Enzymes linked to antibody can convert any chromogen substrate into coloured product whether antigen is present or not.. but is it so that enzyme linked to antibody becomes activated only when it binds with antigen?

In my opinion, as long as enzyme is present adding substrate leads to color formation. To avoid this false results several washing steps are observed to ensure that un bound enzyme linked are eliminated. Thanks
