Imagine Having To Mine Gold With NOTHING!
So many people have to start again, the part of a lot of our lives where we have to dig deep and start rebuilding our lives. For a lot of people this involves making a merge living gold panning.
Ive met a lot of people who live, for a time, on the creek panning and sluicing for gold to make money to get by. And for me it puts things into perspective about what equipment we as gold prospectors actually need.

Bring back the ‘Start with Nothing’ series (a water bottle and bowl and buy better equipment with the gold you get, working your way up to a sluice box w/petrol pump. I enjoyed the 1st and only episode you did.

Ive used a plastic christmas sweet box, that worked quite well although its only got one riffle as such and theyre a bit fragile If you had a bit of carpet and a plastic rubble bag or dog food bag to go underneath that would catch any fines that went through This is a great little how to start from nothing video...certainly got me thinking

Liked, shared and commented. I found my first gold with no investment. Now I have invested about $50. But I’ve found many times that value in gold. I’m poor n can’t spent much. But this hobby costs very little. And it’s easy to make a profit if u do t spend much to begin with 🤴🏻🍻🗽

Absolutely! If you have little money (or are just a cheap bastard like me) you can make prospecting equipment out of just about anything! Dumpsters, dumps, things folks put out for rubbish pickup, yard sales, etc. are all good sources.

Great points. I’d add that the difference between then and now it that most the easy gold’s been found. A modern prospector’s toolkit is an attempt to handle increasingly worked over deposits. The obvious example is detectorists who often upgrade the machines/coils. Add increasing regulations and decreasing areas that aren’t off limits, it’s understandable why prospectors are looking for an edge. Still, I get what you’re saying. Reminds me of a book, “Bacon and Beans from a Gold Pan.” About a couple who lost everything during the Great Depression and moved up to the Sierra foothills to eke out a living with a pick and shovel.

I totally agree My first sluice was made out of a metal 6” framing stud and an 18 wheeler mud flap with v riffles on one side I cut down to fit inside the metal stud that I found in a construction dumpster…it didn’t cost me a penny and it catches 98% of the flour gold I put into it sure I’ve purchased a few fancy expensive sluices since then but I still like my homemade one better than those go figure lol. Thanks for sharing see you on the next one👍🏼👊🏼

You forget that the ancients were able to pick up the elemental gold by fingers and there was a bunch of it naturally concentrated in selected areas near where they lived. Most of that resource has been already picked up. We now have to used different methods to get far less gold and far more time to do it.

Well, let's see! Now that we have the Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria, you can go around and collect empty softdrink cans and plastic bottles that have the 10 cent symbol. While you are collecting your bags of containers you will probably find a bucket or two to help you with your quest. A couple of years ago Chris even made a simple little ripple sluice using a plastic water bottle. Depending on what you have available you can join several water bottles together to make a longer and wider sluice. Cashing in your containers will give you a small amount of cash to buy a small shovel and possibly a classifier. It would depend upon what was available at your local hardware store. Don't forget to buy a loaf of bread 🥪 and some spread as you are going to need energy to prospect for your gold. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 PS Chris how do I get in touch:with you privately?

One thing you DO need is a place that HAS gold - enough to separate with what ever tools you're using. At Sutter's Mill you could just pick up exposed chunks in the stream. Play sand? probably has some. My back yard doesn't have enough to see/separate though there probably IS some. After all sea water has SOME (and probably sea salt has some, too) - just not very much.

It has been my driving force to make alot of my own gear. Yes , I have bought mats , bunnings moss, dream mat, etc . But essentially boxes , sluices, trommel. I just like making stuff. I've made sluices out of rubbish, builders waste. I look at stuff and can see an alternative use. Great content as per usual, thought provoking. ❤it 😊

Hi Chris, you are spot on with this story. I was very priveleged to visit the old Panguna Mine site in Bougainville. There are guys up there who have made a miller table from a sheet of plywood and a garden hose that they kink to regulate water flow. Maybe the lesson is to not go into debt for gold?

The original gold mat/sluice mat, sheep skin. From sciencenews article "Golden Fleece myth was based on real events, geologists contend" November 25, 2014 "Mountain streams in the Svaneti region of Georgia carry bits of gold and gold-specked gravel that erode out of bordering rock formations, say geologist Avtandil Okrostsvaridze of Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia, and his colleagues. Local villagers put sheepskins in these streams to catch floating gold, a technique that goes back thousands of years - suggesting that the region is the province of the ancient Colchis Kingdom." "Present-day miners place entire sheepskins in streambeds within 100 to 500 meters of gold deposits, Okrostsvaridze says. Rocks and ropes hold down each sheepskin. Pieces of gold erode out of rocky deposits, wash downstream and get trapped in the animals’ coats"

The only priblem with that tbeory is that sheeps wool is loaded with oil...grease, actually...called lanolin. Witbout modern detergents very hard to remove enough to allow gold to be caught, Id think.... Signed, spinner/fibre fan
