Javed Ahmed Ghamidi is a Pakistani Muslim theologian, a Quran scholar, and an educationist. Mr. Ghamidi is a student of Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi and Maulana Abul A’la Maududi. His Ustad was Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi(r.a) who has expanded on this topic very much and has a book called "Tazkiyah e Nafs" in Urdu. I don't know if it has been translated but you should read it and it will clear away most of the wrong concepts people have about Deen, Insha'Allah. That book is a jist of Islahi's thought on Islam as a whole.

The primary objective of religion is purification. Purification of body, dress and above all of character and soul. How to achieve this.? 1. Make habit of Self-analysis and reflection on daily basis before going to sleep. 2. Perform Salah in the mosque as much as possible, 2 / 3/ 4/5 whatever is possible to reap the spiritual benefits. 3. Read Quran with translation and understanding whenever possible. 4. Take care of the company. It's really hard to escape the negative effects of a negative company.
