My favourite exercise is getting a click track that counts in a bar and then leaves three or four more bars without a click, you then play something and try and land exactly on the first beat at the beginning of the first bar. It's a great way to practice staying at a steady tempo.

@@eliwirth1938 I'm using an app called 'metronome beats' on my phone which lets you mute certain beats. I set it to 16 and only make the first four or so audible. If you'd rather practice to a drum beat you can look up 'victor wooten drum exercise' on youtube and you'll get a track which starts out omitting an occasional beat, then a bar and then several bars, that one's good because it eases you into the exercise and gets progressively harder.

@@eliwirth1938 it's actually super achievable on a computer if you have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) Set your tempo, create a midi track and DIY you're own little metronome with a kick or snare sample!

I won't do this... I am afraid of the result...
“unique to you” is so key. so many musicians don’t even have this as a goal. creation instead of regurgitation! well said.
This is my favourite guitar channel. I'd like to thank you for being concise. You don't repeat yourself, or babble on; you get to the point quickly, and clearly, and move on to the next. Thank you!
Man, where was this video 15 years ago when I first picked up a guitar lol These are great exercises
This vid is a gem. Even with my experience, this is a simple mindset to tackle really progressive practice sessions. Great stuff man!
Very cool. Love that Firebird too! Love 3 p90s.
"How do I practice guitar?" is probably the most common question I get as a teacher. These are brilliant exercises that I'll be sure to incorporate into my lessons from now on. Great video as always, thanks so much
Thanks so much for videos like these!
Playing the 2 and 4 is funny from a bluegrass perspective because we naturally only play the metronome on beats 1 and 3 otherwise we have to deal with stuff at like 240 BPM which is just impossible to internalize
Great exercises, really for any musician!
Great stuff thanks for this!
Dude, what an incredibly helpful video!!! I'll pass this on to my students :)
love content like this from you
That's an amazing guitar, looking at it, it has to be one of the best in the world!!
Excellent tips. Very useful and practical
great advice. playing “simple” riffs that are on the beat is a great start. your bandmates will love you
Sammy G comin in clutch with exactly what I'm looking for right when I need it. ❤ U and your crew.
Thanks Sammy!
So great to hear another guitarist referring to Mary Had a Little Lamb by the GOAT! That was the first SRV I learned and really got me started on my guitar journey. My dad had to bribe 11yr old me to learn SRV, I was all about Green Day back then, the Dookie album.
that metronome exercise is amazing
The last exercise is what I've been doing for a long time really. Albeit subconsciously. When I first learnt the comfortably numb outro solo, the bend lick Gilmour does at the end of each phrase of the solo really caught my attention and I started incorporating it in my improvs. Was particularly happy when one day someone actually recognised it off some random piece I played in a jamming session and asked if it was the Gilmour lick. So yeah. The third exercise is really a very enriching experience.
Thanks bro 🔥
Dude! Thank you for this! I'm definitely saving this. I've been playing guitar for 25 years, but I never took lessons. I bought your first 3 online lessons, but I don't go through them enough. Thanks for what you do! Keep up the great work.
super interesting and useful
Thanks so much for sharing. A suggestion could be a video on starting out in sight reading while playing guitar.
Awesome guitar!
I love it😊
Good lesson. Also, love the t shirt.
Killer video!!
I really like your videos 😊
This will probably help
I have two notes on the circle exercise for beginners, since I myself did the opposite for a while and suffered from it: First, don't always start at C. Start anywhere. Otherwise, you'll get mostly good at the first half of the circle - let's be real here. Second, switch it up to the higher octaves from time to time. I know some people will tell you that you only earn money from fret 0-6, that may be right, but you probably won't earn significant money anyhow. Playing high up there is a different beast and also deserves some attention.
Where did you go?
Number 3 is definitely an exercise but it's also just how you develop your own voice/ style on the instrument. Don't just do it with guitar parts. Learn keyboard parts, synth parts, vocal parts, anything and apply it all back to guitar (or whatever your main instrument is)
SICK Firebird
That's a good idea repeating riffs in all keys, Ive been caught with my pants down after a last minute key change, I skipped parts because I didn't remember what fret to start at, if I had known the theory behind it or at the very least where the root note is in the lick/riff/etc. I could have saved it. I know far too little fretboard theory for having been at this for 30 years
hi and i enjoy your videos
Hey Sammy g can you make another guitar colection video for all the gear nerds out there
It's crazy to think that Sammy G has been playing guitar ever since I'm alive... gee
does the sound you use for your metronome impact things? a lot of music has snare on the 2 + 4, so would using a snare like that help you lock in with the drummer easier? or just using like a sparse kick pattern like 1 + the and of 3? I dunno im just thinking of other unexpected things you could do with a metronome or some sort of timing track. top ten weird metronome tricks might be a fun video?
Gotta love that musical soup. I find 9th chords to be the best croutons.
When is the next sale on your guitar courses? I am interested but would like it a little cheaper.
I'm absolutely awestruck by the tone of that Firebird. What year is it from??
Been a long time subscriber (and a purchaser of your courses): Think this is the most useful video you've shared on YT. Love it! Thanks!
as someone without a very limited understanding of theory, could you use the circle of fourths to prectice chords? how would you adapt it to the different keys?
Looking at the Co4s clockwise looks so unsettling
Is this Josh Quinlan?!! 😂 excited for your ufc fight tonite 🤘
I finally have a job that will let me save up money for a house AND let me get your courses. Pretty stoked.
Brooooo. I just found out you’re from The Peg! So that begs the question. Which guitar is “cheapest and best?!” 😂
Great advice, made me a committed subscriber rather than a casual rando. One question; what is that gorgeous guitar? I can see its a Gibson, but I just did a google search and couldn't find another one that looked like it

I can't recommend the 2+4 metronome enough. In almost every style of music, the ability to groove with the back beat is so critical, and relying on an every-beat metronome (or no metronome at all!) never teaches that. It teaches a different way of hearing and locking in with the drums. The other tips are great, too, but for playing in a group... 2+4 for the win!

About 46 times a second on average
Hey Sammie! Something happened with this video. It has only 57 comments, unusually few views and I didn't know you made a new video, and I check subscriptions every day! I checked subscriptions 10 days back and there the video was, but unwatched (I watch at least partially every video of a channel I'm subscribed to, if I don't, I unsub, keeps my subscriptions list short). YT algorithm is broken. I was suggested a 2 year old video of yours and was wondering if you've uploaded recently. If I didn't click on the channel I don't think I would've watched this great video by the way. Yet I keep getting recommended f*cking flat earthers and whatnot
I was literally today searching for "daily exercises". Get out of my head
Each one of these, when you introduced them, I immediately said, “no. no way I’m doing this. I’m a hobby guitarist.” And once you’d given the full description for each, I was like, “yes, this is a great practice idea. I’m doing this.” Because I’m an idiot and I should just shut up and listen. ✌️😌🎸
me (a self taught rhythm guitarist) when all of the exercises involve knowing notes: PANIC!!! PANIC AND SCREAM!!!
