Yea, the thing is he has done some great stuff, but not amazing enough for TV, so him and his team are really trying to fluff him up to be a star which they successfully managed. He climbed Everest 2 years after breaking 3 spine vertebrae in a parachute training incident where it didn't deploy, that's great. He was SAS, but he never saw action as a reservist and his unit had no use in the SAS and was absorbed into intel. Sure it is very, very difficult physically and mentally to get in which is an accomplishment, but anyone off the street could apply for it. So to audiences if they really found out they would be "oh cool, but kinda lame". So while there is sprinkling of truths that are impressive, they omit and lie about a LOT of stuff for his character. Bear Grylls is just a dude that got SAS training and tried to sell a show hard.

Whatever he did on screen, were real. The scenarios and environments around him, were crafted and fake. I mean, you can't expect the nature to have the scenarios they are trying to show on screen on command at any given time, that's just impossible. At the end of the day, it's entertainment...it ain't that deep

except when a lot of his survival techniques are genuinely harmful... urine isn't sterile for example and drinking your own piss would make dehydration even worse... and they never intended to come clean until they were caught out, if they had just intended it as a tutorial on how to do these things it would be fine but they wanted to actually pretend like bear was doing that shit in real time. also they faked even more shit in his new show so i think it's safe to say even though he's plenty capable bear is just an attention seeker who will ham anything up for TV

After some research his SAS membership is also in question. Its not a issue of " was he really in the SAS" the truth is was albeit reservist one. Real SAS memeber like the branch of secret operators you think of when hear SAS, can't and won't call his out because he's realitionship with the UK armed forces serves as marketing tool for the UK armed forces.
