If You Like GOOSEBUMPS, Read These! // Spooky Book Recommendations

Ойын-сауық

Today on Library Macabre, I am recommending seven different Goosebumps throwback book series to read if you are a fan of Goosebumps. All of these books (I feel) capture the essence of the original Goosebumps book series by R.L. Stine very well, and I just had to talk about them. The books featured in this video are Fright Vision by Culliver Crantz, Fright Watch by Lorien Lawrence, Frightville by Mike Ford, MonsterStreet by J.H. Reynolds, Don't Call at All by Robbie Myles, Spine Shivers by J.A. Darke, and Twisted Books to Leave You Shook by C.S. James.
Evil clowns, creepy dolls, killer smart phones, and Halloween feelz... these books have it all, not to mention all the spooky '90s nostalgia of Goosebumps. I hope this helps you find some great books to read! Also, don't forget to check out my Goosebumps collection video, where I do a bookshelf tour showing every Goosebumps book I own!

I'm currently reading the Fear Street books and some Christopher Pike novels and I plan to start reading some Goosebumps books soon. I plan on writing some teenaged horror/supernatural books which I plan on releasing to KDP soon. In fact. I've already plotted out the first book. But these kind of videos have inspired me to go back to my roots with some 90s favorites.

I think what made the old Goosebumps books so much better than anything coming today is because most of us read them when we were kids so we fit the age range and could relate to the characters. Reading them as an adult isn't the same, but still enjoyable. I'm loving these throwback videos. I also can't help but notice your Buffy the Vampire Slayer books in the background! I grew up with the show and the books and recently started collecting the books too.

No joke, my first elementary school had a weird rule where you had to be in the 3rd grade before the librarians let you read Goosebumps (weirdly enough, a parent would read a ' you choose the scare' Goosebumps every Friday.) When I changed schools, the school library didn't have Goosebumps but they had 5 Minute Chillers and 5 Minute Frights. Those two unnerved me like crazy and I definitely recommend them. One story in particular that scared me was a story about Scarecrows that gouged the eyes out of a kid and stuffed him full of straw for his dad to find in a cornfield.

@@LibraryMacabre I haven't read them in almost 20 years and I still get the shivers thinking about them. I found a big, coffee table style book called Paperback Dreams on Book Outlet recently and it goes through the history of the adolescent paperback book craze and the specific genres that were popular from the 80's onward. There's huge sections on Babysitter's Club, SVH & Twins, and yes, horror (Christopher Pike, Stine, etc)! It's amazing!

The Halloweeners is such an awesome title that it surprises me no one used that title before Mr. Reynolds. Great premise too. A slight twist on some old standards as you said. Recently picked up some in the Spine Shivers series. Grin in the Dark sounds terrific! BTW, for old school GB inspired series back in the day, what do you think of Graveyard School, Bone Chillers, Deadtime Stories and Shivers? There’s also the lesser known Shadow Zone by J.R. Black that my childhood best friend and I always kind of enjoyed.

It reminds me of the TV show series called Friday the 13th, which was supposed to called The 13th Hour. The Proprietors of the store had sold all the objects, and each episode was about them trying to retrieve all the cursed objects that were hurting people. Are you familiar with this TV show Cameron? Have you ever read the Bunnicula series? They were a favorite as a kid. It's about a family cat that tries to convince the dog that the new bunny the family just bought is a vampire. They are great!

Wild shot, but around the time of goosebumps there was another similar series…might have been Australian (?). It was much darker, I recall a book where a family goes on a holiday to a beach side resort where a giant black widow in a cave wraps them up in webs and eats the step mother or fathers head off? Honestly my brain says the mum was the black widow…anyone? It’s been driving me crazy for years! It was one of those books floating around the classroom for reading time.

Correction: Mike Ford only write some of the Spinetinglers, that series has a whole bunch of ghostwriters with MT Coffin being the fake name ala Carolyn Keene and whatnot. JA Drake of Spine Shivers is the same actually, does not exist and they are done by credited ghostwriters. Anyway, I read one of the Fright Visions and really liked it, so I'll look into these others. I've got access to some Monster Streets so I'll read them later this year, I'm looking forward to them. Especially with Stine have the critic quote on them, and the cover artists worked on some of the IDW Goosebumps comics, so that bodes well for me.

I knew J.A. Darke wasn’t real (I believe they’re a collaboration of two authors), but I read that Mike Ford was at the helm of Spinetinglers so I assumed he at least wrote most of them. My bad! I hope you enjoy the MonsterStreet series!

Was just on Amazon reading samples and see that The Grin in the Dark takes place here in the Twin Cities. Looks like at least one of the authors lives here. Not sure why, but I always get a weird little thrill whenever I randomly find a book that's set nearby ...

There are some other Goosebumps-like book series: Other than Goosebumps, R. L. Stine also wrote Fear Street Ghost of Fear Street The Nightmare Room There’s also American Chillers Michigan Chillers By Johnathan Rand Shadow Zone Written by J. R. Black Betsy Hanes with her Bone Chillers series AG Cascone and Deadtime Stories M.D. Spenser and his Shivers books Jim Razzi: Spine Chillers J. A. Darke and his Spine Shivers. And James Lee who wrote the Mr. Midnight books. Honestly, I hope to write a Goosebumps-like series of my own.
