when you wrote j’ai mangeais in imparfait i got confused because my french teacher told us that in imparfait, you drop the -er and replace it with is conjugation. In this case -ais. so would j’ai mangais also be correct or no.

Merci Pascal, c'est un peu plus clair. Je dirais "I was leaving when you were arriving" plutôt que "I left when you arrived" pour dire "je partais quand tu arrivais", qu'en pensez-vous ?

For me : « Je suis parti quand tu es arrivé “ >> « I left when you arrived “ >> passé composé . But for the imparfait , the sentence should be « je partais quand tu es arrivé « >> I was leaving when you arrived .
