FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

    I mean, Phenom is more advanced than 95% of commercial aircraft in service from virtually all points of view. I'm more impressed some of the ancient airliners from 50s and 60s are still out there doing that with stone age tech.

    The best part of the video is when Steve told Osama he was faster than Vref. I'm sure Osama knew his speed and was satisfied with it(probably flying a gust factor) but when you have a safety pilot his/her job is to point out anomalies and that's what happened. Perfect CRM and another excellent video.

  • @jwdk7662

    @jwdk7662

    Thought they normally have at least 10 knots higher than Vref on an approach?

  • @captuelli

    @captuelli

    5 жыл бұрын

    JW K Vref gives you a 30% margin to stall and this is the minimum speed for the final approach. It’s recommended to further add a wind increment of 0.5x the steady wind plus the full gust on top. This should be between +5 and +20 knots for my operation but check your airplane or operator documentation!

  • @FlyingSi

    @FlyingSi

    5 жыл бұрын

    VRef is not corrected for wind. His speed should be VApp, which is bugged here. That uses 1/2 steady headwind and full gust. It’s not perfect CRM at all - it’s a distraction at low level.

  • @captuelli

    @captuelli

    5 жыл бұрын

    Flying Si Aviation Videos & Reviews you’re right. Vref is determined by 1.3VSO and your minimum control airspeed. Vapp and Vref confusion I see often... people call out speed as soon as you’re slightly below Vapp, as long as your trend is not to decrease below Vref I would argue that call out is not necessary but it’s also not bad CRM to do it... better say something sooner than end up in a stall short of the runway in SFO with a 777

  • @FlyingSi

    @FlyingSi

    Tim Uellendahl I see what you mean, but I’d say that pointing out an error which doesn’t exist on a type you’re unqualified on to a pilot who might not be vastly experienced on type (from comments here) doesn’t enhance safety. It could have resulted in confusion and the speed being reduced...

    Couldn't help but notice Osama vigorously shaking his legs through-out this video and the out-bound leg of the flights. Some may see that as being nervous due to being new to the plane but in reality, he's probably overcome with joy and excitement at the opportunity to live the life that he is in that airplane and that experience in general. Being envious would be an understatement of great magnitude on my part.

    Thanks for your videos, and thanks to Osama. Didn't know mach numbers are temperature dependent, thanks for including that in the video.

    foomeister2347 Mach Number is the ratio between true airspeed and the speed of sound and speed of sound is a direct function of temperature. The higher you go, the colder it gets and the speed of sound gets Lower and vice versa. This is why you climb at a Mach Number above FL290 to avoid having the airflow over your wing exceed the speed of sound and cause Mach tuck.

    @@shawnclark732 Nope - pretty much just temperature and humidity. That's a common misconception though.

    Only problem with visiting the islands is, I never want to leave! Coming home to cold and low sun is depressing this time of year. :( AWESOME video as usual, Steve. I'd have never known what a Phenom even looked like - let alone see, and ride along virtually inside the cockpit - if not for your channel. THANK YOU!! 👍👍
