Illegal tobacco the 'new cash crop': Daily Telegraph’s Crime Editor
Illegal tobacco is the “new cash crop” due to the amount of money it can be sold for, says The Daily Telegraph’s Crime Editor Mark Morri.
Mr Morri joined Sky News host Steve Price to discuss Victoria’s tobacco wars where shops were being fire-bombed and set alight.
“It is amazing, up to 50 premises have been fire-bombed,” he said.

The only thing that's criminal is the amount of tax we pay for cigarettes and alcohol

@@Prognosis__ well I'm a fifo worker and travel through Dubai or Qatar every 4 weeks. I can get 3 cartons of 200 for less than the price of 2 packs at home. The trick is to buy enough durries for 2 months on the way to work. Half get smoked at work then the remainder go in my check in baggage for the flight home. I fly business and have never once had my bags searched upon arrival in the last 20 years. Phuck the gubbermint and their taxes.
When the government tax is $45 of a $50 packet of cigarettes, what do you expect

Simple smokers don’t get healthcare and remove the tax. Everyone is a winner they get their freedom we all pay less.

@MrWhitmen1981 smokers pay way more health care than you ever will in tax. With your stupid logic, you could also apply to motorbike riders, miners, maybe even to people living in dangerous suburbs.

If it's illegal or overtaxed the free market finds a way.

Supply and demand...
The Americans fought a revolution over far less taxes.
Too much tax on cigarettes and alcohol
Its not rocket science. Its similar to the situation in California, when pot was legalized. The state taxed it so much, looking for a windfall, that it's still cheaper to buy the bootleg stuff.
You make anything illegal or high taxed the beneficiary is crime
The tobacco industry has the right to defend itself from Australian taxes.
What did they think would happen when they raised the tax and price of tobacco People will rather buy from the cheaper options and then the people make money not the government They lose
You can thank the government for creating a new illegal market. Why risk meth and coke charges, when with tobacco you get a couple years max if caught
Excessive taxation is the problem. Labor wastage is the cause of the problem
When you make a pack of smokes 50 bucks what the hell do you think is going to happen?
Talk about David Mcbride getting sentenced for exposing war crimes
What does the gubbermint expect when they're raping the consumers with their tobacco taxes?
It's a case of robin hood vs sheriff of Nottingham. People want cheaper cigarettes. Smokers have been shaken down to $60 a packet. Who's the real criminal? The person selling them for $60 or the person selling the same product for $20
No one has ever won the war on drugs ... EVER!
Economics 101. That is what happens when the govt taxes things at high levels. In USA for decades mafia made money from untaxed cigs. Now untaxed MJ in places where legalized 🚬 .
ohhh no, the taxman is coming after our weed... *Falco - Steuermann*
Stop criminalizing tobacco.
Move to the USA near an Indian Reservation and you will get all the tobacco you want. Cheap cheap. Super cheap.

Cash crop will always be medical services.
And alcohol is ridiculous aswell. Come to think of it, just the cost of living is ridiculous.
I'm a man and always ask for the "smoking causes harm to unborn babies" men can't get pregnant

Rem,inds me of a story from when I worked in Brasil. Brasilian bloke I worked with goes into a tobacconist and buys a pack that had "smoking causes impotence" on it. He hands it back to the cashier and says "No no no, give me the one with lung cancer on it" 🤣

Government caused this problem with their greed. Now their greed drives them to complain snd want to stop it
Whatever happened to tobacco and alcohol taxes being to fund medical sector? Even after the past few years its more unfunded then ever. Taxes taken by way of fruad
I can buy a packet of ciggies in the US for $7. Here $55. The government taxes on cigarettes are criminal, the mafia rorts less. But ripping us poor smokers off here is quite legal. As a pensioner I don't have many pleasures. I had my smokes and my beer. Now I cant afford it any more. If I can buy under the counter ciggies way cheaper I'll do it and screw the politicians.
I smoke Manchester 20s that cost $ 15 , they are exactly the same Made in England as Benson and Hedges 20s that cost $ 60 . The Criminals are sitting in Canberra .
