Immortals of Aveum - the BEST thing about it
Ойындар
Immortals of Aveum (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S) is a fun, flawed adventure that is worth your time...at some point. Let's talk about why short and simple games are good sometimes.

New Order isn't even old... But these days it does make sense that outside of established franchises it's more the realm of AA than AAA, and that isn't a bad thing AA generally takes more risks
You're right that it's a good, old fashioned, old school style game. Same reason I loved Evil West. But Immortals of Aveum asking $70 for a 15-20 hour campaign with minimal to no replay value? That's just not a solid value proposition for me. Had this launched at a $50 price point, I probably would have bought it day one. Now I've got it on my wait for sale list.
Huge shoutout to Jake and Andrew from a long time lurker. Thanks for keeping me entertained with the because video games podcast whilst I wash up/grind collectibles/cry about life. Love to you both ❤
Jake, I truly love how you champion a lot of games. Always get the feeling like you have compassion for the people working hard behind the games. The unsung heroes whose names we'll never know but whose work keep us entertained for hours and help give us an outlet for our stress. You're a good man, Charlie Brown. Keep that shit up.
Games like this, Atlas Fallen, Evil West, and High on life are super refreshing to me.

tbf as a huge weeb, Ghostwire Tokyo seemed like THE GAME to me, and going around Shibuya, using Tengu as grappling hooks and fighting Visitors and Yokai feels good, but it's also a game where there's nothing really happening. Like seriously, at least Far Cry games have enemies showing up and disrupting your travels but at least in the first hours of Ghostwire, nothing happens, you see some Visitors here and there, you pet some dogs and talk to cats, some really really simple sidequests...don't know, IoA has a waaaay better opening compared to Ghostwire imo.

I just picked this up on PS+ and loved the heck out of it. At first the weird modern dialog was off-puting, but after a while, I got used to it and a lot of the jokes landed really well! What I realized about 3/4 through, is that the writing and vibe was trying to revive those mid-90's Saturday morning cartoons. All of the characters had that snappy, snarky dialog. But yeah it was great. I applauded at the end, because I was not expecting anything from it, but it really pleasantly surprised me.
We need more of these. I want these single player, short, AA even titles.
I'm glad we get cameos from your dog now!
Definitely interested to try out this game on a sale or something cause the way you describe it, it feels the need to be given a shot for sure!! Also your dog is so cute💝
Yay, a Jake video!
I was cautious about this game, but between yours and Ralph's coverage on this game, I'm happy where it's landed. New IPs unburdened by Battle Passes and MTXs are always a fresh of breath air. Even though I'm not itching to play it just right now, I'm looking forward to trying it down the road!

@@capnphuktard5445 Thanks for the suggestion! I have, and my thoughts haven't changed - I'll still be picking this up down the road, but it won't be any time soon and certainly not at full price.
This game is in my backlog once I'm through the bigger releases. I think you hit the nail on the head comparing this to games from the early 2000's there were a ton of smaller non AAA gam s existed and they were fun. My buddys and I called them "6ers" meaning they are probably rated between 6-7 out of 10 but they were still fun even with their flaws. I wish those would come back. I'm wondering with Atlas Fallen and This one we're seeing a resurgence of A/AA games. Thanks for the opinion I will be checking it out...albeit after some of the larger releases.
Just came to PS Plus and I am absolutely loving it! My kind of game! Combat is nice and challenging on immortal difficulty… exploration is rewarding with metroidvania elements going back with new abilities. I love the acting and story so far. I am so glad I have it a try. I had planned on waiting for a decent sale but PS Plus works too!!!
I haven’t played this game… but the way you described Darren’s character reminded me of Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet. Which honestly sounds fun.
New spot looking good!
My next "old fashioned" game will be Sea of Stars but I'll bet this ends up on ps+ and/or steeply discounted early next year

I am REALLY not an FPS guy, but when a shooter has a distinctly compelling single-player campaign that can hook me I always remember those games very fondly: Perfect Dark, Medal of Honor: Frontline, and of course the Metroid Prime series all come to mind. I also won't be checking this out immediately, but I have been getting more and more intrigued about it and if it can also fill that niche of FPS games that really resonate with me.
Dat lighting jakeyboiii
Thanks for the vid Jake will defo pick this up in a sale
Hey Jake, nice paint job on the walls!
I was cutting some fries while I watched this and it made me realize a video while you cooked could be cool after how good the painting one was.
It's definitely on my list along with evil west. Hopefully can snag them up during holiday sale.
This game is not my type of game but i decided to give it a try because it was free with my ps+ subscription. I was surprised when i started playing and i actually really like the game and am having alot of fun playing it. I'm not seeing all these flaws you speak of but i can see how some people might. Thanks for the video
Ayyy the new room is sick!
Solid take with some good points. Bought it to take a break from BG3 (wife was saying I was playing it too much) and I’ve really been enjoying immortals. It’s a decent game if you go into it knowing not to expect the world.
Jake dude, good work on the paint job
you're the man, Jake.
Love the mention of PS3/360 era, that's like a golden seal of approval at this point for me. I loved Evil West, despite it not being quite the game I'd hoped it would be (gameplay wise I expected more of a shooter). Oddly enough just confirmed a Cabin weekend with my usually "Game Crew" from back in the PS3/360 era, at which we'll be bringing out PS3s to play some often left out co-op titles like F.U.S.E., Motorstorm & Scott Pilgrim.
Played the demo today on Xbox, didn't expect much of it. Couple of hours later i drove to the city and bought the game 😃
I need to check this out! Reminds me of Heretic from back in the day!😊
To me, this is one of the most game pass type of games ever. For single player specifically. So until that happens, I think I'm content with baldurs gate, starfield, cyberpunk, armored core, and I'm probably forgetting something else
Jake, how the heck did you nail all three games I'm waiting for or currently trying to play!? That's freaky.
I will play it for sure. I was hopeful for this. My backlog is just beating me so badly I am not doing immediately.
I've been having a blast with it. Guess because i went into it with a low bar, but I'm having fun.
Today I read in the Jak & Daxter subreddit that this game resembles the J&D games a bit. Mostly lore parallels, so does anyone who played this game think that, gameplay wise, this game feels like a Jak game?
I love these types of games so I’ll have to try it out
Most of my favorite games are just singleplater fps story experiences, so im looking forward to picking this one up.
There’s enough for a sequel and I’d play it day one
Currently playing it on a graphic card that can barley play due to UE5 and still really enjoying it, when I upgrade towards the end of the year I will replay it to look at the extra eye candy.
Well, shit, Jake you need to do a video reminding us about this games in the week after Christmas. That’s when I can knock something like this down, while I’m trying to ignore my family
I’ll definitely check it out when the price drops a little. Maybe, hopefully I can squeeze it in between Armored Core and Spider-Man.
Another buy for me. There aren’t many single player drops that you enjoy that I haven’t had a good time with as well. Still putzing around the Wayfinders queue. 🙃 Skin looks healthy bro. ✨ Thanks for the drop.
I am enjoying the game. I agree with you on so many of the points you make. Thank you very Much 😎
This game is underrated! Also a huge fan of single player action adventure games here - and finally got to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is not as great as I expected. But this is epic! Maybe it's just because I haven't played Skyrim and this feels like Skyrim lite but for some relaxed shoot 'em up gameplay with magic, it's amazing!
I was on the fence, but I am LOVING this game. Fun factor is definitely high.
Sadly, I really can't play the game right now(even though I really want to), because I'm in vacation and my pc is at home, And when i try it even if I don't like it, i really really like the concept of an old school shooter without microtransactions and season pass.
Im really pleased with the game. I bought it because it looked like a nice deviation from bg3 which I sunk over 100 hours into at this point and it delivers. It looks good I like the world and design, the gameplay is super fun and I even like the lighthearted writing. It's just a nice story driven fun game and I'm there for it. Im not on good terms with EA at all but if they are putting out game ass Videogames like this one I vote with my wallet and support it. I'm still very sceptical about starfield and curious how this turns out but for now this and ac6 will keep me busy alongside bg3 till probably lords of the fallen. I mean have you seen the trailer for this one from the gamescom? Holy f it looks incredible. Have a good one Jake! Much love from Germany ❤
I got the Digital Deluxe Edition on sale for Xbox yesterday. I have not played the game yet. I will get around to it. I'm playing Redfall, Ghostwire Tokyo, Lies of P at the moment
just started it last night. palate cleanser between the massive heavy hitters this year.
Ah Jake I'm really glad you mentioned enslaved, just barely finished a playthorugh on that game after not having played it for 7 years and damn its amazing. Really wish we could get a sequel 😭 its back compat on xbox for 15$ and its well worth a playthrough, yes the gameplay is dated but everything else is just great
Ok, ok, but that cute doggo in the background tho! 😍
I will wait a couple of months to buy this game but I will buy it. As Jake said, we need these types of games. Had this been released a while ago, it would be a perfect middle of the road game that would be really fun to a lot of people. After Armoured Core, I will be buying it
speaking of short focused games, have you tried bomb rush cyberfunk yet jake? i think you'd love it.
Great vid
As an older gamer and love single player games. I’ll definitely pick this up near Xmas in the PlayStation store sales, to many titles coming, mortal kombat 1 I can’t wait cheers.
Adding to wishlist
Grabbed it on PS on sale, really enjoying it, right after Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2. Yeah, good solid game for its price but with discount. Btw, bought it purely on yours advice, so thanks for this channel. Keep up the good work!)
My girl who’s just getting into games has been looking for “video game ass video games.” Ones where you have straightforward gameplay that’s just fun. No need for too much depth when the surface is enjoyable for the times you’re in it. Thx for the pizza jake
Your dog is adorable!
Jak: “Together…we are the Immortals of Aveum!” *Crowd groans, followed with murmurs of disappointment.* Jak: “Erm, it sounded better in my head..”
I’m really enjoying the game so far (a lot more than I expected) the story is really interesting and the gameplay is smooth, feels like COD in a weird way and love it or hate it COD is what you should want your FPS to feel like. Just got to chapter 9 having a lot of fun with it
Didn't even notice his dog until the end lol
The fact you brought up Persona 5 as I load it up was fucking hilarious 😂😂😂
I actually really love this game, and I’m still having a great time 20+ hours in. The gameplay is very unique and to me almost feels like a magic based version of Doom Eternal when you start getting into the rhythm of the combat and having to vary your attacks based on enemy types. Plus, as a fan of Brandon Sanderson and his Cosmere series, I feel like the developers took a lot of inspiration from his novels in concepts and armor designs as well as humor. It’s a shame though that new IPs like this struggle to find an audience, since it’s just perpetuating developers to rehash old ideas and franchises because they’re more profitable. I’m hoping it gains a larger audience when it comes to Gamepass and PS Plus, because this franchise has a ton of potential.
This reminds me of that Battle Mage game that was on PlayStation 4
That dog! The look on that face.
Theres alot of these Magic casting Doctor Strange games nowadays forspoken, hogwarts legacy, ghostwire Tokyo ,atlas fallen and now immortals of aveum
It reminds me a bit of a Marvel, bioshock vibe.
I think it’s great. There’s not many good magic casting games that actually have speed. I did wanna play on my pc, but works fine on my PS5. It’s not a novel, it a Game.
That puppy was NOT having any of it! haha
I'm heading into Armored Core tomorrow. So i probably wont pick up this game for a bit. But appreciate the review of it. I'll definitely give it a shot. Atlas Fallen fell a bit flat to me unfortunately. My most anticipated game out there right now is Lords of the Fallen. Starfield i feel/hope will be good as a long play over months.
I like it because it proves that not everything needs to be an full on rpg open world I’m fatigued of open world. We need more linear games like this
I didn't like it at first..but after a few hours it really opens up and it is a freaking blast now..this game gives you a ton of combat options..I feel like a freaking merchant of death mage..wayyy better when you pump up the difficulty
I love how you said “we need these.” that really sums up why stuff like this is kinda important, in a way. it’s like the B movies of the 70s and 80s that we dont really get anymore. well said jake. well said.
