Imagination and Empathy: The Call of the Clown | Kato Buss | TEDxUCO

In an increasingly desensitized world, Kato Buss, Ph.D. discusses the importance of identifying and accessing our inner-clown. As a universal archetype, the clown evokes the child in us all and serves as a greater metaphor of the human condition. We all have hopes, dreams, fears, and flaws. The clown asks us to share our vulnerabilities, in order to better relate and appreciate each other.
Kato Buss is an Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts. He has over twenty years’ experience as an actor, director, playwright, and teacher. Dr. Buss holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from the University of Oregon. His work has been published in the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Western States Theatre Review, and the North- Northwest Anthology of New Plays. Kato is an awarding winning teacher and mentor. At UCO, he teaches acting, directing, and theatre history.

Holy moly! I found this video by accident! This guy was my theatre teacher back in college! He was a great acting teacher. I have great memories of his class!

Brought me to tears. Being a clown is the biggest challenge but as an actor it’s what sets me free and I am no longer afraid when I finally release and become the clown. Thank you for those words!

"Vulnerability is the path to authentic self". This statement hit my heart the most. Imagination, empathy, vulnerability. A triangle for allowing the inner clown to work. Interesting

Thanks. You made me smile - deep down authentic smile. That's what I like about the clown. There is a connection to the inner self, and it touches others authentically.

Three of the most essential aspects of the human experience. Society has been taught for too long that these are moral failings when in fact they are our respective greatest strengths .
