impact wrench hog ring vs pin detent (dewalt)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
If you are wondering which to get and are new to this the easiest way is if you only need one socket and never need to change sizes , get a pin detent, if you need to change sizes a lot like working on your car get the hogring, if you like to change sockets easily without pulling on the socket very hard BUT still want a little bit of retention for the socket get the detent and grind the pin down, if you don't care about any retention and just like the socket to be lose so it falls off easy get either and remove the pin or the hogring.
. Part 2: • Part 2: impact wrench ...
Here is a hog-ring anvil or "friction ring" on the dewalt dcf899HB . It is a c-clip over a rubber o-ring on the end of the anvil.
When you push the socket on, the clip gets compressed and grips the inside of the socket. As you put more use on your impact, the ring will wear and provide less friction, you will then need to replace the clip.
The good thing about the friction ring is you can put the socket on any orientation. You do not have to line up the hole in the socket. You don't have to think about it. The bad thing is, when the ring is new, it is quite hard on your shoulder having to struggle to pull off the socket. If you need to make many socket changes, it is slow and hard on your shoulder.
The dewalt dcf899B (or dcf899p1 kit) pin detent anvil. The pin is tapered and allows you to push the socket on and with
some effort you can pull the socket off. The advantage of this type of pin is you can put the socket on without aligning the pin, this allows you to pull the socket off with ease, using your fingers.
This is useful especially if you need to change between multiple sockets, you don't have to struggle to pull them off.
But if you do want to lock the socket on securely, you can align the hole with the pin and it takes a bit of effort to remove. Or you could stick a screwdriver or something to push the pin down
I really like the pin on the ryobi P260, it is a little more low profile and provides just enough resistance not to lock the socket on. I'm going to remove the dewalt pin and grind it to see if I can get it like the Ryobi as I don't need the pin to be so secure.
I think maybe the hog ring anvil may be stronger because it is not drilled in 2 places to fit the pin detent(but not sure just a guess)
I'm not sure how the pin looks on the milwaukee cordless impacts, like a 2762-22 , if it is tapered or straight. If it is straight then you would need a tool to push it down even to put on the socket. But when I look at the picture on milwaukee tool site it looks tapered.

My friggin desalt wouldn’t let go of my sockets, very frustrating sick of fighting with it, you’ve saved me any aggravation in the future, thanks from Canada.
Wonderfully demonstrated. I really appreciate that you take the time to show multiple times. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for this. Nice to know I’m not the only one! I’ve had neck pain all day from pulling on the Milwaukee “Shockwave” socket stuck in my Milwaukee impact ratchet. It lives up to its name, sending shocks up my arm to my sore neck. Geez...
5:12 LOL! Haven't we all had those moments: oh shit...
5:13 Gave me 1911 disassembly flashbacks
Thanks! I was wondering why my 1/2 inch sockets weren’t fitting my new impact air gun. Makes a lot more sense now that the gun is so new.
Gracias a este video, preferí comprar mi DCF899 con "pin" y hasta el momento me parece perfecta. Saludos!

Con pin es más fácil de que se rompa
thank you for explaining the differance
Thanks for explaining. I thought it was something I was doing that caused difficulty getting sockets off my hog ring,
Sweet! Thanks for showing us how you remember the detent pin 👍🏾
Thank you for explaining the difference. It was VERY helpful. BtW, I love the colorful metaphor at the end.
Best explanation of the hog ring I’ve seen on KZread. Thanks!
Thanks man, i was wondering about the difference between Detent vs Ring, i love Detent, i'll go with it ;)
Just got the Hog Ring Anvil its about 30 Dollars more the Detent Anvil but is easier to change multiple Sockets. Thank you for your comparing the two.
I try to avoid the pin detent impacts because to set the pin up they have to drill a hole in the Anvil and it creates a weak spot I’ve had one break straight through they can (not always) snap like a carrot the hog ring design is stronger
Great vid that doemonstrates all the points about usability that I was looking to understand. Thank you...now I can spend my money!!
Cool. I put a tiny drop of silicone to lubricate the hog ring to make it less sticky. Or, use a 1" long impact extension with ball detent...this will cause some torque loss, but might be worth the trade-off in some cases.
This answers a question I have had for a while. Thanks. - jwrit
Now I know, which I had no idea before, thanks
Great video. I'm about to buy a new DeWalt and this helps me make the choice. BTW, I knew that the pin was gonna fly out when you pulled out the drift... Tried to warn you!
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Thanks for making this video. Showed me the difference between this and a detent, and I also discovered by you holding that 899 how big that freaking thing is lol...going to get a 889 now as I am just doing some odd stuff to cars around the house and not a professional mechanic. Thumbs up.
Very well done, with good close-ups that were in focus. Bravo and thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. It has answered all my questions. Why in the heck would anyone give this a thumbs down haha!
If you pull the socket while engaging the motor the hammering vibrations will help it release.

Sounds like niko from gta 4 great video by the way
being older and a tad weaker i cheat by positioning my thumb on the nose of the tool and it helps to apply pressure to pop off the socket. some sockets have a hole that a small screw driver fits to give leverage to pop socket off.
Seems like the hog ring is a lot easier to work with unless you are in a factory setting. The TTI built Ryobi pin detent seemed much more user friendly. A nail or thin punch would likely be a good tool to have handy with a DeWalt pin detent. Good vid!

If the hog ring binds you either wish you bought a pin detent or use the same size socket for ever
Thank You for the video brother. May the Most High God Bless you
That was very informative you made me laugh at the end and I hope you managed to get it fixed
I am currently struggling with a new hog ring. I found this video haha.
Thanks for the explanation. I will be getting the hog ring version. Right now the hog ring version of Dewalt dcf891 is $30 cheaper in Canada

I felt that when it flew off and you went "oh shit!" 💀💀💀
Great information. Thank You!
I can’t believe you found it!!
Thanks. great demo
the milwaukee 2860 has a pin detent and it has the same problem the socket locks because the pin sticks out 1/8 of an inch I had to grind it down
Great Video!! Regrettably I bought DeWalt hog ring because it was on sale T_T, I wish I watch your video before buying!!
at 5:13 ... "oh $hit..." just like me in when working on things, lol
I read that the Dewalt’s pin is their weakness and quite a few have broken. Might go with the more robust hog ring myself.
oh Man what a great video this guy deserves award for the honesty at the end!!!
I got a socket stuck on my 1/2 impact how would I remove it
Thank you for the vid!
which one is better hog ring or pin detent?? help please
Thanks! Great video
Hello that if possible to make a hole in the square 1/2 thank you
Like others, I'm purchasing an impact wrench and wanted to know the difference between hog ring and detent pin.
So lucky you found that. A good example of the difference in those two types. Oh..... Lol
Thanks for the helpful video. However, in the video you used the pin in the wrong way so you need to push it from the socket's hole with a screwdriver or something else and the socket will be free like you explained in the description.
I have a dewalt DCF899N with the detent pin. After a few years I now need to use a screwdriver to wedge sockets off. It's VERY annoying.
so with detent pin you can use socket without hole also
I have never used an impact wrench. Today I bought a new one and It is a friction anvil. Anyway, I replaced the radiator in my car today but didn't use my impact because I didn't know you had to push so hard to get the socket on the new tool and I thought it was a defect so I gave up. Had no Idea they are that hard at first. I am going right now to see if I can get a socket on. Thanks!

Good job 👍👍👍
Pin indent is bettet you can use it two ways if you eant the ratchet to stay on so it doesn't fall off then line it up with the hole if you want it to slip on and off easy don't line it up with hole but with hogring it's hard to put on and take off
Thank you very much.
How do you replace that tip or ring when it wears out?
Good information here! However this video makes the top of my shoulder hurt. 😅
5:13... don't DO IT !!! Don't Do IT ! ! ! heh
excellent thank you.
hahahaha, saw it coming, and heard the "oh shit!"
Can the tool use smaller sockets?? Bits??
Sergei the Meerkat does voiceover 👍😊
GREAT ASS VIDEO THUMBS UP!!!!!👍🏼
I would like the new Dewalt impact . this one does not have the detent pin anvil
Thank you!
Hog ring all day! Speed and repairability.
Put a bit of grease, or even WD-40 on your hog ring or pin. It will be easier on and off, hold just as well, and last much longer.
Hog ring can be annoying to get a bit ON the tool but I'll take that any day over a stupid detent pin. With a detent you have to be Hercules to get a socket OFF the tool.

@@singlecams Actually, in some cases, it IS true. My brand new Milwaukee was very hard to remove, when the pin was aligned. But, all you have to do, is push the pin in with a small probe, to remove the socket. Just an extra step.
@MrCaribe65

Push a probe or small screw driver through the hole in the socket, to depress the pin. The socket will slide right off.
Overview liked.

+Юрий Бибенин thank you :)
It's not in a straight line when you pull it holding by the handle. It works better holding by the barrel with socket facing towards you
The hole in the base of the socket is to allow you to use a small pin to insert into the hole to release the pin, so no need to struggle to get the socket off as you were doing !
Is some play in the anvil normal?
Thank you
I honestly kind of wish I had gotten a pin detent on my newest impact, because I don't use it A TON and I can tell the hog ring is going to take some time to break in because I was fighting really hard with sockets both on and off. At one point I spent like 5 mins with a flat head trying to pry off a socket. I ended up using a short extension to make things easier but couldn't fit it in anywhere and kinda ruined the point of a compact impact.

+Roland Jones i took out the pin and ground it with a file, just a little off the top and now the socket comes off with one pull. I will upload video works perfect now. But if you need socket to stay on for good then best not to grind it and use a tool like you say.
Thank you. I thought I purchased the wrong socket for my impact that has hog ring.

Nice, thanks.

After watching you do somewhere around 437 attach-and-remove cycles, I got it how they work; You didn't need to continue all the way to 1000. ;) But very helpful video just the same; thanks for clearing it up so I know which type to buy.
Thanks!
I knew that spring would do it's job. Lmao!
i saw that "oh shit" coming at the end...lol
One frequent problem with the hog ring design is the impacting action pulling the socket off the chuck.
