Imam Abu Hanifa - The Beacon of Scholars (Legal Philosophy)

Imam Abu Hanifa, known affectionally as 'Imam Azam Abu Hanifa' was a Muslim jurist and theologian who founded the Hanafi madhab (legal school of thought). This video is on Imam Abu Hanifa's life.
The Cyrus cylinder, the Magna Carta and the Napoleonic Code are often mentioned as the benchmarks of revolutionary works within jurisprudential history. Yet, for as influential as these landmark legal systems are, none truly compare to the grand ingenuity of Abu Hanifa's legal school of thought, and his ability to conceive of a legal methodology within a constantly shifting multilingual, multi-ethnic, multi-religious political landscape.
While his name is instantly recognisable to most Muslims, the life and ideas of Imam Abu Hanifa remains an open mystery to both those within the Muslim community and beyond. Fusing philosophical tools such as analogical deduction with the pre-existing traditions and dogma of the Arab understanding of Islam at the time, Abu Hanifa managed to create a legal system that could adapt to cultural norms and novel ethical dilemmas unseen by the Prophet and his companions in their time. Today, Imam Abu Hanifa is best associated with the Hanafi madhab.
Join us on a journey through the history of legal philosophy within the Islamicate world, as we attempt to elucidate, for the first time, the thoughts and lives of some of the world's most influential jurists.

Unfortunately some sweeping statements that sound good but you didn’t give any academic references to support them such as the statement that he was a big advocate of reason and against literalist reading of scripture

#Article: Did Imam Abu Hanifah رحمه الله follow Rai or Sunnah? Imām Abu Hanīfah said “Beware of speaking about matters of Deen based on Raï (personal opinions) and hold firm to the Sunnah for the one who leaves the Sunnah goes astray” (i) Raï means juristic opinions. Al-Tūfī said, "There are two types of raï: (1) One which is based purely on one's intellect (2) One which involves using the intellect to extract rulings from Quran and Ahādith. And this is what is meant when it is said, “this is the Raï of Imām Abu Hanīfah or this is the Raï of Imām As-Shafei.”(ii) _In essence, Raï signifies Fiqh. Therefore, when it is asserted that Imam Abu Hanifah and his disciples were "Ashāb Al Raï", it does not imply that they disregarded Hadith and relied solely on personal opinions; rather, it signifies their proficiency in jurisprudence. Moreover, being adept in fiqh does not preclude one from also being well-versed in Hadīth. This is because there is no inherent conflict between fiqh and Hadīth, as Hadīth constitutes the recorded teachings of Rasūlullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, while fiqh represents the methodology for interpreting them._ Imām Khattābi said, “Hadīth is like a foundation and Fiqh is like it's edifice. Every edifice devoid of a foundation will collapse and every foundation without an edifice is uninhabited and dilapidated.” (iii) Imām Tirmidhī narrated the Hadīth of Umm ‘Atiyya about the ritual bath of Zaynab رضي الله عنها and explained it by quoting the rulings of the Fuqaha (Experts in Fiqh) and then commented, *“And this is what has been mentioned by the Fuqaha and they are more knowledgeable regarding meaning of the Hadith”* (Tirmidhi no 990) Imām Mālik said, “We only take Ahādith from the Fuqaha"(iv) Ibn Wahb said, “Every Muhaddith who does not follow an Imām in Fiqh is misguided. If I had not studied under Imām Mālik and Abu Layth, I would have been astray too” (v) Al-Khatīb Al-Baghdādi, said “Know that one does not become a Faqīh merely by narrating abundance of Ahādith. One only becomes a Faqīh by extracting the meanings of a Hadith and by pondering over it” (vi) Ibn ‘Abdil Barr says, *“No Imām rejected a Hadīth except that the Hadīth was abrogated according to him, or that there was a defect in the chain of transmission*[...] People have criticized Abu Hanīfah and have labelled him as a Murji’ite[...] People were jealous of him and have levelled various accusations against him and have fabricated stories about him which are unbefitting" (vii) Ibn Taymiyyah says “He who thinks that Abu Hanīfah or other Aimmah have preferred Qiyās over Sahih Ahādith has erred and has spoken out of speculation and desires” (viii) Ibn Qayyim says “Abu Hanīfah preferred weak Ahādith over Qiyās. For e.g, logic demands that laughing in Salāh does not break Wudhu, but there is a weak Hadīth that suggests that laughing in Salāh break both Wudhu and Salāh and Abu Hanīfah adopted that view. So, if he was following Raï, he would have discarded the Hadīth and followed logic instead” (ix) In fact, Imam Abū Hanīfah abhorred using intellect only to derive rulings so much that he said “To urinate in the Musjid is better than some of the Qiyās that people do” (x) May Allah safeguard the reputation of Imām Abū Hanīfah and dispel any misunderstandings about him. Thank you for the comment. From what I understand, the original plural of ‘waahid’ was ‘awHād’ but the و changed in to a ء and the two ء turned in to a Madd. Although you are correct that āHād is used more frequently, awHaad is also technically correct, as the aforementioned change of turning the و in to a ء is not a compulsory change according to the rules of Nahw. Nevertheless, moving forward we will probably start saying āHād to avoid confusion 😅.

Sorry to disappoint the viewers, but the information in this documentary is almost, if not totally wrong ! Abu Hanifa's father was a great carpet trader, when he died his two sons inherited, each one, half of his business. Abu Hanifa was a good for nothing guy who lost everything except that his father gave him a good education. At that time reading & writing was considered a blessing. He roamed in the streets of Kufa and spending his time in mosques, thus taking notes from the scholars' lectures ! That's why they say that he had had a 1000 teachers. It was too hard for him to memorize his notes, that's why he opted for Raai (analogy). And analogy in Islam is REJECTED, because Iblees was the first to use Raai ! Seeing his punctuality in the mosque and interest in religion, he was offered the post of imam in a mosque. The news went in the ears of the king who subsequently sent his minister with a gift to gauge his personality, because the Abbassid kings were afraid of Ehlul Bait PBUT & their followers, lest they would be overthrown. The minister didn't find Abu Hanifa worthy of consideration, he returned with the gift to the king. The king thought to himself, if the minister found Abu Hanifa a worthless guy, therefore he can be manipulated! He sent back the minister with the gift, on receiving the gift he immediately issued a fatwa of kufr against whoever goes against the king !!! Thereon he became famous thoughout Kufa. At the same time Imam Ja'far Al Sadiq PBUH was the Imam in Madina and there wasn't a problem which the Imam couldn't solve ! All the Muslims use to gather around him for knowledge in both science & religion ! The popularity of the Imam was a threat to the king, Mansur, so he convoqued the Imam to Kufa. He organised a debate between the Imam and Abu Hanifa, unfortunately the debate turned to be catastrophic for Abu Hanifa who couldn't answer even one question out of 40 !!! During the Imam's stay in Kufa, Abu Hanifa used to visit Him frequently, thus calling himself Imam's student ! When leaving the Imam, he would criticize him and would issue fatwas against those of Imam;s. Imam CURSED him. Malik bin Anas, who was a student of Imam in Madina said : IT'S BETTER TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY WHERE ABU HANIFA'S FATWAS ARE FOLLOWED ! Many of his contemporary scholars and even Ibn Hanbal said : ABU HANIFA IS THE WORST CHILD TO BE BORN IN ISLAM ! According to Abu Hanifa IT IS PERMISSIBLE TO PERFORM NIKAH WITH MEHRAM, IF THE DUE IS PAID TO A PROSTITUTE IT'S LEGAL AND THERE'S NO HARM IN COMMITTING LAWAT (GAY ACTS) !!!??? He became 'imam e azam' just because he was protected by the Abbassid tyrants. To conclude I'd suggest that the reader undergoes investigation & research from different sources of information.

😊😊😊😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩😍 If the human intellect was sufficient, the Creator of the worlds (the Almighty ALLAH) would not have sent any of the prophets or any book The best golden age and pure Islam was the era of the Prophet and the four caliphs (rulers) after the Prophet (PBUH) In that time, the opponents of Islam killed the three caliphs of Islam in a row one after the other, and ended the golden and pure age of Islam, then the rest of the subsequent periods of Muslim rulers have no Islamic (Qur'anic) validities Later, the opponents of Islam always planned various efforts to stop and destroy the school of Islam until they were able to distort the meanings and interpretations of the monotheistic words of the Great Quran and create fake hadiths, different groups in the name and dress of Islam and changed the opinions of the majority of Muslims. So we are still observers and witnesses of these cases in Islamic societies The major and basic problem of the Islamic world is that the majority of people who call themselves Muslims are not dependent on the words of the Great Qur'an and authentic hadith but are only tied and dependent on Mullahs and Imam's speeches (there is a huge business among all religions) It should be said that the words and actions of me and you or of any others are not the manifestation and laws of the religion of Islam The real Islam is the granted words of the Great Qur'an and the authentic hadith of the Prophet (those hadiths which are in accordance with the school, spirit, and policy of the Great Quran, not in conflict and against to the Great Quran). But the opponents of heavenly religions and worshipers besides ALLAH The Almighty have always existed in human history. But they have been wisely brought to decline and destruction by Almighty ALLAH in their appointed time and period which ALLAH planned No kind of trickery and plot can change or take away the religion of Islam (the Arabic words of the Holy Quran) or make it fail. The religion of Islam (the Arabic words of the Holy Quran), which shines as a bright sun is not weak and defeated, but to the highest degree of stability, justice, perfection and knowledge, eloquence, science, courtesy, and logical expressions, explains the scientific facts of the system of creation in the times (present, past and future) for humanity Yes, dear ones / If one of the words of the Holy Quran was without science, justice, logical reasons, and wisdom, that word would be enough for the opponents of the Holy Quran to destroy Islam during the past fourteen centuries through media, publications, and news in the East-West of the earth Therefore, the opponents of the Holy Quran did not need to plan and create groups such as Shiites, Sufis, hypocrites, Taliban, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, etc., to defame and tarnish the religion of Islam in the garb of Islam. ALLAH Is The Greatest 😊😊😊😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩😍 بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم In the name of ALLAH, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Quran, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy, and differences, etc.) in your breasts, - a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.10:57 😊😊😊😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩😍 But today we have to witness the actions and words of people and groups, because the hearts are under the possession of the creator of hearts. Human hearts are always changeable and can be inclined towards good or evil affairs / The end is hidden, no one knows which way the human heart will be inclined at the end of its lifetime except the creator of the world (The Almighty ALLAH) May you be good in affairs ، ALLAH is the Greatest

Abu Hanifah denies that he is changing the Deen. In order to demonstrate the falsehood of the rumours, he then goes on his knees in front of Imam al-Baqir and uses the comparison between (1) the share of a man and a woman in the spoils of war; (2) fasting and prayer with regard to a woman in menstruation having to pay in the former and not the latter; (3) urine and semen in respect of the method of purification for either one. After this lucid demonstration of his usage of Qiyas only where there is no textual evidence, and strictly adhering to the authority of text where it exists, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir stands up and kisses Imam Abu Hanifah on his forehead.
