Immortal Technique: Kings in Hip-Hop Change With Each Era

Ойын-сауық

www.vladtv.com - Immortal Technique shared his thoughts on Star claiming that Eminem is the king of Hip-Hop, saying the title holder changes with each new era. The famed rapper and activist pointed out that not many people know who Tiberius is today, but the man was a Roman Emperor who many considered a god during his reign from 14 AD to 37 AD.
During the conversation Immortal Technique also debated whether Michael Jackson earned his "King of Pop" title, which he said was just a slick marketing ploy. At the end of the sit-down the "Dance With the Devil" emcee also spoke about the realities of being a king, and the gruesome nature that comes along with the territory.
Check out his full interview above.

Its really hard to watch Immortal Technique speak facts while Vlad behind the camera speak nothing but bullshit. For a man his age, you would think he would have said someone other than Chris Brown as being the King of R&B. That would be some teenage girl saying some stupid shit like that.

Jeff Nasty From The Pack What? Eminem came out in 99 so how in the world could he be king then? Stop it. At that time Hip Hop was pretty much searching for a king post Pac and Biggie era; but by the 2000's their is no way you couldn't call Jay king. Every single rapper wanted a feature or cameo from jay, to be acknowledged by him or to sign to the roc-a-fella. Regardless of Em sales and popularity Jay was the standard for top dog in hip hop ranks. If you were around in that time that topic would not be up for debate.

if we're using micheal jackson as an example of him being the king of pop we have to look at 1) album sales, 2) quality of music, 3) celebrity, 4) consistency 5)impact on culture.. i think its a toss up between TUPAC. EMINEM or JAYZ. FACTS

If you go based on those things then Kanye the king 1) album sales: every one of Kanye's solo albums has gone platinum 2) quality of music: thanks to his ability as a producer, Kanye is able to make music that is very technically good, this is supported by acclaim from music critics 3) celebrity: ...should I even have to say this one? Kanye is arguably the most famous rapper alive to the mainstream population. Whether or not it is aided by controversy, he is still known throughout the world and is practically a household name. 4) consistency: like I said, all of Kanye's solo albums have gone platinum, even if one were to say they don't think all of his albums have been good, not all of 2pac's albums were good, not all of Eminem's albums have been good, not all of Jay-z's albums have been good either 5) impact on culture: whether you love him, or hate him, Kanye's name stays in people's mouths. His wife's Twitter following alone counts for more than 10% of the people in all of the U.S....Kanye's fashion is emulated throughout the world and whenever he releases a product, being music or shoe, it is quickly consumed. Furthermore, for anybody saying he doesn't write all his own stuff...I'm not saying I agree but MJ didn't write all his own stuff either and is still considered the King of Pop

there are no kings in hip-hop, its all just hype. you ever notice how people become kings when their dead? sure they're the most popular when alive but its only when their dead that their status as king is solidified. its the companies and labels behind them that do this. the reason people want a king is because its being fed into their heads. "greatest of all time, classic records" and a whole bunch of other bull. lets see how many of these guys can last time like tech said. for example, although many people dont listen to him i doubt you wont find a person who hasnt heard of mozart or beethoven. famous composers of a genre that has faded from the limelight. or leonardo davinci and Michelangelo. lets see 200 or 400 years from now if people will be talking about tupac, biggie, and eminem. lets see if elvis is remembered as one of the greats much like mozart and beethoven. less than 100 years and people are already crowning kings. only your great great grandkids have that privilege. lets see if they remember what you do.

***** Ultimately yes this is the truth. People fail to realise that your "Kingship" is defined by how long the impact you made on the world is remembered and that in most cases it outweighs your catalogue. 2Pac made 6 albums, Biggie made 2, Jay Z made 12, Doug E Fresh made 1. They are all kings because they made an impact that redefined "mainstream" Hip Hop. The reality is that the quality of rap makes no difference, (The) Vanilla Ice is also a King whether we choose to accept it or not, he made a big enough impact worthy of the title

"Why can't there be a king of Hip-Hop...?" because music is a matter of opinion, it's a subjective thing. Nothing determines the king. The best selling artist might be trash - Vanilla Ice sold ALOT of music in the 90s. The Spice Girls sold alot of records. Record sales don't make you the king. So who decides? J Cole said it best... "Ain't gonna be no more kings Be wary of any man that claims Because deep down he clings onto the need for power The reality, he's a coward Ultimately he's scared to die And sometimes so am I But when I'm in tune with the most high I realize, the fear lies in my lack of awareness of the other side Today I know that we are the same, are the same, you and I Different kind of skin, different set of eyes Two different minds, but only one God (It's only one God nigga) It's for all the kings Cause I know deep down every poet just wanna be loved" - J Cole, Fire Squad

  • @bruceleeds7988

ToroidalVortexLove agree. However, I do think that record sales make you a "King" because that is what these titles are defined by, as well as successful promotional campaigns. The King Thing did start with MJ, then of course with Biggie, which people still don't understand the reference because most have not seen the movie King Of New York. It wasn't really a rap reference it was part of the Mafioso Rap alias trend. Then it got OTT with the King Of The South Debate. In my opinion there have only been two rap Kings worthy of the title: 50 Cent and Kendrick Lemar. 50 cause he came back after losing his first deal and being blackballed, and K-Dot because he won the public off skills alone undisputedly

  • @ToroidalVortexLove

The problem is, and no offence intended, but if teenage white girls who know nothing about Hip-Hop culture buy more records than real Hip-Hop heads does that mean Justin Bieber can be the King of Hip-Hop next year if he sells the most records? It's got to be about more than record sales or it leaves the culture open to culture vultures and cheesy pop stars.

ToroidalVortexLove if you can walk up to someone and say an artist music lyrics and fully expect the person to know them otherwise you would think their crazy, then that person is the most INFLUENTIAL artist of their genre. BEATLES(ROCK), MICHAEL JACKSON(POP), EMINEM(HIP-HOP), BEETHOVEN(CLASSICAL). their music has stood the test of time, and has transcended their own eras. why is this such a hard concept for people to accept?

  • @ToroidalVortexLove

    @ToroidalVortexLove

    9 жыл бұрын

ngpdreamteam2k4 because as I said, it's subjective opinion, some would say that the Beatles were more of a pop group than a rock group and put the Rolling Stones in the rock category, some would say Rock n Roll is part of the Rock category so Elvis takes the rock spot, some would say pop music is just "popular music" so Elvis and the Beatles are both bigger pop stars than Michael Jackson (I checked, the Beatles sold the most records of all time, followed by Elvis, followed by Michael Jackson) so if we're going on sales the Beatles and Elvis are fighting for the king of rock AND the kings of pop. Classical? Many people would argue Mozart. But clearly that was an argument for Eminem and truth is he's the biggest selling rap artist but not the most influential, hardly anyone tries to sound like Em, he's too unique and original. You say the most influential but the truth is most rappers try to be like Jay Z and the rest try to be like 2Pac, Eminem is so unique most people would sound weird if they rapped about killing their baby mommas, their moms doing drugs or dissing pop stars. Most rappers either rap about money and hoes like Jay Z or rap about being a thug like 2Pac or try to say something conscious like 2Pac so they're currently the most influential (sorry, you're clearly a Stan trying to justify Eminem being the king of Hip-Hop but your theory doesn't hold up.) If you'd said Eminem was king cos he sold the most you would have a better argument but then I'd refer back to my previous comment, some shit rappers have sold alot of records in the past cos idiots buy music so sales doesn't really mean shit. There is no king. Just opinions.

Eminem may have the bars and rapping talent but no one hits home like 2pac. He has songs that will still be relative for generations to come. I think deep down inside everyone knows 2pac is the king of hip hop, they just wont admit it because they want to keep with the trends and be fresh with hip hop.

There cant be no king of hip hop unless every hip hop head agrees with a certain person being the king but that will never happen......why? Because hip hop is a very competitive artform, certain rappers bring different things to the table such as flow and lyricism that people are either going to like or hate. Where is pop music isnt really that competitive compared to hip hop and we all know Michael is automatically the king because he done made music that changed shit, no other pop artist has the caliber to make pop music like he did, he brought everyone together and was an icon that majority of people, prolly 90% of people adored. Where is with rappers, people look up to different rappers because of their swag or lyrics or flow so its hard to narrow it down to one rapper who has the full package everyone will like.

A King nowadays would have to surpass Biggie, Pac, JayZ, Nas, or, Eminem in overall quality music, albums, songs. No one new has made any huge impact since Eminem reached his prime. He was the last one to really make some noise. Lil Wayne, Drake, and Kendrick are at the top of the list as far as now music goes but they can't compare to the 5 I mentioned earlier. But everybody has their own Kings. I've heard someone say Cassidy and King Los are the best rappers right now which I definitely disagree with.

I don't see a problem on saying who is the king of Hip Hop, the difference from Hip Hop to other genres is that throughout the history we've had a lot of icons that could easily sit on this throne, and also, the level of impact and contribution to the culture between them were very similar.

@7:50, After Jackson did the special for Motown and blew UP, Im sure that's when CBS/Epic (even tho it helped them) got their lawyers to draw up contracts to forbid MJ to participate on ANYBODY'S happening outside the company without their blessing: *hence, The Simpsons back in 1990 when he wasn't allowed to sing, The California Raisins before then, and whatever else. SO SAD!

Eyedea is a timeless king. Sadistik is a king, kristoff krane is a king, guante & big cats are kings, Aesop rock is a king, El P and Killer Mike are kings. A king to me is talent regardless of fame and that differs from most other peoples definitions.

'The King of pop' was not a marketing plan, it was Elizabeth Taylor who coined the phrased while presenting MJ with the Heritage award "the true king of pop, rock and soul." Consequently, The media ran with the KING OF POP. And Madonna is considered the queen of pop.

Vlad was wil'n when he mentioned chris brown in the king of R&B discussion. And I think majority of the artist were no longer signed to Motown when Mike did the moon walk for the reunion show. You gotta remember that was the 25th anniversary of Motown and pretty much all of Motown artist had left motown. Mike wasn't the only one you wasn't signed at that time.

I agree with Immortal on this one butI will take it a bit further. I would say there is a king or 2 or 3 for every decade. Example...The 80's kings would be probably Rakim,KRS & BDK,90's Biggy,Pac,Nas,WU & Pun.

Look at pac he has never ever won a respectable award why? because mainstream media will never want the public to hear his message. Pac said it perfectly: They don't give a fuck about us And if I choose to ride Thuggin' till the day I die Cause they don't give a fuck about us But when I start to rise A hero in they children's eyes Now they give a fuck about us

I agree with the Goats of the different eras for me, 90s was Nas over the decade with Biggie & 2pac having mass influence. 00-10 Eminem, Jay Z & Kanye West. 10-20 Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole & the Migos lol (big sad) and for this next decade I feel like it was suppose to be Nipsey Hussle, with Mac Miller imo 100%. But now I think Cordae will be that guy this decade.
