According to the story, Oscar was a successful goat breeder and caretaker, earning him the nickname "Goatman." It is believed that some members of the KKK, were allegedly jealous of his success and targeted him with the intention of causing harm to him and his goats. Oscar attempted to escape and reached the Old Alton bridge, but unfortunately, the KKK caught up to him, assaulted him, and ultimately hung him from the bridge. The Klansmen went down towards the river edge to see their handiwork but found that the noose was empty. Panicked, they searched for him around the area then decided to go back to Oscar’s residence and trapped his family inside. They set the house on fire with his family inside which people believed was a bait to trick Oscar to return back to the house and try to rescue his family. There is no actual record of a Oscar Washburn existing, it was just a name given to the ghost who haunts the bridge.
