    1-A lot of expressions today. If you ask me, I love writing sentences on different patterns. I wish, if only I had the access of your channel when I was a student. 2-If you don't mind asking me, how much is it a cheapest hotel in your city. if nothing else, I can talk on this with my friends. 3-If given the choice, I'd like to have a trip of USA once in my life. And thanks a lot for choosing my example.

    Yes, I loaded this lesson with useful expressions. :) Hopefully, you'll gain enough practice if you follow me here and on social media. I just shared a short task on Facebook and then on Twitter. Corrections/suggestions: 1- If you ask me, I love writing sentences with different patterns. If only I had had access to your channel when I was a student. 2- If you don't mind me asking, how much is the cheapest hotel in your city. If nothing else, I'll ask my friends what they think. (This suggests that one option is to ask your friends about hotel prices, though it's not the ideal option. But I think we can come up with another situation for "if nothing else." Take a look at some other examples being posted. Okay?) 3- If given the choice to travel abroad, I'd like to have a trip to the US once in my life.

    Hi teacher, how are you? *This morning I went for a walk with my dog. If nothing else, the sun was shining upon us, so we had a great time together! Bonus task: As I see it "if only" is used to talk about regrets and wishes either from the past or the present. *My daughter tried to make an apple cake yesterday. If only she hadn't forgotten it in the oven. What a pity! Great lesson as always. Thanks a lot!🌸

    Hi Claire. Ha ha. That's a funny example. Is it true? I've burnt thing in the oven before, so I can understand. :) You're correct in your understanding of "if only." Nice explanation! In the example with "if nothing else," you need to help me understand how the situation was negative to begin with. Maybe it was muddy from the rain yesterday, and you got all dirty. Suggestion: This morning I went for a walk with my dog. We got all muddy because the ground was still wet from yesterday's rain. If nothing else, the sun was shining upon us, so we had a great time together! Does that make sense? Thanks for sharing.

To be honest, I didn't exactly understand how to use "if nothing else". Should there be two clauses, one negative and other with a positive side? I'm a bit confused. Hi Claire. "If nothing else" is the IF-clause of your conditional. It's just not a full clause. The full clause is implied. But basically, you still have the IF-clause and a result: If nothing else, the sun was shining upon us. One way to think of it is: If there was nothing else that was positive, at least the sun was shining upon us. Take a look at some other examples. Susana Blanco and Shaji George posted some good ones.

    Hi Jennifer. Another great video from a fabulous teacher.😀 Here's my answer to the task: (if nothing else) • After breaking up with his girlfriend, he told her that he hoped she and him would be, if nothing else, just friends. Bonus task: (a) If only we had booked the tour in advance. ➡ In this sentence, they are wishing to change something that has already happened, which is booking the tour in advance, but they can't because they didn't book the tour in advance. (b) If only they had two more tickets. What bad luck! ➡ In this sentence, they wish that they have two more tickets, but they don't. (A wish for the present)

    Thanks ma'am, Homework task: I didn't get the required score when I had taken the IELTS test for the first time. Positively, if nothing else, It has given me an enthusiastic desire to learn English. (Is this kind of situation?) Bonus task: "If only" is similar to "wish"...Something we wished would have happened or wish happen, but at the moment it's impossible. For example: If only I had followed JenniferESL a few years earlier, I would have become more articulate in English than actually I'm.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Vijay. You have the right idea for "if nothing else." You look at a less than positive situation or a less than perfect person, and you try to focus on one positive thing. I suggest this version: I didn't get the required score when I took the IELTS test for the first time. But if nothing else, it made me more determined to learn English. I like that you compared "if only" to "wish." Indeed, you feel regret that you can't change a situation. The only correction to make in your example is to use the full form instead of the contraction: ...than actually I am/ ...than I actually I am. Great job!

    Thanks Jennifer ma'am. I have written present perfect and past simple tense because I have watched a video (maybe yours or I don't Anglo link) and it teaches that if two things happen at the same time, we can use past simple in both sentence..However, here, I have mentioned one past perfect and one past simple because I had taken the IELTS test first (first action) and its score I got after 13 days(second) that's why I didn't use past simple in both tenses.

  • @mvijay453

    @mvijay453

    Here I have used : It has given me an enthusiastic desire to learn English.. Because I have learnt from you that we can use present perfect tense when something has happened and its effect is still on us. So I still have an enthusiastic desire to learn English; therefore, I wrote present perfect instead of past simple .. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you very much for your correction and making us more determined to learn English and helping us ..

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    1. You can use the present perfect if you wish to say that past experience still affects your desire today: It has given me an enthusiastic desire to learn English. 2. Some people use the past perfect to clarify which of two events took place first, but with adverb clauses of time (with "when, after, before...") you can use the simple past with both because the timeline is clear. I didn't get the required score when I took the IELTS test for the first time.

    Homework task: "If nothing else", example: Last week I visited the restaurant that you recommended me, the food was terrible. If nothing else,the manager was very polite. Bonus task: How do you understand the full result in the following statements? 1.- If only I had booked the tour in advance....... ( I wouldn't have missed the opportunity to travel) 2.- If only they had two tickets. What bad luck!.........( I would go with you to our favourite concert) Both statements stablish that only in case that the condition is accomplished a probable result will happen in the future or would have happened in the past

    Hi Susana.Thanks for doing the task. I like the example. You logically describe a disappointing situation and try to emphasize the one positive thing you can say. Usually we recommend something to someone. I wouldn't drop "to." Corrections: Last week I visited the restaurant that you recommended. The food was terrible. But if nothing else, the manager was very polite. You're right to use the unreal results with "if only." The focus has to be on outcomes we want, but can't have. It's all about regret. I like your suggestions for the results.

    "If possible" is used in the affirmative. Don't make it negative with "not." I'd simply say: I went to the Sahara desert to work, but there was only sand as far as my eyes could see. You can use "if possible" to mean "if it is possible." If possible, let's take a large supply of water with us.

    Hello mam you have shared these example written by students as their homework task. Ex: 1:You can use the emergency exist,if necessary. 2: Please call me back in ten minutes ,if possible. Mam ,If I am not mistaken , shouldn't comma be removed before if necessary or if possible as we don't use comma before subordinate clause. I asked you because you always correct punctuation marks but this time you didn't.

    I don't consider that a significant mistake. It's probably better without, but some writers may insert a comma before the phrase. However, I feel the comma is absolutely necessary in the initial position: If necessary, you can use the emergency exit. If possible, please call me back in ten minutes.

    Bonus task: If only has the same meaning and usage as "I wish". It is used to express regrets. 1) If only we had booked the tour in advance. We regrets that we did not book for the tour in advance. 2) If only they had two more tickets what bad luck! We regret they dont have two more ticket .

    Ha ha. I'm happy there's no need to subscribe since you're already subscribed! :) It would be clearer to write: I am enjoying your videos, so I have already subscribed to your channel. If I weren't enjoying them, I wouldn't have subscribed. "If not" is particularly clear when it follows a yes-no question: Have you subscribed? If not, please do so. Does that make sense?

    We learn that "if" is not not only used as a subordinate conjunction. It can be a conditional in a phrase, too. We see the comma coming before "if' when we use it this way: I would study more, if anything. It was a struggle, if anything. We must get up and move around, if nothing else. You should try reading more, if nothing else. How much did that airfare cost by the way? Only kidding - You don't have to answer that!

    Technically we should use "and" or separate the two imperatives: Come and see me tomorrow. / Come. See me tomorrow. But in spoken English, it's heard as one request: come see me. If you Google "come see me" or "come see for yourself," you'll see many uses especially in fiction where there's dialog.

    There are a few countries in the world where you find native English speakers. USA is one of them . If nothing else , they speak English very fast . I can't be sure about there grammar skills in spoken everyday English . BTW, we indians are very much familiar with British English. I came to know about American English through Hollywood movies . Before you met online, my notion about Americans was , they have been murdering English language in a uncivilized manner . Rather I found Americans less cultured in there language skills . But now I have changed my opinion because of you. But still , I think , British English as a mother , while American English an Aunt

    Hello! I love your comment. :) It makes me happy to know that you've taken the time to give me a chance and that you've actually started to change your mind about Americans, at least some of us. Ha ha. You used "if nothing else" correctly! It captures your earlier view that there's not much to say about American English that's positive. Hopefully, each video of mine will give you something positive! Corrections: The USA is one of them. / I can't be sure about their grammar.../ we Indians/ Before I met Americans online, I had the notion that they have been.../ in their language skills/ (no need to put a space before a period).

    Homework task: I had a new job as a customer service agent. If nothing else, I had a higher salary. Bonus task: How do you understand the full result in the following statements? A) If only we had booked the tour on advance. In this sentence we regret that we didn't book the tour before so the results could have been better. B) If only they had two more tickets. What bad luck! In this sentence no more tickets remain all of the tickets have been sold so we couldn't buy any ticket

    Super job! You understand "if only" very well. I like the example you created. I might suggest a small change to create a clearer situation: I got a job as a customer service agent. If nothing else, I had a higher salary. OR you could write a small detail like this: I had a job as a customer service agent, which wasn't very interesting. If nothing else, I had a higher salary than the previous job.
