    Bought a 1999 v6 ford mustang for 600 dollars couple of years back. Engine ran great and the previous owner put a dual exhaust and K&N air filter on it. The only problems it had were small scratches and dings on the right side of the car and the main reason it was so cheep was the alternator went out on it. Great reliable car and fun to drive when you can hear the exhaust pipes.

    I saw a $500 dollar car, drive for years, drive half way across country and then back. Just change the oil and wheels and an alternator change. Dude! some of these cars man. If you don't care about anything on it but the mechanics of it and how it runs. You can get a great deal. Just don't complain about the wear on the interior! LOL. That's actually easier to fix then the engine tho. I know someone who rebuilt a porsche 911 from junk and got junk seats with mold and dirt from the junkyard for 200 bucks, the whole set! A few hours with the extractor and checking the inside foam was ok, only the outside leather was a little "weathered in" , boom, brand new seats! unbelievable!! I've seen old 80's corolla brought back to life with lavish interiors, custom made! Just because the car is old isn't the end of it! Just care most about the mechanics, make sure they are sound or you're able to fix it and it will last a long time! Don't drive like you in the indy 500! with a 160HP car! lol.

    Melissa, had a friend with one with the 4.0l I6. It was reliable and cheap to fix, held its value well too. Really well. However, you have to be careful with the "death wobble" due to its suspension setup. It's an issue that you have to be ready to encounter when driving these vehicles. Look up a video on it. Here's a suggestion for a $500.00 car: an old Pontiac Sunbird or Chevy Cavalier. They can run a long time, parts are common and dirt-cheap, and a bit of body or paint damage will get them into the under $1000 range. They don't have the cachet of Hondas or Toyotas and nobody expects to sell them for much.

    2:55 my experience with rock auto: I ordered a timing belt kit from them and one of the bolts for the pulleys did not fit. I went to their website to see if I could seek help, and there was nothing I could do online except arrange a return. So I started doing that and I had to answer a bunch of questions like “has this product been opened?” “Has this product been installed?” I finally got done with it and it said I could not return the product since it had been installed on my car. Well wtf how else was I supposed to find out if it fit or not! It wasn’t damaged at all. I went back to their website logged out and logged back in and tried to contact someone, there is absolutely no customer support on their website, or anywhere on the internet. So I said screw this company and I tried to return it again, it wouldn’t even let me go to the return screen because it said the part is already used and not returnable. If you value customer support and honesty over saving a buck or two go to a different website or auto parts store.

    You will have major oil consumption down the road. The 98 - 02 Corolla engines are known for troublesome oil consumption due to worn piston ring springs and they also leak around the crankcase seal. I had a 2000 Corolla, owned it for 12 years. Everything was bullet proof on the car but it does have oil problems. Also, that Corolla you bought is very poorly weight balanced and it performs terribly in the snow. Buy the most expensive, best winter tires you can afford. Blizzaks or Michelins or Continentals etc.

    pay very close attention to the clunking noise frequency. ask yourself is it proportional to the front wheel speed or the rear wheel speer (go the same speed on the rear wheels but turn the wheel more and see if the frequency is the same or higher). if it goes up then its front wheel bearings. if it stays the same its rear wheel cv axles

I recently took my car to the dealership to get an oils change and full point inspection and I noticed they charged me extra for rotating a staggered setup. I was under the impression you can’t rotate staggered wheels. Or am I wrong?

  • @EMichaelBall

    @EMichaelBall

    5 жыл бұрын

    You can side-to-side rotate staggered wheels if the tires have a symmetrical tread pattern. EDIT: Tire rotations ensure even wear of tires over time, but only when moving tires from one axle to the other, not something possible for staggered setups.

  • @mattr2238

    @mattr2238

    Scotty, I have an abused 1994 GMC tbi 350 that I bought running for cheap from a friend because it needed a radiator. I've fixed all the issues (mostly) and use it to go to the landfill or as a loaner and I can't complain. However, it does a weird thing where is runs rough while under low/no load but runs great going through town or on the highway. I think it's running rich because it smokes on startup and smells like gas. I've replaced sensors, rebuilt the injectors, rebuilt the fuel pressure regulator, replaced filters (fuel and air) and just can't seem to make it run perfect. It runsgood enough and it's only a spare but I hate being beaten. Also, if it's a throttle body, a throttle body cost more than I paid for the truck, that's all im saying.

    My first car was $25.00, of course, that was 60 years ago. I bought a '49 Ford when I was in Japan in 1961. I believe I paid $75.00 for it. It had four bald tires and three more bald tires on the rims in the trunk. I got a flat one time and the rubber was so worn off I could poke the tube. My buddy was driving it and he was leaning against the door when it flew open and he fell out, the car hit a tree and stopped. Not to much damage, the bumpers in those days were real bumpers. I used it for about a year and when I shipped out to Hawaii I sold it for $75.00.

    I managed to find an Expedition for 500. Needs work and had to be towed to me. For what I've already put in and will have to continue to put in, I think it's still a good deal. Assuming I do everything (or almost everything) myself, it would still be hundreds if not a thousand or more cheaper than what I could have paid if I bought one that was running. Though I don't know much about cars. Still learning when I can.
