I wish I could hear this for the first time again. I used to take my friend's car on short midnight drives and listen to new underground releases on local radio. I love this song because it has a very haunting feel to it in my opinion, it's like a hug from someone who's not there. I guess the best way to describe it is when you trace your fingers over certain parts of your body and you get this tingling feeling all over your body. Its like that, but for 4 minutes and 26 seconds.

If this woman never did anything else in her life than create this song, she's earned her wings.

I think it's a vocoder. My keyboard has one, where you can plug a mic into it and then play chords on the keyboard while you sing, and it'll take the "sounds" of your mouth and fit them to the notes you're playing.

She managed to make a song with almost zero musical backing entertaining and deeply emotional. You need an impressive understanding of melody to be able to do this. Listening to this song today reminds me of the person I once was but now is little more than a fading memory. I miss myself.

this song honestly helped me realize there was something not right in my head, and at a very young age. I was about 10 or 11 when I first heard it at a dance competition. I couldn’t even pay attention to the dancers or the stage. I just sat with my jaw dropped listening to this masterpiece. I felt her pain, her words really etched out my own pain that was lying dormant. I told my mother that I was always sad so she took me to the doctor. by the time I was 13, i was diagnosed with anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and ptsd. I don’t know if I would have gotten the help I needed if I never heard this song. I have to take medication basically for the rest of my life, but at least I caught it when I did. 15 years later, I graduate tomorrow with a degree in Sound Recording Technology. we’ve watched so many videos with her in them. she’s an absolute legend for her contributions to music and is criminally underrated. thank you for everything Imogen

We actually do, she says it after every “Whatcha say” as it is a question every time. What they say is the following: “We only meant well.” “It’s all the for the best.” “It’s just what we need.” This is Imogen talking about what her parents were telling her during their divorce. It’s a very conflicting thing and is so touching, the parents want the best for them and their child, but they can’t have it both ways, either it’s what they need, or what she needs. And they decide it, hence “”It’s just what we need.” You decided this.”.

Memes aside, Ms. Heap is one of the most talented and underappreciated artists of this era. Her influence is extraordinary. This song is hauntingly beautiful. I cannot stop listening to it 20 years later.

I imagine the moment of this creation will be a core memory for AI. Something about singing through digital instruments and giving them a vocabulary and a voice seems like an act of love.

i think it's because the mmm whatcha say part is fueled by anger in terms of the narrative of the song. it's the most aggressive part of the song and the lyrics themselves are what you'd typically hear in an argument fueled by anger and sarcasm. like before this part she doesn't understand why what's happening to her but is blindly accepting it. but the mmm whatcha say part is a turning point in her thinking and she's questioning her situation. and it ends so quietly as it seems that she knows that she doesn't have a choice but to accept her situation. at least that's what i think.

Usually that part is called the bridge. It’s slightly different from the rest of the song, but it ties the message of the song together. Many songs have bridges, you just have to listen to the slight change in tune and beat.
