    0:50 Not only was Tobruk the largest port near Egypt, it was also notorious for having the laggiest ships this side of the Mediterranean.

    Not forgotten by everyone in the UK. The Aussies and Kiwis fought with great courage and determination. They stood with us from the start and were there at the end. Your armed forces are a credit to your countries, remember them with the pride they deserve :)

    Brings back some memories for me as a kid growing up. My Uncle Derek (wasn't a blood uncle but super close family friend). He was a "Cooper" by trade but was also a desert rat! My uncle Alf (Mums brother) was in the RAF in the Desert campaign and was an armourer. My dad and his brother "Tommy" were both RN and served al over the place! They both did Mediterranean convoys and also stints on the Arctic convoys. Luckily they all survived and would often tell a few stories once the ALE had been flowing for a while at family do's. Sadly they are no longer with us as even time catches up with the survivors. Hard men all of them but the nicest people you could ever meet.

    Great video as always Taff. This one has bit of a personal note though. I had a great uncle who was a Rat of Tobruk. He was in the 9th Division Ack-Ack so was probably one of those gunners guiding Taff onto the last Junkers so to speak. he died before my time but my granddad always said he complained that the standard ring-and-bead gunsights on their guns were useless at tracking a target faster than about 250 m.p.h. When he got back home in early 1943 he and my granddad (who was an engineer at Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation) devised an imporved sight that was - I am told - effective on aircraft up to supersonic speed. They submitted the design but unfortunately by the time it was adopted radar aiming was in so it wasn't needed but it seems to have seen some service as an auxiliary backup and you can see them on a number of Bofors guns at RSL memorials around Australia.

    Remember the South African Maramduke “Pat” Pattle. Probably the highest scoring allied pilot in the Mediterranean/African Theatres. And a first class Gladiator Pilot. His method was to fire a short burst and rupture a fuel tank, then wait for the fuel to leak then fire another short burst and wooomph. That’s what I read anyway. Top Scoring Aces of the RAF no longer in print is a superb book. If you can get hold of a copy.

    The difference in diameter is +50% BUT the circular area is over 100%, that's double the weight alone. Then if the bullets are in proportion, the .50 must be 50% longer as well. This adds up to a .5 being three times the weight of a .303. Three times the size is a huge increase in damage, no wonder the P51's did well!

    ya as JG4_DUI says you can start a reply track recording and then post the mission load it up and record some external views, feels very old and clucky by todays replay functions and as stated some times its a little odd for example the Ju88 was running on 1 engine although in the external track it looks like both are packing up. Apart from that its a great sim to play around in

    If the Gladiator had some slightly more powerful armament, it would make a very effective straggler-slayer. Low stall speed means you can more easily match the slow speed of a struggling plane and keep on it to focus fire, as well as the high lift provided by the bi-wing design letting you pull away before you slam into the plane.

  • @richardarcher7177

    @richardarcher7177

    2 жыл бұрын

    Apparently the weak armament was why it was withdrawn from service. In 1941 the RAF in the desert was chronically short of planes but the Glad's measly four guns made it a toothless tiger so hardly worth using. the Italian CR.42's twin 12.7mm on the other hand were more than up to chewing up Blenheims.
