Illaoi can chase pretty well *if* she's really ahead; you land your E then just completely ignore it, walk after the real champion. Remember that them walking out of range of the E also activates it, just like if you killed it, and late game usually enough for you to get in range of another E, so she can actually be really hard to get away from, esp with iceborne. It leaves you a bit vulnerable to turn-arounds but if you're hugely ahead of them and their team is far enough away for E to come back off cd at least, it's fine.

R does not just make the tentacles faster, it makes their hitbox indicator invisible, so you have to guess where they'll slam, on top of being faster, and that combination is what makes them so hard to dodge with R

Which is one of the dumbest parts of her kit. Removing basic counterplay functions to cover up a design weakness is just so lazy. I'm pretty sure it's only like that because they're worried about visual noise or something with all the extra slams.

​​​​@@GlacialScioncounterplay is not fighting her when she ults. Most champions today can easily just disengage when she ults. And go back in when she does not have ult. Same thing as fighting darius with his stacks, you dont wanna fight him when he has full stacks on you.

@@FantasticKruH That's counterplay along a different axis. You'd still disengage from Illaoi when she ults whether the hitboxes were visible or not. The problem with the hit boxes disappearing is that it's a bandaid fix that feels bad for everyone. It's annoying and inconsistent compared to any other AoE in the game, and it doesn't actually provide much, if any, additional power to Illaoi.

Sundered sky heal doesn't just heal based off of missing health. The heal also scales with base ad. And excluding Mega Gnar, Illaoi has the highest base ad in the game at lvl 18. Edit: That's also another reason why sheen items and sterak's are so strong on her.

Something I didn't hear you mention but is important - The vessel you pull from her E counts as a champion, so any abilities that are based on hitting champions gives stacks (stacking conqueror, bonus stacks for veigar (and even more for killing it), stacks for Nasus/Smolder for killing it, etc).

@@Luwuci Not quite? OP here is pointing out that it works like a champion for basically anything. Easy dark harvest stacks are another one. Pekin talked about it in a slightly different context.

E for melee, q for range. Since ranged champs can safely kill the wall tentacles, going e max vs them means you get no slams, tentacles don't hit as hard when you do land e and you're stuck trying to kill the spirit in melee range while getting attacked for trying to echo damage lowering spirit uptime. Against melee with e max they either fight you constantly to contest tentacles and risk getting hit with e or play passively and eventually make the lane impossible since you can pull their spirit out of turret range. Also ult has to hit at least 1 champ or a spirit to slam faster.

Ult doesn’t need to hit a champion to get tentacles to hit faster, you can get surprise kills by killing the spirit, leaving them at low health and ulting, causing a really fast tentacle to kill them

@@tiwundodias140 To clarify, if you ult without hitting anything the animation speed will increase for tentacles spawning from e but not the slam rate, which is why yone could avoid the slams like normal. Not really a scenario where you should ult without hitting at least a clone unless for whatever reason the enemy is low on hp and decides to recall after failing test of faith with tentacles spawning and even then a regular e slam will kill so I think that particular tip may work in fights against inexperienced/ new players. Ulting to kill a clone on the other hand is 100% the thing to do, even if they're running out of tether range because the slow guarantees your sped up tentacle hits.

I never even dreamed of Pekin playing Illaoi. But here we are, and I'm glad

Hi, Illaoi is one of my most played champs. You max E into losing matchups and Q into "winning" matchups. Against anything that can bully you early on you want to minimize your E cooldown because that's their opportunity to all in you. In a lot of bad matchups you can't even step up without your E. Q max is good against slow champs with big hitboxes aka tanks and juggernauts.

Diamond Illaoi OTP here, you max E into melees, max Q into ranged, the logic here is that E is better to max but since you can't hit E against ranged champions since they poke you while staying behind their CS you simply max Q, allowing you to last hit CS more easily and also poking the ranged champion that is staying in his wave

@@blitzhill9533 I wasn't really thinking about ranged matchups because I usually don't blind Illaoi. Mobile melee champs like renekton and similar champs that just dash around you are the worst matchups that I'm willing to play and you definetly want to max E against those. Against AP ranged tops your argument sounds valid, against ADC top players not so much, especially against akshan or vayne. Tbh if they pick one of those into Illaoi I'd just dodge. If I were to play it out I'd probably rush iceborn + tabis and sit back under my turret until I have those. I don't think they should allow you to permashove. Once you use your Q on the wave and it pushes to their side of lane they'll want to step up and either try to freeze the lane or all in you/go for an extended trade. I'd rather have better all in especially once I finish my item. I'm not a fan of Q max unless you know it's a matchup where probably either side won't get too much done aka tanks mostly. Since you need to poke them out heavily before attempting an all in and you can get free platings I think maxing Q into tanks is best. All of this are ofc just my thoughts and preferences.

11:11 illaoi E will execute the enemy if theyre lower health than the effigy or whatever its called, it doesnt have to be much lower either, less than a hundred health difference will still execute them, unless they changed that during this illaoi buff

59:20 Juggs somehow tend to be _less_ degenerate when ahead than mobile bruisers, as you can always choose to stand away and isolate them. An Irelia just decides to be exactly where you stand and kill you in two Qs and an auto.

In the first game, the 5/8/5 Ez going GGEZ at the end. Yah sure buddy, it was easy for you and you weren't carried at all.

Have you ever tried this Illaoi build where you start tear and go gauntlet into fimbulwinter, so everytime you slow (sheen auto of the gauntlet) you get a shield? You still need either cleaver or sundered sky first, so it needs three items but it solves the mana issues and the constant shielding is kinda cool

As an ability, P is considered one for effects affecting them, but the numbers themselves may often be counted in a way that most other effects don't (for example, damage being classified as default damage). Classic Riot. On Illaoi/Shojin interaction I'm not 100% certain, as Illaoi's P summons are an innate ability (a thing shared only with Zyra AFAIR) and the tentacles themselves deal ability damage(spellAoE). So in theory it should, but as "champion ability damage" is such a rarely used and inconsistently written platter of spaghetti, dunno. If Muramana is ever built on Illaoi, it probably works.

Pekin, what are your thoughts on first strike on illaoi? Since the ghost from E counts as a champion, first strike should work on it, and even if not, you still deal damage to the real champion, so you'd still get some worth from it. Or is it completely dogshit?

Illaoi mid is my go to Yone counter. I haven't ever lost the match up

Yeah Pekin E max or Q max is really just how do you prefer to play, if you can easily hit E you get more out of Q max first

If the person was low and the vessel is low you could try to quickly hit it to proc it to get off a slow and cause tentacles to spawn

Also the vessel won’t dodge the tentacles whereas the champ might move out of the way, if they’re standing on top of the vessel tho W’ing the champ can be a good way to hit both

My thinking with E max vs Q max first is that E will only really get value if I'm consistently landing the E. I max it against more immobile champs or if I just get in the zone and land them more often than not. Against something with a lot of dashes or something I can't fight easily Q max gives waveclear and tends to land easier regardless. Curious what other people think though.

Per DirtyMobs who's a challenger illaoi player. He stated that q max is good against ranged champs or tanky champs that you can't kill the spirit fast enough. But other than that it's preference.

Unless they fixed it, E max is just better. Q max makes it cost more (less spammable) and used to make the damage go up by VERY little. The only reason to go Q max is if you can never land an E. Again, unless they fixed it. Never use ult unless it's a guaranteed kill+. I used to only use it when it got two kills or saved my life and got a kill. She's weak because her counter has always been dashes, executes, and hard cc. And now every champ has ten dashes, an execute, and two CC abilities...

Iceborn got nerfed so hard the slow is not even strong enough to guarantee a slow anymore. Illaoi mains seem to think it's not a viable rush item anymore, better to go for something with some AD. Can still be built late game tho
