IFAW Orphan Bear Rescue Project - Russia

IFAW's Bear Rescue Center, located 350km northwest of Moscow, rescues orphan baby bears, and then cares for them until they are old enough to be released back to the forest. This video shows the steps the bears go through as they grow up and learn the skills they need to survive in the wild.

Dr. Pazhetnov who founded this project is a famous russian biologist dedicated all his life to learning bears. Many years ago he discovered that the bear cubs has many skills in their genetic f.e. building a den. It means they need warm, food, protection when they are small. In the beginning they are kept in closed enclosure in the forest, so that another adult bears can't kill them. After they can climb trees the enclosure remans open. The bears can go walking in the forest. They get less and less food from people. Only when the bears has grown enough they go in wild. Very important that the people has always less contact to bears. They dont play with them, it's prohibited. The bears never hear human voices. The stuff is coming always in the same dark clothes. The bear should in NO WAY feel attached to people, otherwise they will come to villages instead of getting food in forest. It is very succesful methods that resqued more than hundred bears at the moment.

Eunice Jury Most of these little ones are abondened by their mothers. Bear 🐻 moms have usually 3-5 cubs, but only few make it. When in danger, the bear mom will sometimes run away and either leave behind her litter (to survive and make sure she can produce more babies in the future to save the species), or she will escape with the strongest one. But bears 🐻 in Russia are Born during winter, and when mom has run away the babies will freeze to death within hours. So when people find abondened bear cubs in the wild, it is likely that mom got scared because of hunters, people, cars etc. Than people will collect the cubs and bring them to the bear rescue center to save them
