This entire thing is a work of art. Genuinely. Almost perfect performance art with unwitting participants. I like that some of the crowd recognize it as such in the end, when Sal has to read. And then when he exits with the line "Thank you. I have a phone call to make." They all cheer. I dunno, it hits a weird kind of 'life imitating art, imitating life' vibe with me. The best part is, that's not even what it was supposed to be. But everyone there, and even me, sort of understood it to be that. I love it.

It’s not so much TruTV’s choice. It’s to comply with US censorship laws for television and radio that were made decades ago that censor certain vulgar words and images. Asshole is one of the words they legally can’t show or say, since the show has a TV-14 rating in the US. They would need a Mature rating to use the word uncensored, which would negatively affect the show’s advertising opportunities and time slot for the show. So that’s one of the words they just have to bleep and censor, along with a few others. The censorship guidelines are kinda strange, because jackass is perfectly fine to use.

My conclusion is that the punishments are themed by character. Although, they do periodically throw in a punishment that is off-theme for the character to keep things fresh and unpredictable. Q's punishments are straight out of MTV's Jackass and usually involve real or perceived danger to himself or actual physical discomfort/straight-up pain (backpack from alligator, electro-shock labor simulation, tarantula crawling on him, sheriff beatdown, miss-a-shot = hit by baseball bat) but they'll mix it up with some that are just funny (Rosie O'Donnell, baseball breakdance) Sal's punishments fall into 2 categories - the first involve him doing something that is socially disruptive and unacceptable, and then after being condemned for it is forced to repeat the act again and again (whose phone is ringing, Bingo, library porn, bad golf manners) and the second being things that triggers his phobias of cats and germs (creepy cat, deliver a baby cow, pick up dog droppings, first cell phone in a garbage dumb and later keys in a pile of elephant poop, bathroom of horror, and the ultimate elevator of horror.) Murr's theme of punishment is drawing attention to himself in an awkward situation, whether its short term-large audience (being drawn naked, statue of liberty, like a boss, public lie detector) or small audience-long term/permanent (pierced nipples, license, passport, wear Q's hair for a year, and I swear the tattoo punishment was aimed at him.) You're right in that Joe's punishments are diverse but I think there is a common thread - ratings. I think the cast and crew acknowledge that Joe is by far the most naturally-gifted entertainer/performer and just put him in situations where his charisma can shine and entertain (belly-dancer and genie. announcing fart in theater, public deuce with no TP, supermodel tech developer, mystery strippergram, language-barrier saxophone, and of course, Captain Fatbelly.) My question deals with the meta of the show: if these 4 are indeed friends (and I'll get to that in a second), are they really playing towards each other's weaknesses and trying to expose them in punishments, or are they playing towards their strengths? Meaning, do they always put Murr in situations of public display because in real life he is a more private person and that's hitting him where it hurts, or do they do this to him because members of the audience can relate to the exhibited embarrassment but in real life James is a man who likes to be the center of attention and is better able to handle the situations? In real life does Sal even dislike cats, and similarly is very courageous/confident to be able to handle the situations of repeated social disruptions? In real life is Q a daredevil masochist who enjoys the simulated pain of childbirth and gets excited about the experience of wrestling an alligator or being thrown through a window? One would think that if they are indeed friends and have a kinship that would lead to some degree of caring about each other (and being able to handle the situations repeatedly enough to enjoy the longevity of the show's success), then they wouldn't put each other in their own personal hell as this would inevitably lead to ruining their friendship and the show? Which leads to the final meta query that I have - are these really friends who go back to grade school or are they 4 actors who auditioned for a role on the show? You see many pictures of the characters when they were younger, but I don't recall ever seeing any pictures of them together when they were younger.
