Importing RAW images into Lightroom Classic | PPT Lightroom Classic

Lightroom Classic is great at helping you organize your RAW images... but that's inside of Lightroom. Raw images can fill up a hard drive pretty fast, it's good to know where your Raw images will be saved and how best to organize them. In this video Trent will show you how he creates an organized system for saving his Raw images in Lightroom Classic. This process will make it much easier to manage, move and backup your original images once you have an external hard drive.
This is the start of a series of videos all about Lightroom Classic so be sure to subscribe to follow along.

    I am brand new to my new camera and RAW/jpeg. When I am going to import my photos from my ScanDisk to Lightroom, do the photos also stay on the ScanDisk, or do they all have a new home off of it? How secure is Lightroom in storing images? We are traveling and our hard drive is back at home (it has everything on it from the computer) should I get another hard drive dedicated to only my photos? And can I download all of the Lightroom photos to a hard drive at a later time?

  • @TheVisualCenter

    @TheVisualCenter

    Ria, congratulations on the new camera! Great questions! The photos will stay on the memory card after importing. Never use a memory card as permanent storage of images. You’ll want to reformat the memory card occasionally… make sure your images are backed up prior to reformatting. The RAW images you import through LrC are copied to whatever location you selected when importing. They exist independent from LrC. What you’re editing in LrC is a copy of your original image. So the question should be “How secure are my RAW images on my computer after importing?” Always create multiple backups of your original images on multiple drives. Hard drives fail, so prepare by creating multiple copies on different drives. If you can locate your RAW images on your computer you can copy them to an external hard drive whenever you like. We’ll be going over these topics in future videos so be sure to watch for them. Thank you for the questions.

    I'm trying to transition from Bridge to Lightroom. Lc seems way to complicated to do the basic import/folder process that was done by a simple preset in Bridge.

    Thanks for the comment Frank. LrC does provide a lot of options during import, which I can see would seem more difficult. I often find that transitioning/learning different software can feel complicated. If you have any specific question don’t hesitate to reach out.

  • @TheVisualCenter

    RAW images often look less vivid because they are unprocessed. You need to edit them to bring back those colors. Have you imported images into Lightroom before having this issue?

  • @TheVisualCenter

    Are you shooting with 2 memory cards? It’s possible that your camera is set to record RAWs to one slot and your JPEGs to the other. And if one of those slots is empty then that format just doesn’t get recorded at all. Would that be the case for you? Let us know, and if not describe more details on what exactly happens.

    What is going on if I am hitting import and nothing is happening or if I get to select a folder on my desktop to import, it only lets me select one image and it then does nothing. I’m so frustrated and just trying to import raw images from ad card….don’t know what is going on.

  • @TheVisualCenter

    @TheVisualCenter

    2 жыл бұрын

    That would be frustrating! Are you able to click the first image and then hold down shift and click on a range of images? Should highlight all the images in between your two clicks. If multiple images are highlighted then you can select one of the checkboxes under one of the highlighted images. This should check the other highlighted images as well. Are you able to select “Check All” near the bottom of the image viewing window?

    What does back up mean? My pictures once exported to my external have an exclamation mark why is that? When I open the edited pictures on LRC from my external I get two pictures exactly the same, one I can open and the other one is the one with the exclamation mark.

  • @TheVisualCenter

    @TheVisualCenter

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello royaltykidsTV, by back up we mean copying your images to an additional external drive. That way, if anything happens to your computer or your working external drive, the second external drive will be a back up. If you’re seeing an exclamation mark on images in Lightroom it means the images have been moved since you imported them into Lightroom… or Lightroom can’t locate the original/source image. If you click on the exclamation mark and then navigate to wherever the image is (where ever you saved the original image file) and select it the exclamation mark will disappear. If you’re seeing two images in Lightroom it may be that you accidentally re-imported the images. If you can confirm that the original images are on your external drive, safe. I would delete all the images out of Lightroom and re-import them. Just be certain that you’re not deleting the original raw images. You’re just erasing the images from Lightroom classic. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    @@TheVisualCenter so I think when I was importing I didn’t see that the settings were to be imported to the Computer(this had to be changed to External). Once I exported I chose external, but the originals would go to the Computer. So there was no way to locate the originals in my external because they were in the Computer, which is why every time I would click on the Ircat LRC folder it would open but it had the exclamation mark. Luckily I always finished the work before deleting storage from my computer, otherwise I would be in deep trouble. All the edited pictures are saved in my External. What I did just now was switch the import setting, which is now setup to External, and now I can see CR3 files in my external(unedited pictures) and then once I Export to my external I can see the JPEG edited pictures. This is the right way correct?

  • @TheVisualCenter

    It sounds like it. It can be difficult to describe and visualize. If it’s working for you then great! Just be sure to backup your files with an additional drive… if not more.

    If you're trying to use the 'Add' button on the import page be sure that your RAW images are already copied to your computer. 'Add' only adds the images to the Lightroom catalog, it does not copy RAW images onto your hard drive. Does this help? If you need further assistance please let us know.
