Really liked the zen Dac v2 combined with Zen Can. Good sounding, plenty of power if you link them balanced and super convenient for starters in the hobby. This was my entry level stack and I still occasionally use it to this day. IFI seem to be staying with their winning formula but to be honest, I would have liked to see a new direction. If you have V1 or V2 then not much to see here, But if you don't, then this unit is a big recommendation. Thanks as always Paul.!!!

Yes, I see people asking on Reddit if there will be another Can or what is going to be the upgraded stack. On its own, not bad, but I think the stack is a bigger bump and apparently others are waiting to see an improved model there as well. Not sure what their plan is as they said nothing so far on Reddit.

Nice to see the USB-C, but the price hike ( $30 more to $229 ) seems excessive for what it is. I do think people liked the Burr-Brown hardware, and XBass+.

Yes, that is going to be the main complaint, a price bump without much of a change in hardware.

I have an old zen amp, thinking about getting the dac 3 to push my hd800s for gaming and the casual movies, and music. Thoughts?

As I said, it is a casual desktop box. If you want to listen more seriously, I'd take one of their other dac/amps. It is on the warmer side of the products I have heard which is either a bonus or going to bother you for detailed music listening.

I have the Zen Dac Signature v2 and feel it's necessary to mention that i downloaded the firmware version 7.3b, which made the sound signature smoother vs. the stock firmware it came with. This can be done with all ifi zen dacs, each firmware version adding their own flavor.

...and just because it's smoother, it doesn't make it less for audiophiles. I'd rather not listen to flat, bland, and bright audio, making it seem "technical".

True, I avoided flat/soulless dac/amps for a long time and then I tried one. There is a place for that just as there is for the smoother, warmer sounds. As I said, audiophile or not, if you are listening for most the day, that smoother sound works perfectly as a non-distraction. I don't mind having both sources as a lot of affordable IEMs could use some smoothing out.

@@yugao2 I've heard of people having problems with the firmware updates. It happened to me a couple times. I just reinstalled and it worked fine.

How was this compare to fiio k7 especially for the balanced output?

Almost opposite sounds. iFi goes for the weightier smoother sound, K7 went lighter in weight, faster. One of those should appeal to you more than the other or neither. I like neutral so I prefer neither one. Colored amps are hard, you have to really have a preference as it is going to change the sound of your sets.

@@sergey7298 its a complete All In One, and have nice feedback accross community, it would be a good addition in the chain if you already have a good amp or planning to get one. Having pre amp capabilities and bluetooth is good for a chian. I personally don't like burr brown dacs. Until unless they are paired with a good amp they don't sound that good in comparison with competition.
