IKEA Ivar hack: DIY Floating Cabinet Project Recap. (Pinterest fail or nailed it?)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We turned two 12" Ikea cabinets into a floating credenze for our kitchen coffee nook. Decide for yourself whether or not I failed it or nailed it with this DIY project. I show you some of the most critical aspects of this build that turn it from a good DIY hack into a great build. If you have any questions or thoughts on this please post a comment. Enjoy!

Assuming you have wooden 2/4 walls, cabinet screws at least 2 1/2" would probably work, assuming you're hitting the studs. If you use drywall anchors make sure you're using enough anchors spaced out along the cabinet's length and also anchor rated to hold weight, like a toggle anchor or a hollow-wall anchor that expands behind the drywall. If you don't want to use cabinet screws (which are flat where the head meets the shaft), you can use tapered head wood screws with an appropriately sized finish washer. I wouldn't use anything smaller than a #8 screw, and would try not to use anything larger than a #10 screw. The furring strip behind the back panel, mounted to the studs, will give you lots of places to affix the cabinet using shorter screws. There's more than one way to do it, but however you choose to affix it just make sure you're securely anchoring the cabinet to the wall in multiple places

Is the cabinet flush up against the wall or is there a gap, due to the space created by the furring strips? If so, how did you compensate the gap to make it flush and/or what size furring strips did you use? Thanks in advance

It’s flush. The furring strips were cut to the same thickness as the gap between the cabinet frame back and hardboard backer groove.

Thanks a lot for this video. IVAR hacks are so popular but finding specific instructions is so difficult. I purchased a 30cm deep IVAR and the back panel is cardboard. I am not sure if putting screws through it will provide much support. Did you change the back panel to something else? I have a concrete wall so thinking of installing couple of 20cm L brackets and resting the cabinet on them. Any feedback of this approach? Any idea if I should put the L brackets for base or side walls? Thanks :)

L brackets would probably work as long as they are rated for the weight. The walls of the cabinet bear the weight, but a bracket that supports the bottom of the sides and the bottom of the base would probably be best. I replaced the back with hardboard, painted white. The thickness was approximately 3mm (1/8 inch).

@@tbvince1 I removed the back panel as I had some electrical sockets that I wanted to use. I used small L brackets on the bottom board and it's holding up well so far. Most of the weight goes on the bar under the top board.

What would you do for the 20" deep IVAR cabinets?

  • @lifeofhighley225

I’d do pretty much the same thing, just making sure the top of the cabinet was very securely attached to the wall studs. The extra 8” will cause more force pulling on those fasteners, so a furring strip and strong screws is highly recommended: drywall anchors probably wouldn’t be enough to hold either cabinet for very long

Hi, which top did you use? From IKEA or did you cut it yourself?

  • @lifeofhighley225

It’s aspen, cut to size from a board bought at Menards. I think a 12”x 8’ board is what I used, trimmed to fit. I coated it with matte polycrylic to seal it without having the color darken.

Did you just use a box cutter to cut out for outlets?

  • @lifeofhighley225

The back is 1/8” thick white hardboard, a bit too stiff for me to comfortably cut with a box cutter. I took very careful measurements, marking on the back side of the cabinets and then used an oscillating multi-tool for the cutouts
