I think folks generally should systematically fund 10% to emergency cash each paycheck, then go after escalating debt pay off. A funeral home (heaven forbid that happens to your family) sometimes will require cash ($10-15k) on the spot and it may take a few weeks to get your life insurance payout. Getting $10-15k put away is also money you may need for first and last rent if your housing abruptly changes. As unfavorable as debt is, I think most people today should never let cash get below $15k so getting there and then staying is quite sensible in my opinion even if you have to pay more interest or assume medical bills for the time being. If you get some minimum emergency reserves built you can elect to pause and tackle debt, sure, just figure out what your min emergency should be. I think $10-$15k is a good start for most Americans. If it takes more than a year to do that, be kind to yourself and focus on staying the course. 10% or something like it. It’s worth the effort. If you do 10% you can scale into a better situation and practice being disciplined with setting aside funds that you don’t use unnecessarily. The sooner you master that skill, the better off you are at disciplining yourself in all the other categories. The 10% allows you to still go after eliminating debt it just allows you to build buffer simultaneously which I think is wise. It’s also motivating to not add to card debt knowing how hard you are working to build the 10%.
