Questions for your next video: 1. How did you get the deal? (you contacting vs them contacting you😍) 2. Did you pitch your price or they did or it was a bit of both parties negotiation? 3. Were they completely dependent on you for illustration ideation or they had some inputs? 4. How difficult was it to handle a huge project + any tips for someone's first picture book? Congrats with the book, that is sooo cool! I love children's books and always look through them in libraries and book shops and love to find the hidden gem with pictures that speak to the imagination and just give me a warm feeling, those I would have loved as a child. They are rare and yours would certainly be on my favourites list.

I’m most curious about the layout process; do you get the text and then shoot them back some thumbnail ideas about your illustration concepts for each page and they approve? I would imagine you wouldn’t want to start the actual drawing/finishing stage if they didn’t in the end like that drawing idea. Can’t wait for the next video! I'll definitely explain in an upcoming video about the whole creative process because I was also unsure about how it would work before I started, but basically I got the text and then drew all of the pages as draft sketches, they provided feedback on those and then I drew the colour illustrations 😊

this is gorgeous. I would love to have a bridge between illustrators and writers on my channel. Would love an interview or a panel with illustrators ❤️

This is so exciting Mimi, congratulations! Really cool to see this illustration come together, too. I can't wait to see more of the process and hear what it was like working with the publisher. One question I have is, did they give you the freedom to create the layout of the pages (like where the text goes) or did they send you the pages with the text and you had to draw around them and make your illustrations fit what was already there? Did they give a lot of feedback about how things had to look, or did they mostly let you do your own thing? Thanks in advance if you get to these questions!

Thanks for sharing this! Very nice illustrations. I saw where others were asking about technical aspects and that is a much needed video, please! Like the size of canvas, bleed, margins and spread. Are there templates that you can use as layers in illustrator or procreate? If not, you should make some I think people would buy them for sure. Thanks again for sharing your talents!

Congratulations Mimi!! 🙌🏻 I never know how to choose a price, if its a book with 25 illustrations, some have more than one character in it, others are more like props like the one you did on the video, do you price them differently? Looks good Mimi, how did you learn photoshop? Is it comparable to procreate. I would be interested in learning the size of pages & how they are delivered to the publisher, how you decided on choosing one etc…

Thank you! I roughly laid out the text and gave lots of space around it for the book designer to make changes if they wanted to, the actual art files I provided had no text (just the blank space) 😊

I'd love to watch one of your videos on the steps you need to take to make your art in a printable format too; the proper format and details like that. Also, I primarily use Procreate for illustrating, but I notice that in your program you have the layout for the pages, including the edges/bleed areas already there so you can see where your drawing is in relation to the words and page edges. Is that only something you can do with Adobe programs?

I'll definitely make a video about the technical breakdown for things like printing, I'm sure you could add bleed margins in Procreate because I've just added mine as a layer for a visual guide for myself that I can toggle on and off.

Yes I drew each spread as a separate Photoshop file. I could've layered them together as groups but I found it easier to do them separate so the files weren't huge 😊

The stylus looks comfortable. Did it come with the laptop? I have a Lenovo and I find the stylus too thin for my hand.

It's a really good one! It's a Microsoft Pen as a I have a Microsoft laptop, I like that it has a little rubber tip on the end 😊
