'If you were born on the day the Metro was meant to open, you'd be able to vote by the time it does'
Kieran Cuddihy looks back on the timeline of Dublin's planned Metro.
Dublin needs a MetroLink that should have been completed by now, according to several Lunchtime Live callers.
An Bord Pleanála is hearing discussions and examinations of issues surrounding the transport project over the next five weeks.
One issue that may arise is whether a new connection from the city to Dublin Airport is even necessary.
Miten told Lunchtime Live he thinks the MetroLink simply has to happen.
"The question we've been asking is, 'Is it worth it?' but I think we need to ask the question, 'Is it worth it not to do it?" he said.
"I live in south Dublin and I find it difficult to get to the airport.
"It still takes at least 45 minutes to an hour so it's just too long.
"I could easily take the DART into Tara Street and get the MetroLink into the airport, and that'd be much easier.
"They're saying 53 million passengers in the first year, that's only going to grow.
"I think you have to ask the question can we afford not do it?"
Another caller David told the show the project should be even more ambitious.
"If you're going to put some of this underground, I'd be saying get the boring machine and dig your tunnel out as far as Swords," he said.
"Don't take that away, let's start - for example - tunneling alongside the M50.
"So that we have four exit points for the south, west, north and the mid-east going off an underground tunnel to bring traffic off the M50 underground.
"We just don't do these big projects; the Government could and should make a cross-Government decision in the morning [to do this] and set up a body, not for profit, that says, 'We will deliver this'".

The metro really is the modern version of sinking the Shannon.
Failure everywhere, transport, health system disaster, housing crisis, lack of schools in some region, immigration out of control. We just need a big food supply crisis and we will have a strike. Now is the Metro a priority? Why not improving, extending Luas? Why building a Metro for a city which will be floaded soon if nothing is done on that aspect. I would more invest in a crash course in Netherland on that matter!
Please please dont start building anymore state projects until we can hire people to manage them.

@@FiremanSimon It could be a lot better and the metro project is a fiasco at this stage but there are plenty of other places that are worse. Granted public transport in particular leaves quite a bit to be desired.
Why does the government keep talking about the metro.Its never going to happen.
Quarter of a century?? I'm old enough to remember the old CIE proposing such a scheme back in 1971! "No modern capital city should be without a rail link to its airport" and "We need an underground link between Connolly and Heuston stations" and how about "No EEC (Old name for the EU) capital city should be without an underground". I've long since learned that 'announcements' are not the same as actually doing, and to ignore them.
Vote Cleo and his cronies out . We need a change and it's up to us to make that change.

I agree we need a metro but in a city which is closest to our biggest trading partners..the European Union..and as all capital cities should recognise where their bread is buttered..Dublin is no longer that city bring the once gateway to the affluent British markets..which sre now looking unattractive for most... modern politics is all about assisting Dublin with that denial... Dublin will be deserted by 2050..bless them !😊

The metro is a waste of time, the luas goes out to cabra why not extend it to the airport, most European airports have either train links or tram links to the cities, Edinburgh, Amsterdam London and Newcastle Airport all have a rail or tram link,the Edinburgh tram system is excellent by the way from the airport right onto prince's Street and if Ireland are playing Scotland at Murrayfield the tram stops right outside the stadium, the dart does stop outside lansdown Road which is good but it doesn't half cause a backlog, the metro north fiasco is costing way too much
We don't need a Metro ...there are viable cheaper alternatives ....we are the fools we vote party lines no matter how foolish and empty the promises.
Like everything in this joke of a country it will be disaster. We literally cannot do anything on a big scale. It will be done by 2050 and be the most expensive metro line every built and most likely won't work half the time. Spend the billions on housing, hospitals and prison....things we actually need. Vote these people out!
We could do with that money here in limerick, traitors
