important lessons learned after 3 months of youtube

In this video, I talk through key learnings since starting a KZread channel about 3 months ago; they are ordered in the way that I learned them. It’s crazy how quick these 3 months have gone by after what seemed like forever to first get started with my channel. I can say that the absolute hardest part of KZread so far was actually starting.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a channel, stop waiting and just go for it. That overwhelming feeling you get when starting something new fades pretty quick once you start. Take it one thing at a time, don’t compare yourself to other people, and focus on getting a little better each time. You got this! 🤙

I’m a new channel too! I like your style! I definitely got distracted by how one of my videos has 10k views but the rest have next to none… but I figure I’ll keep trying to figure this thing out. I’m enjoying the journey. Good times!

Thank you! Yes, that can really be distracting, especially at the start. Something else that has really helped me if a video is not getting many views - besides the content itself - is experimenting with different thumbnails and titles for the video. A concise title (avoiding the ... by staying under around 60 characters) and a clear thumbnail goes a long way from my experience so far.

Anytime! I'm glad the tips were helpful for you. Starting is the definitely the hardest part. Honestly, it's so important to just look at it one thing at a time because looking at everything you have to learn is overwhelming (speaking from my experience getting started). So just take it piece by piece and you will be so surprised after a month or two how much you'll learn if you stick with it. Keep track of things to learn how to do/make better. You got this!! 😎

I`ve been consistently uploading to KZread for more than a year now and I made a few videos on my journey and what I learned along the way. I agree with your insights, I`m at a point where I`m still experimenting with different topics and editing styles but starting to realize the platform could be the perfect medium to express my purpose, so... my advice: be persistent! 😉

Thanks for sharing! Totally agree with your insights of being persistent and to express your purpose. We can learn a lot from one another on here, and it's nice to connect and share our experiences and learnings along the way. Been working on persistence and balance to avoid burnout. Knowing when to step away from video editing, put down the phone and stop checking KZread studio, setting specific times to respond to questions/comments, and/or just take a break in general has really helped so far.

This randomly popped up, I watched, I liked and subbed. I particularly like your relaxed natural manner. Pretty stuck with my main channel rn, it's fairly easy to come up with entertaining shorts but the long form is much harder. I gave up drinking 8 years ago thankfully.

Appreciate the support! As for the long form content, and I’m still new so take this advice with that in mind, I would think of topics and speak to what you’re interested in. After looking at your channel (idk if that’s your main one or not) it seems like you’re interested and passionate about AI. For example, you could talk about trending AI topics, news, videos, etc., that you find interesting. Provide your perspective and spark a discussion in the chat with potential viewers to get their views as well. You could also ask viewers what AI tech they find interesting to give you more content you could speak to in future videos. I typically keep a note of topic ideas on my iPhone, and whenever I think of something (good or bad) I write it down with a few bullet points of topics to hit on and see if I can turn it into something later. Just getting the ideas out as they come has really helped. I hope that helps!

That’s a big one man. I’ve listened to a lot of bigger KZreadrs recently talk about similar things to that. Some that started by his/her self, but then hired a team of people for script writing, to post more content more often, do their video editing, etc. Eventually it scaled in a way where they woke up hating what they were doing. It’s super interesting to hear about all the different experiences/pathways of KZreadrs big, small, and everyone in between.

Good points, youtube is a strange beast, it was a video hosting site but it has morphed into a weird flavor of social media where you are expected to have a "brand". Been here since 2007, originally made biking videos, then automotive/240sx videos, and now van/travel vids😅 I have been casually uploading again for a year or so and have had a similar experience, 2 car videos "blowing up" just a quick walk around and drive of my beater subaru forester and an unintentional ASMR wheel bearing job on a PT cruiser (went ASMR because I couldn't talk to the camera😅) It feels like youtube/algorithm is like "yeah we get you are all into this van and woods stuff now but how about ASMR repair videos or car reviews??" Those 2 videos have more views than all of my other 50 van videos put together, both pull in views everyday from all around the world and through external sources, where as my other videos get a coupe views a month... but I'm still like nope! haha I am a burnt out mechanic who truly doesn't like most cars or the scene (especially subarus) and doesn't like people watching me work, so van/travel vids it is 😁 Good luck with the channel, minimalism is a good topic I have been dabbling in lately, lots made by and for women about purging kids toys and clothes but not many geared for dudes

I like how you phrased that because it is indeed a strange beast. And I appreciate that, that's a unique perspective especially for the amount of time you've been using KZread. 😆 Hey, well good for you for saying "nope!" That seems like the only way to make it last, is to post things you actually WANT and LIKE to post about. Not just to satisfy the algorithm. A follow up question for you that I'd be curious to hear your perspective on (since you have been doing KZread for a long time) is: why do you still do KZread? What value does it bring to your life? And thank you, much appreciated. There is so much under the minimalism category (housing, furniture, clothes, money, etc). I love talking about it because it's really helped me focus on things that matter and stop focusing on things that don't. Especially in the fucked up world we live in today where you advertised to nonstop, and not only that but everything is extremely personalized to you (which makes it even harder). One guy that really inspires me in that topic is Matt D'Avella; I recommend checking him out if you're into minimalism.

@@flonought You nailed it, you have to be genuinely into it, or you will lose steam. The viewers can pick up on it as well. Always enjoyed photography/making videos/editing and love the non fiction, raw, real, feel of youtube (less so these days) it quickly became my most consumed medium so it was a natural progression into creating and uploading, hopefully to contribute positively to something I have enjoyed so much. Left and came back for different reasons over the years, started the biking videos way back for fun and memories, but then around 2014 the copyright crackdown happened and all my vids with music now had no audio and traffic went to zero.. bummed out I deleted and planned to reupload with different music, but just never did... Came back when I started doing a bunch of work on my 240, put out a few vids but my workspace was small and poorly lit so it was hard to get the quality that was needed to be competitive around those days (2016ish) cameras, HD storage, and lighting upgrades were expensive and meant less car parts so I got discouraged and decided to just work on the car for myself with no camera and enjoy it, had barely anytime due to work, needed to focus on life, relationships, career etc. etc. This time, like a lot of folks, the last few years really showed me you cant plan for anything as much as we like too. Bought a van to camperize and told myself I need to film what I do to it whether I post it or not. After awhile it felt kind of crazy to keep filming and not post😅so just went for it. Your passion for minimalism shows and we definitely need more of that, consumerism is absolutely out of control and like you say the new powerful personalized advertising is not good, online shopping taking over, its all a disaster. I will check out Matts channel for sure. I am currently trying to cut my possessions down to the bare essentials and move across the country, as the time passes I realize how little I really need and how much stuff I have that was needlessly taking up not only physical space, but mental space as well. The minimalism tubers put my mind at ease while trying to decide what to keep/sell/dontate/toss. Thanks for lending an ear!

@@alwaysgoodinthewoods I didn’t even think about the whole pre-copyright crackdown era, that is interesting. And as for the camera gear vs. car parts, financially speaking, I totally get that. That’s definitely a good point because you don’t want to spend everything you have on equipment and parts, unless you have the money and/or are truly buying them for yourself and not for potential views/subs. 😆 that is for damn sure, the ‘can’t plan for everything’ has been a hard learning these past few years but also a good wake up call I think we all needed. Well I’m glad you went for it, that’s the right mindset. What have you got to lose? You’ll learn some new skills along the way, connect with people with shared interests, and have all of those life memories to be able to look back on. I love to hear that mindset! Gets me stoked just talking about it. I’m currently trying to do the same. My goal is to move out of state hopefully towards the later half of this year. I’ve lived in STL my whole life and I’m looking to move to Seattle, WA with nothing more than a carry on, my camera backpack, and my car. Then after that, who knows (and that’s the exciting part!). I wish you nothing but the best/safe travels in your journey man! And what you said is spot on about those things not just taking up physical space around you, but more importantly taking up mental space. It takes some self-reflection to come to that realization but once you realize it, it’s much easier to not to fall into that trap of buying shit you don’t need. Absolutely, you’re welcome. I really appreciate your insights. I watched a couple of your videos and you seem like a very down-to-earth guy, and I hope you keep doing KZread to continue sharing your journey!

😆 I feel that for sure. I looked into DaVinci Resolve but for me it was too intimidating for a starting editor; my buddy actually uses it and loves it, so maybe I'll eventually give it a try. I have a MacBook Pro and I found Final Cut Pro to be super straightforward and more beginner user friendly, once you get used to the magnetic timeline. Looks like you're learning a lot with DaVinci. Your editing and videos are looking good! Definitely shows that you're learning, especially with a couple getting over 1K views and you already have over 100 subs. Keep up the awesome work man!

I feel that for sure! And I like that term, I haven’t heard that before. And hey, do it for you. Don’t get caught up in niche-ing down, especially in the beginning, because that can really prevent you front getting started and just creating to create. Talk about what you like, and you may end up narrowing it down naturally after making some videos, finding out more about what you want to talk about consistently, and/or getting feedback from people who watch/listen in. Do you want to do faceless KZread or are you working up to being in front of the camera?

@@aprasharma1 you’re welcome! Every time you do it I’m sure you’ll get a littler better. And for good practice, record yourself talking on camera and get used to seeing yourself.
