I never understood imposter syndrome until today. I cried because I feel like I don’t deserve my current job and soon they’ll find out I really can’t do graphic design and print jobs. The evident success exercise is a really good idea because it forces me to think about what I can do, what my strengths are, and how I can use that to my advantage. I’ll be sure to do this often, and it’ll probably even help me sleep better at night.

I'm South African and I've been following you for a couple months. Initially found you while searching for art videos, but I really enjoy the diversity of your content. I'm a lifelong quadriplegic (I have cerebral palsy) and because I'm goal-oriented and stubborn, people tend to call me inspirational. I cringe inwardly every time, because my imposter syndrome is like, "You've fooled all these people and you don't deserve their praise." So yeah, this was a very relatable video. Keep 'em coming.

I find a lot of people also idealise people that they are inspired by. Idealisation, as well as objectification, is one way people can (inadvertently) dehumanise other people. So that awestruck feeling you pick up from other people may also be because you think that they are not seeing the real you, I.e. they don't see you as a real person, I.e. dehumanising you. At least, that may be your perception. Of course, maybe they do see you as a real person and that's why they are inspired. Often the most inspirational people are people that others can relate to, while still doing something those people admire and aspire to

Oh yes, agreed. I think some stuff geared toward younger people would be amazing. It's so much more helpful to learn these kinds of things when you're still growing and learning about yourself in the formative years than when those negative ideas have sort of cemented. You have to use much more effort to break through when you're older and the negative thoughts feel like facts. I'm sure it would be helpful to kids and teens to see this.

Omg thank you so much!!! I have 3 essays due and grades are in today and a part of why I’ve been struggling is because my professor keeps describing my essays as “thoroughly excellent“ or the best essay he’s read on that topic or the best he’s received by far from the class/whole course and is constantly talking about how high my writing quality is so now whenever I’m writing these I’m so stressed about whether or not it will fit his standards or he’ll be like “oh man guess you actually kinda suck” because I feel like those were really flukes and not even of my doing and all of my current pieces are so bad they’re not even close to even being passable (and actually thank you for all the videos like this that you make -I’ve rewatched & sent the perfectionism one to so many of my friends who now constantly refer to it when speaking about how they managed to get something done and find it super helpful!!)

I just want to let you know I keep coming back to this video. I have actually been doing this exercise (both part 1 and part 2) everyday since December. The best part is looking through all the reasons from part 2 when you're dealing with impostor syndrome. When we're dealing with negative emotions, it can consume all our focus and we tend to forget the good things that happened, even if it was just yesterday. Reminding yourself all the good you did previously really helps you feel a lot better about yourself. I REALLY RECOMMEND THIS EXERCISE TO EVERYONE

I'll not lie. This video absolutely made me cry, BUT NOT IN A BAD WAY. I've, without a doubt, beaten myself down for years, despite so many good things and people coming into my life. It's gone on so long that I fear the negative image of myself is starting to become the image that others see in me, rather than the me they used to see. I've literally hated everything about myself for so long, even though I tried to do something about it. Doing these excercises may just be what I needed, even if they're just a nudge in the right direction. And yes, absolutely, keep doing these types of videos. You, your content, and everything you put out is amazing. Don't let anyone, or yourself, let you think otherwise.

Imposter syndrome has stolen so many shit and diamond pumping years from me (such a good metaphor) and this video gives me hope I won’t have to listen to it forever. I have that giddy feeling you get when you meet someone new and you're smitten. They are these simple little creatures but I draw them based off weird moments in my life and I can't help but laugh at what I've created at the end. I loved the drawing advice from that video and paired with this one I think I might actually break out of my artistic slump that I've been in for almost a decade. Being a good and kind person is often taught behaviour. Parents/guardians/teachers/pastors etc teach kids in small ways how to be good and kind through small acts; helping to feed pets, sharing snacks or toys, offering to let someone else pick a show to watch first, cleaning up after yourself at a restaurant and so on and so on. Many people think "Well I'm not a good person naturally" so they think that's set in stone and they never will be. I think it's never too late to start learning those small things and doing them until it's more natural and you dont think twice about doing it. It's a nice thing to keep in mind if one of your issues is that you don't think you're a good system and you worry that forcing yourself to do kind things just to have something for your list is "cheating the system/list". It's really just building kindness into a habit so you can turn the habit into a character trait with time. It's a great start and even if the kind act isn't coming from a genuine place yet, with practice it can do that eventually. Especially when you form that positive path way for yourself and you find the joy in doing nice things and seeing them positively impact others and you feel like a good person instead of an imposter.

"If the goal is noble, your commitment to the goal should not be contingent on your ability to attain it, and in pursuit of our goal, we must release our rigid assumptions about how we must achieve it. Peace and equanimity come from letting go of our attachment to the goal and the method. That is the essence of acceptance. Reflecting on this seeming paradox, of pursuing a goal yet with no attachment to its outcome, Jinpa explained to me that there is an important insight. This is a deep recognition that while each of us should do everything we can to realize the goal we seek, whether or not we succeed often depends on many factors beyond our control. So our responsibility is to pursue the goal with all the dedication we can muster, do the best we can but not become fixated on a preconceived notion of a result. Sometimes, actually quite often, our efforts lead to an unexpected outcome that might even be better than what we originally had in mind. " Lama, Dalai; Tutu, Desmond; Abrams, Douglas Carlton. As an animator struggling with similar issues to you, some of the subjects you've made videos about have really helped. You find a very concise way to phrase things that make stuff click better for me and have a very refreshing perspective. It's therapeutic in a way to find a channel that very openly discusses things I'm dealing with. Vulnerability you display in these videos alone is kinda cathartic to watch, glad I found your channel ^^ Now if only I could get over the struggle of developing a journaling habit :D

i'm applying to colleges rn and having to look back on the last four years on my life and all the diamonds and shit that's come with it has made my imposter syndrome so much worst. I'll just spend hours looking at an essay prompt, trying to come up with a way to show that I'm worthy of being accepted into that school but come up with absolutely nothing. i just feel so inadequate that I've literally had moments where I broke down in tears. and I've tried to explain this feeling to my friends and family and all they say is "don't worry about it, it'll be fine," which in turn honestly just makes me feel worse. but watching your video really put how I was feeling into words and it made me feel a bit more at peace with my imposter syndrome. I'm definitely gonna try out the exercise, thank you so much for this

I really appreciate your mental health series as a therapist, as a struggling creative, and as a human who has been working through my own mental health issues over the past decade. I love love love the metaphor you used for creating new neural pathways; I always find myself bogged down by science when trying to describe this to clients and hadn't found a great metaphor that felt right to me, but this one is perfect. I love that this is featured on an art channel because you're reaching so many more folks that would never search for mental health videos. Keep on keeping on with your good work, and thank you

This is the MOST helpful video I have ever seen on the imposter syndrome and I can’t BEGIN to thank u enough! I am going to begin the exercises today and I have a very strong feeling my bowls of shit will have diamonds in them soon! I have been working on myself FOR YEARS with a lot of bowls of shit coming forth. I am READY FOR MY DIAMONDS TO BEGIN TO APPEAR!

The Shit and Diamonds machine is spot on, and it’s even scarier while getting a new model in midlife that starts pumping out shit to start. Thanks for the actionable steps, that’s really something I’ve been looking for to help break myself out off the path of least resistance. Better than therapy for real.

I love this so much! Never stop pulling the lever. It's so important not to give up, when people critique your work. You can't please everyone, but if you just touch one person or inspire someone, I think it will be worth it

I found your channel about 6mos ago and you’ve really inspired me to post my work, put myself out there and not give a shit about what people think because they’re not going to see what I see. And life’s too short. Also as artists and creators I think we naturally look for the negative instead of appreciating the positive and taking both sides equally 😊 anyway love your content and look forward to your videos!

Wonderful video! I have suffered from this for most of my life. I've read enough self-help books to fill a library and even during your video, the knowledge I have of this condition and others, I was finding myself finishing your sentences. You sharing this with literally the world makes it easier to understand that I am not alone with this and that I am a good person. I like the journaling idea so much! Love love love these videos and the way you explain things! Hope you have a great holiday!

I’m 31 yo and finally coming across this knowledge, I’ve heard of it before but recently a friend of mine mentioned it. Except my machine has been making mostly diarrhea my entire life, and starting to poop out little nuggets of gold for the first time ever. I also heard that imposter syndrome makes you very meticulous when it comes to performing higher tasks and which is why your ultimately right for the position that you lack confidence in, and way more competence.

Great video. Question 5 was answered in the 1950s by the grandfather of personal psychology, Carl Rogers. The core belief causing human suffering (and imposter syndrome) is the belief that your worth as a person depends on what you do. That your worth is conditional. When you change that belief, imposter syndrome just falls away, leaving you free. X

LOVED it! When I watch similar 'Mental Health' content, most of the time I get the feeling that the people presenting those information do not know how it is to struggle with their thoughts, anxiety etc. I think you really are authentic and it helps so much seeing other people having gone through the same shit you have to go now. It does inspire me a lot, thank you for that!
