Hello, Africans don't worship our ancestors, that's a misconception. Today 90% of Africans are either Christian or Muslim. But we still practice our traditional ceremonies as part of our cultural heritage, not to 'worship ancestors' as many Westerners wrongly believe. Traditionally we worship God and deities/gods and believed in spirituality meaning everything in everyday life is influenced by spirits, so constant communication with them is important. Some spirits are of departed ancestors. It was also important to remember the legacy of the dead, as we wouldn't exist without them. Ancestors symbolised a solid foundation, without which, the community would sink into the abyss. It's no different from Europeans commemorating WW1 or WW2 veterans and their sacrifices every year. Else they'll be back to warring with each other again.
