Ignition FULL EPISODE | 2018 McLaren 720S: Faster than a P1 AND Porsche 918 Spyder?-Episode 189
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On this episode of Ignition presented by Tire Rack, we take McLaren’s newest supercar and find out if it eclipses the super sophisticated, incredibly expensive hybrid hypercars of just a few years ago. To do that, Jethro Bovingdon first experiences it on the public road and then takes it to Willow Springs to see if it can beat the Porsche 918 Spyder’s scintillating lap record. So can the 720S stand toe-to-toe with P1, 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari and set a new performance benchmark? Watch and find out.

Lol I was gonna say something with the same point but then scrolled down to the FIRST comment and it made my point! RIP motortrend you will be remembered but not well, please don't take the legacy of top gear with you to the trash bin. Nobody prefers your content more than a 15000K sub youtuber, it's only cuz you have the cars... for now. Good home greedy snakes! And please tell your exec's to f*** off because they are wasting money on top gear rights to launch a streaming platform that NOBODY believes will work when they could just hire someone who people like want to watch. What a fall from domination motortrend. 😢

Motortends 720S stats: 0-60 2.5 seconds, 0-100 5.3 seconds, 0-100-0 8.8 seconds, 1/4 mile 10.1 seconds at 141.5mph, figure-eight course time 22.3 seconds and 1.05g, maximum lateral acceleration 1.09g. It's funny, they put a big asterisk next to the LaFerraris times because they are very suspect and were done at Ferraris own track on a downhill section. This is why Motortrend always state that the McLaren P1 is the quickest non-asterisked car the have ever tested with a quarter mile time of 9.8 seconds at 148.9mph.

Yes, as a benchmark most of the others should leave way behind: take electric motors 'assistance', four wheel steering, torque-vectoring and all the other stuff - and you get still beaten by a two-wheel-drive-four-rubber-car? Wonderful achivement, good promo-video - the rest should be homework for anybody. And what If the car was just not doing well with the other tires, they where available, but just not too good with this chassis? So they did not arrieve? Anyway, on accuratky selected, of course preheated slicks and with a young F1 driver behind the wheel, we would like to see all cars today repeated (this Willow track seems to have deterioated a lot during the last years as well.)

@@edjack1993 i don't care what model they use. Im just pointing out the facts. Their content is ok. But, there are many channels out there better in my opinion. It's not always about super mtv style production and what not. The simple fact is i used to always watch mt video's. They put up a pay wall, and well, i don't care. Not going to pay them. Btw, the fact that they are releasing "free" videos kinda shows that they are not doing so well...at least that's the word on the street. They have too many competitors and rivals putting up videos on toutube. The content is not that fantastic to pay more for. Shame really.

Eddie Jack ad revenue and sponsorship opportunities should give them more than enough profit money. Look how many successful youtubers there are. Selling your content to a popular streaming service like Netflix is one thing, selling it on a standalone platform for the same price as Netflix is another.

I always have to remind myself that the 720S is just the "base" model in the McLaren Super series; more focused on looks, driver involvement, comfort, practicality and performance. And yet despite that, while running on corsa's, this thing smashed the 918. I can't imagine how quick the track focused LT model is going to be.

This car makes me smile. It reminds me of the McLaren F1 in that it even beats cars that are more expensive. It looks great in blue and seems fast enough for even randy. He always wishes for more power but, not this time. Cheers mclaren for building the best all around sports car that money can buy.

Curious corner speeds: Low 90s around T2- I used to do that when my 2001 Viper had stock 450hp, on streets. Not too impressed there... Turn 8, 130-ish mph- Right, that's not difficult for an old Viper. I don't remember my speeds from the other corners, but I *can* say, the Mclarens' 170mph down the front straight is outrageously fast! Despite a tame 92 in T2 and sorta casual 130 in T8, Randy still found over 10 seconds a lap over me!
I love Ignition and Head2Head. I was an early paying subscriber for years, but cancelled a few months ago because I do all my streaming and channel management here on YT-I really never used my subscription. I wouldn’t mind using the MT app if it did offline downloads, but waited too long for MT to develop it. Watching on their site is a non-starter. I hope they can figure out some kind of model that financially works for them-maybe YT Channel Membership or something like that. The production quality of MT costs a significant amount of money that can’t be reliably made on YT, so I get it. I miss Ignition and Head2Head, but as other commenters have said, there’s a lot of great car content on YT today.
I guess I'll have to wait another year for the free episode where they drive the Senna
My choice would be the McLaren if I had the coin. I've driven other super cars, but never the McLaren.
Was this filmed on Redwood Road?? Looks so familiar...
15:02 - did I hear the typical McLaren "ding ding ding" warning sound?
Magnificent lap @ Willow Spings: but what about the tyres?
@ 6:50 one of the concerning things about McLaren is the potential build quality issues. That door anting to come open is one of those. Just enough flex to give me pause. This coming from a Viper owner, however I think my GenV overall is tighter built.

This episode is from last year...those cars weren't available for testing yet at that time.
Love this video! Would I be right in thinking it was filmed a while ago because I'm surprised its the first time Jethro has been in a 720s? Aslo, can't get my head around why there are so many negative comments about Motortrend's decision to go behind a pay wall.... They decided to opt for that particular model, which is any organisation's right, and its our decision whether to pay for the content or not. Looking at the production quality of this video I think it would be hard to financially justify a free service. Nobody is putting a metaphorical gun to our heads to pay for the content. I haven't signed up to their website and thats the choice I made without the need of complaining about it.
The depreciation curve on these cars kills it for me. As a former McLaren owner and someone that had an early deposit on a 720 spider, I just can't get over the hit they take. Moreover, the reliability is hit or miss. The last time I shipped mine off for an oil change, it came back with a coolant leak. Literally, no miles added...straight off the truck with a leak. So, back down the road it went. The repairs were covered under warranty, but the $5K in transport costs weren't. If you're going to buy a new McLaren there are two important factors to consider: 1) Unless you live very near a really good size dealer, shipping cars for service is a PITA. While this isn't unique to McLaren, it may be more frustrating because reliability issues may make it more common than other exotics. 2) The pace of new model development at McLaren means that every time you turn around, something new gets launched. Thus, owners quickly shed their one year old dinosaurs, flooding the market with used cars at huge losses. It certainly helps the buyer in the secondary market, but prospective consumers of new cars should have their head examined. A friend and I both calculated that it was costing nearly $40.00/mile to drive our McLaren's. We're both very fortunate to afford expensive things, but at some point, you're left asking if the dollar-to-fun ratio is too far out of balance? Especially on the street. And, let's be honest, at the performance level these cars are at, tracking them without a cage is the definition of insanity.
