. I didn't bother reading the solo rules since I never play that way, it is too bad the ambulances aren't used there.

  • @benjamincontant9531

    I didn't go through all of them but it seems to me like most the Dice Hospital events are positive. I recommend one of the (or both) variants where you either start with 5 dice (instead of 3) or where you pluck and roll an additional dice from the bag when you grab an ambulance (effectively adding 4 dice instead of 3 each turn)

  • @JonGetsGames

    @JonGetsGames

    Huh, this is good to know. I'll likely still play with them, but also probably throw those extra variants too for my next play.

    Regarding Gizmos, there aren't any changes to setup for higher player counts - the same number of cards are in the offer. I expect that makes the "archive" action (draft for later) and "research" action (draw N cards and pick one instead of taking a face-up card) more important with more players. Also, boosting the research action might mitigate some of the randomness, since you can dig for a card that works for you (and you can build it right away, so it's not any slower than using a face-up card).

  • @JonGetsGames

    @JonGetsGames

    5 жыл бұрын

    Huh, well silly me for making an assumption there. I agree that those actions were underutilized in our play, and could see both being much more important with more players. I really am looking forward to trying this one again.

    Nice video Jon. And congrats on being the only content producer to actually get close to pronouncing Ceylon correctly. The emphasis is on the "lon" not the "Cey", as you at least attempted :) and yes, it's the former name of Sri Lanka when it was under British rule. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks! Though I can't take much credit, I didn't do research on it. Instead I mentioned it to my british friend Elaine and she responded "oh you mean Ceylon" (pronouncing it like I said in the video) and I decided to go with her interpretation because she was familiar with the word and I had never seen it before.

    JonGetsGames Yes, us Brits of a certain age learnt about Ceylon at school, (but I’m sure Efka and Elaine are much younger than me so maybe they didn’t) but it still gets mentioned on TV etc. occasionally. Was nice to meet you at Essen, by the way....

    So I finally decided to show my Patreon Support to the channel :D Carson City: I like that Worker Placement mechanic of unused workers carrying over to future rounds. Thinking about it, imagine if there were a Worker Placement game where you start with several workers but as the game progresses, your working count goes down. You know I always liked Clue, the only problem is I never had enough people interested in playing when I was a kid :( Have you tried those two new modern crime games recently released?

  • @JonGetsGames

    Thanks again for the support Brian! Regarding the modern crime games, I assume you mean Detectives and Chronicles of Crime. I did play one scenario of Chronicles of crime earlier this year and really enjoyed it. You can see my initial impressions of it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aax8k6mTp5fJiso.html . I have a copy of it now and I'm looking forward to more plays. I also have a copy of Detectives, but at this point haven't yet cracked it open. I really do want to though.

    Nautilus Traps is basically our least favorite unlock game. Squeak and Sausage is probably still our favorite. So far I prefer unlock to exit because of the story / adventure aspect.

    @@Ogrecrusher Well it's nice to hear this, because I was pretty bummed at not even finishing it. We were showing the game to an old friend who isn't' familiar with modern gaming and I was especially bummed to see it crash and burn in that context. He still enjoyed the experience though, and could see how it could have been great.

    For me and my wife, the first 2 sets of Unlock had a miss in each for us. We really didn't enjoy The Island of Doctor Goorse due to the gimmick that happens near the start, and the Nautilus Traps was our least favourite by far, so many bad moments in that one. The 3rd set of 3 were all hits for us though.

    You should ask your friend Owen to put the characters he made as downloadable files on BGG if you think this really makes Shadow Hunter better, because for me Shadow Hunter was "meh" at best, but I would try it with new characters if you say they improve the game.

    It would be great if he'd do that, but I doubt he even has the files anymore (he made all of these more than 7 years ago).Maybe I can get him to post them into a forum post.

    I thought Nautilus Trap wasn't too hard, but that electric panel was pretty awful though. Still good overall. Enjoyed Sunken Treasure as well. Our favorite escape in a box is Escape Room: The Game. Worst one so far was Deckscape: The Fate of London (although the other 2 Deckscape were decent; Heist in Venice being the best one).

    I was so surprised at how into the weeds we got in Nautilus Traps, as I said it was our 5th Unlock game so it's not like we were new to the mechanics. Sometimes an experience just whiffs I suppose.
