If your garden is looking BAD after winter, FIX IT!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's video, I replace the soil above the french drain so that there are just stones. This is a job that I've been meaning to get around to for a while now, and it's about time I sorted it!

Refreshingly honest. You make mistakes like the rest of us. At no point do you ever pretend you know it all. However you do get great results. For that reason i love watching your videos 😃

From my own mistakes I’d recommend some sort of stone bond/glue mate. Keeps them looking clean and don’t have to worry about trimmings from grass etc going all in the stones when you mow or edge. Can just blow it off with blower without having to worry about dirt in stones!

Great Job. looks nice and smart, it's getting expensive buying stone these days so well done for recycling the old stuff, some nice terracotta planters would look well if the budget can run to it

Nice one! 👍🏼 I’m sure you have already but look into plants that will tolerate shade a little more perhaps on the right hand side. They might take a little better. Just wanted to ask, how are your sleeper walls and steps faring after a few years? Are they still pretty solid and do you treat them regularly?

We’ve got a few plans for shade tolerate plants. Really want to soften the brick with them this year! Walk is doing great, solid as the first day 👍🏻 Treat it every year with a wood treatment. Long may it last 🙏

Looking really good. Whats the plan with the grass? It looks like the top soil is very heavy. My front lawn has those issues but hasn't thinned too much and only in a few areas. I'm digging it all out to a good depth and replacing with 50/50 top dressing mixed with loam so even when wet there will be no compaction or clumping. I had plants that have died in the past and since planting with sandy loams I have never had any die. I'm treat the grass the same way now as I can't see there ever being any improvement otheraise. I tried dense aerating and filling with sand but It all mixes in and is now unoticable.

Going to aerate and top dress with a 70/30 mix at the end of March. It’s been great for a couple of years, but the relentless rajn we’ve had has pushed it a bit too far!

Did you put some landscape fabric under the new limestone chippings ? I would get some nice terracota pots and not plastic ones.

I didn’t, mainly because the French drain is under there with fabric already

Are you tempted to top-up the stones on the upper level?

Yep, will top them up around the patio. Going to improve the soil for the hedges too and add compost - not going to stone over them going forward
