FMA/B definitely has a nostalgic factor, but I wouldn't call it just another shounen similar to Naruto. It was an incredibly accessible series, had a really tight and well-told story with a great conclusion, an amazing dub, an awesome adaptation, and while I wouldn't put it at #1, I do think it sets itself apart from a lot of its peers both before and after it.

If we are talking about sheer legacy, not having Sailor Moon, or even Japan's most iconic ones like Doraemon or Sazae-san, which are family favorites, clearly shows that this list is based on the ones more popular with Western audiences. I think their last criteria of just how much they loved the series at IGN comes into play the most here. But then the series that they did pick have a lot of artistic merit, as Joey pointed out.

To say FMAB is just another Shounen series is a crime. To me it feels like one of, if not the, best gateway anime. Like if you show someone FMAB who has never seen anime or never been "an anime fan" they're very likely to be hooked on the series. The storytelling is crisp, the action is hot, and it takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. And it's VERY accessible at only 64 episode. It doesn't feel like a huge undertaking to watch.

It's definitely more mature in a lot of ways than a lot of seinen. It even breaks a lot of shonen tropes: as an example, Edward does become stronger (better prosthetic, training) but there really isn't any "power level" in FMA.

However I think its actually impossible to make a top 10 list without being subjective and biased. Honestly they needed to put FMA Brotherhood in 1 or 2 or they'd actually get cancelled. But I was also hoping for Akira as well. Also low key I didn't enjoy Bebop as much? 10000% it had such a massive influence but I think the pacing of the story doesn't hold up as well to today's standards.

Xenogears being similar to eva most likely comes from the the fact that they were both influenced by similar media and ideas popular in 80s-90s japan at the time rather than contributing all of those similarities to it being directly inspired by eva (though there probably are some direct influences from eva, my point isn't that it doesn't have any, i am just saying not ALL of it is eva). For example, things like: Space battleship yamato, mobile suit gundam (especially g gundam in xenogears) SDF macross, space runaway ideon, ultraman, nausicaä of the valley of the wind (even more apparent in the manga version), 2001: a space odyssey, childhood's end (book). And as i said in that time period in japan esotericism, mysticism, magick, psychoanalysis etc. were really popular. So both of them directly took inspiration from kabbalah/jewish mysticism, gnosticism, ideas of freud (and neo freudian thinkers like lacan) and jung et al. Also Xenogears >>> Evangelion >>> Eureka seven >>> Gasaraki >>> Rahxephon >>> Fafner >>> Darling in the franxx If we are comparing eva to other mecha series that people call as being eva copies.

I can basically explain why FMAB is considered the best anime ever made, because for anime to be good it must meet these criteria: Story Characters / character development Animation World building Voice acting Creativity / originality Balance Ending Pacing Consistency Foreshadowing No exposition dumps No fillers/flashbacks/recaps No plot holes Censored or uncensored Fanservice or no fanservice How well does it follow the source material like manga? Is there bad arcs? Does it have flaws? Is the anime repetitive? How well does it age? Things like Art style, Enjoyment, Genres, Music, Themes these are subjective things so you can still judge based on them but should not be the main focus of judging an anime. Now I can truely say that FMAB is the only anime in history that basically meets every single one of these criteria...It's even rare to find anime with good story, characters and animation all 3 in 1. There really isn't all that many anime that do all 3 of those well. Let alone all of the criteria I mentioned. FMAB deserves it's title as the best because from a non biased perspective, it is the only anime that has every single element needed to make anime great

@@GrowingDownUnder I call this the straight A's vs the Single S dilemma. While I consider FMAB to have A in all of the categories mentioned above I know there are series that have "S" scoring in more than one of those, while have Bs or Cs in others. I think AOT had a better excecution as an adaptation than FMAB, and I had to rewatch parts of FMAB to confirm this. The series hasn't aged as well in certain animation and excecution aspects, but it is still an A. Sidenote, did you know Arakawa herself is a big fan of Legend of the galactic heroes? it makes sense considering both have such a big cast of well developed characters. That is a series that has several Ss that makes it worth it, while having other Ds and even Fs like animation sadly

Levi is only cool because he's edgy and strong, but he's a pretty badly written character if i'm being honest. He got a little bit of backstory but barely enough to call him well written. Eren is well written, but as a character he's trash and unlikeable, also crybaby most the series. AOT had bad arcs too like part 3 and final season part 1. Too much politics and it got pretty bad actually, i'd say big inconsistency there especially changing studios having inconsistency with animation too LOTGH is an F tier anime, because it's fail it's trash. No good characters, boring story, boring politics, repetitive, outdated anime that aged extremely badly, etc...

Ngl, I’m not mad about this top ten ten being topped off by Brotherhood. I think it’s how well balanced the series is, just how intentional every moment we’re shown is from start to finish. Even with how much I adore Yu Yu Hakusho, there were definitely things it could have done. I don’t think FMA Brotherhood was a lot of people’s first anime, but it was definitely the first shounen series I saw that wasn’t all about martial arts & fisticuffs. This top ten definitely got me more interested in seeing what the top 25 list looks like, given they didn’t include a shoujo series in the top ten contenders.

To say YuYu Hakusho or HunterxHunter have had a bigger impact to the GENERAL anime community over FMA is insane. There are people who don't watch any anime whatsoever, that have still seen and enjoyed FMA. There's a reason it's the gateway anime most people choose to show their friends and that's because it is one of the most complete packages ever. Characters are well defined and likable, story is succinct and to the point, with clear goals, crescendos and moments of calm and the animation is superb. Trying to downplay its significance comes off as very contrarion. It's almost universally at the top of most top 10's for a reason. It's not my absolute favorite anime, but it's definitely way up there. It's also obvious why it would be most people's favorite.

Madoka Magica is wildly overrated in terms of "impact." What it did was introduce a bunch of people to magical girl shows who had very opinionated views of what they were, but very little experience in the actual genre. Had they watched predecessors like Princess Tutu or Kaitou Jeanne, they'd realize that Madoka Magica is really just a popular but otherwise straight take on the more dour side of magical girl shows. Excellent execution, but people mistaken it for being NGE when it was really closer to Eureka Seven. If we are talking magical girl genre, candidates like Sailor Moon or Cutie Honey probably deserve it more. Hell, I'd even go to Cardcaptor Sakura before giving the prize to Madoka Magica. This same effect of "newbies with strong opinions and little experience" happened to isekai shows as well, which used to feature some pretty heartwrenching premises, a lot of female MCs, and rather complex, built up worlds. Then SAO (and just narou-kei) came along and rewrote what isekai meant, and now everyone is drowning in mediocrity crying about how isekai as a genre sucks, when the real solution is to just watch older shows for "darker themes." Re:Zero is fine for what it is, but it isn't really a revolutionary step for having suffering, nor is Mushoku Tensei really special for emotional distress. Both of these actually represent what the genre moved away from, as shows like Now and Then, Here and There or Twelve Kingdoms very much play up how the new world is not convenient and how easy it is to blame the world for your own problems. These genres aren't what the newcomers think they are. Magical girl shows have been doing hard emotional turmoil since the 90s. Isekai shows did character growth and dark premises since the 80s. Go back and watch the classics. Please.

Joey, I appreciate you taking the time to do the list. I think what makes FMA:Brotherhood different is the much darker nature of the series and the Ray of hope it provides for the entire cast of characters and the audience. But the biggest problem is that as you mentioned earlier, anime has a 70+ year history and it is wildly difficult to riddle that down to 25. Kudos to you brother.

(I started writing this before the end of the video) I think what's getting me about this list is that there's no shoujo, romance, or slice of life stuff. No Sailor Moon, no Fruits Basket, no Clannad. Utena, Ouran, His and Her Circumstances. And not to mention other well-known series like Trigun, Inuyasha, Naruto, Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, etc. I think lists like these, "The Best Anime" or "The Most Influential Anime" or whatever you want to call them can just never be accurate no matter who makes them because this is so subjective. And as a personal sidenote: I get irrationally mad when people mention FMAB without mentioning the 2003 series. Did it follow the manga's end? No, of course it didn't, the ending hadn't been written yet and Arakawa told them she approved of their ending. But was it good? Hell yeah it was, and it has concepts in it that I think are actually way cooler than Brotherhood. Edited to add: Gintama, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Berserk, Gundam
