The Japanese used a supercharger ducting system similar to the P47. The air inlets are behind the cockpit.

Now all we need is the Ki 87 with that supercharger sticking out the side of the engine cowling

This plane gives me a similar vibe to the late-war Griffon-engined Spitfires: a platform pushed to the absolute limit as the conflict escalates to its conclusion...
