Galil's first real combat proving was in the jungles of Nicaragua, as the Nicaraguan National Guard adopted it as its standard issue weapon in 1974. It proved more reliable than the Sandinista's ex-Cuban FALs...exactly how the Israelis had hoped. From there, the Guatemalans, Colombians, Peruvians and South Africans adopted it.

@Sean Reed its just as reliable but more accurate. The ak is not the alpha and omega of rifles... Sloppy build, less accuracy and sharp edges/points do not attract professional armies that clean their weapons every day.

  • @alejobola

@Sean Reed Same as Gil Oro, same reliability with more accuracy, a bit lighter, and more stable due to the tubular and straight buttstock. I will also add that the 223 ammo has less stopping power than the 7,62x39 of the AK but it has a longer range.

I only briefly used the SCAR-L as i left shortly after but i mean.. You can´t really compare the two. The Scar is much more modular and can fit many acessories that you can´t with the Galil. We had some "cool" RIS rails for the galils at one point but holding the zero was questionable after a few hits. I really like the Galil but its just old in comparison. @@codyi7102

I had one of these (Glilon) when I was in the Israeli artillery corp back in '93, loved it. Never shot it on automatic, as that was a punishable offense. Guys would bang the stock closed by banging it on their upper arm. I had a trick where I would put a hidden roll of toilet paper under my hat and bang the stock closed on my head. My commanders thought I was crazy to do that, got me some respect.

In the IDF it was called "Glilon" (meaning short Galil) - it was issued especially to tank and artillery crewman. back in the day, troops used to install on the top of the charging handle a rubber insolation sleeve off of an old military wiring harness - for better grip, it worked great.

Carried by this contributor in support and combat operations in '97/'98 (עזה ודרום לבנון). Never failed to go "bang" when the trigger was pulled, unlike the older M-16s and variants found in accompanying units. When the Galil entered (limited) IDF service back in 1974, Vietnam was already over. Very few of these rifles had been issued, mostly to well-connected, high ranking officers, before and during the Yom Kippur War in Oct. 1973. It was in service with elite infantry brigades for the 1978 "Operation Litani" against the PLO in South Lebanon. It worked!

The Israeli Galil is one of the best AK variants ever and it’s better than original AKs!

cjhyde78 not sure if i can answer correctly but i think Valmet made the first few decades the model RK62 and then Sako started product the never version the RK95 along the RK62. My service rifle was from 1990 and it was marked as sako but later i was given a new rifle that was from 71 and it was a valmet. Valmet made civilian rifles and military ones until Sako got into te game. They have already made the TRG ”sniper” series etc so it makes sence if they continue building new rifles.

cjhyde78 haha. The best quality you can expect from finland. It lasted well during my conscrip service and might easily last couple decades on. 😎

This is the 3rd or 4th time I've watched this in the past few months and I just now noticed he has a Micro Galil muzzle device on the end instead.

I usually only find about half of the brass with my Galeo. It's crazy how far the Galil rifles fling brass.
