This is amazing! How were you able to figure out so much, out of one little poem? Do you mind sharing with us, ways we can analyse a poem and attain good marks?

Hi Edward! Just wondering how Wordsworth conveys the sense of joy in the poem Composed upon Westminster Bridge. Thanks!

There's bold statements such as the opening line. He's very much emphasising the majesty he's viewing. You don't go out on a limb without there being something worth being so bold about. Little phrases such as "Dear God!" really exclaim his joy. Semantic fields of beauty ("Fair", "Majesty", "Beauty", "Splendour" contrasted with "Dull" for those who would pass by) are strewn throughout the poem to maintain the tone he's creating. It's also useful to look past the words themselves and just think about the idea. That's the main aim of literature, what is the idea and how is it shown? Here he's discussing the industrial revolution, the very antithesis of most Romantic Poetry and so it's a brave move that must be spurred on by something spectacular. He's flipped a lot of contemporary ideas on their head by choosing such a subject matter and therefore the contrast between what we know is reality and what the speaker is seeing further conveys his joyous sentiment. Hope this helps!
